Given his popularity among Hollywood stars, it was fitting that Tadashi Shoji was inspired by the film Anna Karenina for his romantic collection this season. Other influences included Czarist Russia and the fall of the Romanov Dynasty, which translated into vintage-inspired gowns, many of which featured cinched waists, lace (including of the high-neck variety) and fitted silhouettes. The most interesting looks, however, were the floor-length velvet ones. Velvet isn't traditionally considered the most flattering fabric to wear head-to-toe, but the monochrome pieces the designer presented may well usher in a red carpet trend.
While the parade of mostly dresses included the requisite strapless and single strap cuts, there were a surprising number of long sleeve, cap sleeve and short sleeve dresses which tie back into the designer's reputation for dressing women of all ages and sizes. It wasn't all delicate romance, however, Shoji revved things up with drop-waist, flapper-esque party dresses, some of which were finished with sequin and feathers.
