Karl Lagerfeld: We create a product nobody needs but people want

German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is rather on the outspoken side (he famously said he "didn't like" Pippa Middleton's face and on Russia proclaimed: "If I was a woman in Russia I would be a lesbian, as the men are very ugly") but more often than not his words ring true.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme business presenter Lesley Curwen, Mr Lagerfeld reminded us just why we lust after the most frivolous of things.

"You spend more for what you really want; some boring things you need: an ugly old car can wait, but if you have a new fashion item it cannot wait. We live on this whole idea" he said.

The 79-year-old, who also design for Fendi and his own label Karl, told Curwen that luxury sales in Europe were going very well, because: "we create a product nobody needs but people want."

If you were seeking any justification for a guilt-inducing Boxing Day splurge, we think Mr Lagerfeld has just provided it.
