Carey Mulligan On Those Great Gatsby Costumes: I Tried To Steal The Tiffany Jewels!

The glamour, the roaring ‘20s, the A-list cast… The most anticipated film of 2013, The Great Gatsby, hits cinemas this week. Grazia Daily met up with Carey Mulligan, 27, who plays Daisy Buchanan to discuss Prada costumes, trying to steal the Tiffany & Co jewellery and working with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Grazia Daily: The film is based in the 1920s. Did you become a pro at The Charleston?

Carey Mulligan: I am a terrible dancer. I would never do it in public. But I actually got quite good at it, but I don’t think much of it made into the film.

Grazia Daily: What was it like wearing all of the beautiful 1920s dresses?

Carey Mulligan: It’s beautiful but I had never really worn anything like that before because it doesn’t really suit me. So we did our version of it in the film. The production collaborated with Prada, and then a lot of it was just [costume designer] Catherine Martin designing and making the dresses, and really understanding the dresses.

Grazia Daily: Did you have much input yourself?

Carey Mulligan: I didn’t design any clothes, of course, but Catherine doesn’t just draw sketches and put you in the dresses that she makes. You had a fitting a week and you try on countless things and they design things, but she allows you to be involved and say what you do or don’t want to wear. That was really great, and very unusual.

Grazia Daily: Were you tempted to steal any of the Tiffany & Co jewellery from set?

Carey Mulligan: Try as I might, there was a security man who was always in the corner of every room I was in, just watching me.

Carey Mulligan On Those Great Gatsby Costumes: ‘I Tried To Steal The Tiffany Jewels!’

Grazia Daily: Did you get to keep any of the clothes or jewellery?

Carey Mulligan: No. Everything is archived and I am sure it will be put into some beautiful exhibition at some point.

Grazia Daily: What was it like working with Leonardo DiCaprio?

Carey Mulligan: Oh, just standard! It’s just every day! It was amazing. He’s an incredibly nice person, and good fun. He was there in both of my auditions. And from the first time I acted with him in the audition he was unbelievably generous. And so when your number one actor on set is behaving like that and being lovely to the crew, and being great with the director Baz Luhrmann, it sets a really good precedent for how everyone is.

In this week’s Grazia we also speak to Leonardo DiCaprio, so pick up a copy of the magazine to read more.

‘The Great Gatsby’ is in cinemas from 16 May
