
Burberry has today announced that John Smith, who was chief executive of BBC Worldwide for seven years, has been appointed chief operating officer of the brand.
Smith has worked at the heritage label since 2012 in the position of non-executive director. Despite his lack of executive experience at Burberry, he has been appointed to the newly-created COO role thanks to his knowledge of global brand management and digital and mobile media.

"His exceptional global brand and media expertise, together with his record in finance and operations, will be invaluable," Angela Ahrendts, chief executive, olf the Financial Times .
The appointment suggests that Burberry is aiming to entrench itself further into the realm of digital media, something which they have become a pioneer of.
The news comes as the brand announced the forthcoming departure of chief financial officer Stephanie Cartwright who has left to pursue other interests. She will be replaced by Carol Fairweather, currently senior vice-president of group finance.
