Mariah Carey & Family are Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Getting the whole family in on the Halloween spirit, Mariah Carey and her brood dressed as Goldilocks and the Three Bears on Wednesday (October 31).

Hubby Nick Cannon even got in on the fun as he donned a papa bear costume while Mariah was (of course) dressed as Goldilocks.

The couple's one-year-old twins Morrocan and Monroe were adorable in their own brown bear costumes.

Sharing the fun with her over 8 million Twitter followers, the 42-year-old diva tweeted, "Happy Halloween everybody!" with a link to the photos.

Enjoy the pictures of Mariah Carey and her family in their Halloween costumes (October 31).

Will Angelina Jolie Wear A Wedding Dress By L'Wren Scott?

If you've picked up the new issue of Grazia (out now), you'll already have seen the latest whisperings surrounding the much-anticipated Brangelina nupitals. It’s been six months since the most famous couple on planet earth – that's Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - announced their engagement. But, despite our incessant hankering for information, there’s been very little info to go on, let alone the small matter of THE DRESS. Until now that is...

Last week, Grazia learned there’s a serious contender for the role of wedding dress designer – L’Wren Scott. There are rumours that Angelina has had ‘several meetings’ with the model turned designer and girlfriend of Rolling Stone Mick Jagger.  ‘Angelina wanted to go with someone who is not so obvious for designing wedding gowns,’ said a friend, ‘She’s been courted by some of the hottest designers on the planet, but having a big name isn’t important to Angelina. She wanted someone she could trust and she most definitely trusts L’Wren.’

Apparently, L’Wren and Angelina originally bonded over their similar body shapes. ‘L’Wren is famed for designing clothes to suit taller, thin women like herself,’ said a source. ‘Of all the people she’s met with she feels L’Wren is the one that understands her body the most.’

Will Angelina Jolie Wear A Wedding Dress By L'Wren Scott? Will Angelina Jolie Wear A Wedding Dress By L'Wren Scott? Will Angelina Jolie Wear A Wedding Dress By L'Wren Scott?

L'Wren Scott's bridal-esque designs

In 2008, the actress wore one of L’Wren’s designs to the premiere of Brad’s film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in LA. She also wore a strappy red number to the 2011 Moneyball premiere in Tokyo. It can’t help but be handy that the pair are neighbours too. Brad and Angelina moved into a house next door to Mick and L’Wren’s in Richmond in April – which would make popping over for dress fittings pretty easy, wouldn’t you say?

Despite rumblings that the wedding could happen sometime soon, at the time of going to press Brad, 48, and Angelina were yet to set a date. Angelina is currently wrapping up filming her new film Maleficent, whilst Brad is spending his time looking after their six children (and filming obscure adverts for Chanel).

When Grazia contacted L’Wren’s publicist, they refused to comment on whether she would be designing Angelina’s wedding gown.

Learning How to Keep Pounds Off Before Dieting May Work Best

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 31 (HealthDay News) -- Women who first learn how to maintain their weight regain fewer of the pounds they shed in a weight-loss program, a new study suggests.

The study included 267 overweight/obese women who were assigned to two groups. One group spent eight weeks learning how to maintain their weight and then began a 20-week weight-loss program that emphasized greater consumption of vegetables and fruits, increased physical activity and the use of proven dieting strategies, such as keeping daily food records.

Women in the control group did the opposite, first doing the weight-loss program, and then learning how to maintain their weight.

Initially, both groups of women lost a similar amount of weight, an average of about 17 pounds (9 percent) of their starting weight. The women were then on their own for one year. At the end of that time, the researchers checked the women's weights.

The women in the maintenance-first group regained an average of three pounds and those in the control group regained seven pounds, according to the Stanford University School of Medicine researchers.

They also found that 33 percent of the women in the maintenance-first group and 18 percent of those in the control displayed a "favorable pattern" -- that is, losing at least 5 percent of their body weight without regaining more than five pounds during the follow-up year.

The findings, published online Oct. 31 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, suggest that learning about weight maintenance first may help reduce the chances of yo-yo dieting, the researchers said.

"Those eight weeks were like a practice run. Women could try out different stability skills and work out the kinks without the pressure of worrying about how much weight they had lost," study author Michaela Kiernan, a senior research scientist at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, said in a university news release.

"We found that waiting those eight weeks didn't make the women any less successful at losing weight. But even better, women who practiced stability first were more successful in maintaining that loss after a year," she noted.

Aubrey Plaza Models Self-Love in Gaps New Holiday Campaign

Gap's 2012 holiday ad campaign celebrates the "many shades" of love. Couples shot for the ad include Michael J. Fox and wife Tracy Pollan and Rufus Wainwright and husband Jorn Weisbrodt. Meanwhile, Boardwalk Empire's Michael Huston posed with his dog ("puppy love") and the cast of Ryan Murphy's The New Normal got together to showcase "modern love." (Because the cast of Modern Love must have said no?) Then there's Aubrey Plaza, shot all on her lonesome, showcasing "self love." She's probably hugging herself.

Halloween Isn't Canceled Until I Say It's Canceled [VIDEO]

It's pretty canceled.

Not only has Heidi Klum called off her legendary costume party (postponed to a haunted Christmas), but also the NYC Halloween Parade isn't happening for the first time in its thirty-nine-year history. Candy sales are projected to fall seriously short of previous expectations and you know fun is truly dead when you start to worry about the candy industry's bottom line.

No Heidi + no parade + well-stocked candy aisles = wait, that sounds fantastic.

To be fair, I already had my Halloween fun this weekend (I realized my longstanding dream of being a pineapple), so it's not like I was ever gonna feel deprived.

Still: I recently struck up an acquaintanceship with this woman that comes into my coffeeshop all the time with her one-year-oldish baby strapped to her torso. That kid will probably be spared a pig-in-a-blanket onesie, and it breaks my heart.

So when I embed Coco Rocha and Ellen Von Unworth's Halloween fashion film for Vs. Magazine below, it's because I'm thinking of the children.

I don't know, just watch it if you feel like it.

Kelsey Grammer: My Infant Daughter Enjoyed Herself at the Playboy Mansions Halloween Party

Kelsey Grammer would like you to know there's absolutely nothing wrong with him and wife Kayte taking their 4-month-old daughter Faith to a noisy and silicone-filled party at the Playboy Mansion.  Sure, it offers TMZ the opportunity to write headlines like "Kelsey Grammer's Baby PASSED OUT at Playboy Mansion" (photo evidence included) but what can you do about the tabloids these days? It's not like either could have stayed home with the baby when they'd put so much effort into their respective looks: store-bought vampire costume and sexy witch post-rhinoplasty.

Fungal Meningitis Outbreak Toll Now 28 Dead, 363 Sickened

TUESDAY, Oct. 30 (HealthDay News) -- As compounding pharmacies at the heart of the ongoing meningitis outbreak are inspected and closed, the death toll rose to 28 on Tuesday, with 363 illnesses reported across 19 states.

Three new fatalities -- two from Michigan and one from Tennessee -- have occurred since the last tally issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday.

The latest numbers come days after Massachusetts officials closed a second compounding pharmacy after inspection revealed conditions that might threaten the sterility of its products.

According to The New York Times, Waltham, Mass.-based Infusion Resource voluntarily surrendered its license over the weekend after inspectors found "significant issues with the environment in which medications were being compounded," Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo, director of the Bureau of Health Care Safety and Quality at the Massachusetts Public Health Department, said at a press briefing.

While she did not release details of what the inspection found, Biondolillo did say that patients had been receiving intravenous medications at the pharmacy, violating state law.

The pharmacy shutdown followed news of unsanitary conditions at the Framingham, Mass., facility of New England Compounding Center, the plant at the center of the ongoing meningitis outbreak. On Friday, federal investigators said their tour of the plant found foreign, "greenish-black" material in some vials of the injectable steroid suspected as the cause of the illnesses.

The contaminated product was one of a host of potential violations discovered during a recent inspection of the New England Compounding Center's plant in Framingham, Mass., U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials said during a Friday press briefing.

"The investigators observed approximately 100 vials of the steroid drug, which purports to be a sterile injectable drug, that had a greenish-black foreign material and a white filamentous [containing filaments] material inside," Steven Lynn, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Office of Manufacturing and Product Quality, said during a news conference Friday afternoon.

Vials from the lot Lynn described were shipped by the company to customers this year, he said. The FDA tested 50 of these vials and all were contaminated with fungus, he added.

The FDA also found the company was not able to keep its "clean room" clean, Lynn said. "A clean room is a space designed to maintain a controlled environment with low levels of airborne particles and surface contamination," he explained.

According to the report, the company failed to keep the air conditioner in the clean room running at night, which is standard practice to maintain the room's humidity and temperature control. In the past, the company itself had found mold and bacteria in the clean room, Lynn said.

"In addition, the investigators observed a dark, hair-like discoloration in a transition room that connects directly to a room used to formulate and fill the injectable products," Lynn said.

Massachusetts officials said last Tuesday that they had begun a criminal investigation into New England Compounding Center. They added that the company functioned as a drug manufacturer, producing drugs for broad use, rather than filling individual prescriptions for individual doctors, in violation of its state license, CBS News reported.

According to published reports, state records show that the New England Compounding Center was plagued by problems as far back as 2006. Those records, obtained by the Associated Press under a public documents request, showed there was evidence of inadequate contamination control and no written standard operating procedures for using equipment, among other problems, at the facility.

New England Compounding Center and Infusion Resource are both compounding pharmacies. These pharmacies combine, mix or alter ingredients to create drugs to meet the specific needs of individual patients, according to the FDA. Such customized drugs are frequently required to fill special needs, such as a smaller dose, or the removal of an ingredient that might trigger an allergy in a patient.

Compounding pharmacies aren't subject to the same FDA oversight as regular drug manufacturers are, but some members of Congress now say the meningitis outbreak highlights the need for more regulatory control.

Meningitis is a potentially fatal inflammation of the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Federal health officials said last week that fungus found in steroid injections produced by the company matched the fungus linked to the meningitis outbreak. The officials said they'd confirmed the presence of the fungus, Exserohilum rostratum, in unopened vials of a steroid produced by the New England Compounding Center.

The steroid, methylprednisolone acetate, is injected into patients for back and joint pain. The company has since shut down operations and stopped distributing its products, health officials said.

The CDC and state health departments estimate that roughly 14,000 patients may have gotten steroid injections from the three lots, and nearly 97 percent of them have been contacted for medical follow-up.

All of the fungal meningitis patients identified so far were thought to be injected with methylprednisolone acetate from the Massachusetts pharmacy, according to the CDC.

Seven of the 363 cases involve what the CDC calls "peripheral joint infection," meaning an infection in a knee, hip, shoulder or elbow. These joint infections aren't considered as dangerous as injections near the spine for back pain that have been linked to the potentially fatal meningitis infections.

The FDA said it was advising all health care professionals to follow up with any patients who were given any injectable drug from or produced by the New England Compounding Center. These drugs include medications used in eye surgery, and a heart solution purchased from or produced by the company after May 21.

The CDC on Tuesday had the following state-by-state breakdown of cases: Florida: 23 cases, including 3 deaths; Georgia, 1 case; Idaho, 1 case; Illinois, 1 case; Indiana: 45 cases, including 3 deaths; Maryland: 20 cases, including 1 death; Michigan: 93 cases, including 7 deaths; Minnesota: 10 cases; New Hampshire: 11 cases; New Jersey: 18 cases; New York: 1 case; North Carolina: 3 cases, including 1 death; Ohio: 14 cases; Pennsylvania: 1 case; Rhode Island: 1 case; South Carolina: 1 case; Tennessee: 74 cases, including 11 deaths; Texas: 1 case; Virginia: 44 cases, including 2 deaths.

Health officials said they expect to see more cases of the rare type of meningitis, which is not contagious, because symptoms can take a month or more to appear.

Infected patients have developed a range of symptoms approximately one to four weeks following their injection. People who have had a steroid injection since July, and have any of the following symptoms, should talk to their doctor as soon as possible: worsening headache, fever, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, new weakness or numbness in any part of your body or slurred speech, the CDC said.

Infected patients must be treated with intravenous drugs in a hospital.

Fast-Food Breakfast Sandwiches May Slow Down Blood Flow: Study

TUESDAY, Oct. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Think about this the next time you chow down on one of those meat-egg-and-cheese breakfast sandwiches: A new study suggests that your fast-food breakfast sandwich has an immediate negative effect on your blood vessels.

The research is preliminary and doesn't compare the effect of eating a couple of fast-food breakfast sandwiches to a healthier choice such as yogurt and a banana. Still, the study hints at the dangers of unhealthy food, said co-author Dr. Todd Anderson, director of the University of Calgary's Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta.

"Even one episode of eating something unhealthy can have an effect," he said, "and cumulatively, that can have an effect. Think before you eat."

The purpose of the study was to examine what happens in the blood vessels after someone eats a high-fat, high-salt meal.

The researchers recruited 20 healthy people, with an average age of 23, to undergo tests that measure how efficiently blood travels through the vessels in their forearms. Some students fasted while others ate two fast-food breakfast sandwiches, and then the groups switched.

Anderson declined to identify the brand of breakfast sandwich because, he said, its identity shouldn't be a focus of the attention given to the research. However, he did say it's a ham, cheese and egg sandwich -- with 25 grams of fat and 450 calories -- that "you could buy anyplace in America or Canada."

Compared to the participants who hadn't eaten recently, the blood vessels of those who ate two breakfast sandwiches worked less efficiently two hours after the meal, Anderson said. "There was a decrease in the ability of the small vessels of the forearm to dilate and generate blood flow," he explained.

This dilation -- widening of the vessels -- helps the blood get more oxygen to the body when you exercise. Other research has suggested that disruptions in this process over time make people more susceptible to develop strokes and heart attacks, Anderson said.

The study didn't examine what would happen if someone ate a healthy meal. Anderson said previous research suggests healthy food wouldn't have had a negative effect.

It's also not clear what would happen if people ate this kind of food continuously, nor what different kinds of fast food (say, a hamburger and fries) would do to the blood vessels.

So what does the research mean? It suggests how trouble in the vessels begins due to an unhealthy diet, Anderson said. "High levels of fat, salt or cholesterol can cause blood vessels to be abnormal, which can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke," he said.

The study was scheduled to be released Tuesday at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress meeting in Toronto.

HealthDay reached out to the National Restaurant Association but a comment was not made available at press time.

Chris Fahs, a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma's department of health and exercise science who studies blood vessels, cautioned against taking general messages from the study.

"It's hard to say how one specific food impacts a person's risk for health problems. With nutrition there are so many variables that can be changed," Fahs said. "Too much of any one food will probably have negative consequences in the long term, but eating that food in combination with other foods which meet a person's nutritional needs may not have same impact on the vascular system."

In addition, Fahs said, "the field of nutrition is very conflicting when it comes to dietary recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular disease."

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Junk Food Hurts Your Arteries, But Healthy Meal Might Help

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 31 (HealthDay News) -- Every junk-food meal you eat damages your arteries, while Mediterranean-type meals do no harm -- and may even have a beneficial effect, according to a new study.

Junk-food meals are composed mainly of harmful saturated fat, while Mediterranean-style meals are rich in good fats such as mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to the researchers from the Montreal Heart Institute, which is affiliated with the University of Montreal.

The study included 28 nonsmoking men who ate a Mediterranean-style meal first and then a junk-food meal a week later. The Mediterranean meal included salmon, almonds and vegetables cooked in olive oil. The junk-food meal included a sandwich made with sausage, egg and cheese, along with three hash browns.

The researchers assessed how the meals affected the inner lining (endothelium) of the blood vessels. Endothelial function, which determines how well blood vessels dilate (or open), is closely linked to the long-term risk of developing heart disease.

After eating the junk-food meal, the participants' arteries dilated 24 percent less than they did when they hadn't eaten. After the Mediterranean meal, the participants' arteries dilated normally and maintained good blood flow, the investigators found.

The researchers also measured the participants' triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood that can cause narrowing of the arteries. The study authors found that people with higher blood triglyceride levels seemed to benefit more from the Mediterranean meal. Their arteries responded better to the meal than the arteries of people with low triglyceride levels.

"We believe that a Mediterranean-type diet may be particularly beneficial for individuals with high triglyceride levels ... precisely because it could help keep arteries healthy," study leader Dr. Anil Nigam, director of research at the Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Center at Montreal Heart Institute, said in a university news release.

The study was scheduled for presentation Tuesday at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Toronto. The data and conclusions of research presented at medical meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Designer Dossier: Oscar de la Renta

For just one minute, forget that Oscar de la Renta has an empire that rivals a small country, was one of Jacqueline Kennedy's personal courtiers, and continues to inspire the fashion world with each collection he brings to the table.

Instead, lets discuss Oscar's not so humble beginnings and extensive professional pedigree. Born and raised in Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic, De la Renta counted diplomats, poets, and scholars as members of his family, an upbringing that helped develop his strong business acumen.

However, Oscar's educational background wasn't purely academic. Vogue.com explains that De la Renta "has often cited the tropical vegetation and the vibrant colour palettes of the island as inspiration for his striking designs." At the tender age of 18, Oscar left his native town to pursue art at The Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. Soon after, the young artist discovered his passion for fashion and sketching, which would eventually land him the covetable and life-changing apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga, Spain's most revered couturier at the time.

But that was only the beginning of De la Renta's impressive resume. De la Renta also worked at Lanvin as couture assistant and later as a designer at Elizabeth Arden (a spot that mentor and editor-in-chief of VogueDiana Vreeland helped him secure), where he created haute-couture gowns for the label's custom-made clothing.

And just like everything else Vreeland touches, Oscar's stint at Elizabeth Arden would be life changing. As a result of the valuable contacts and knowledge Oscar accrued during at the brand, the Oscar de la Renta label was launched. What started out as a ready-to-wear line for women is now a global empire that counts a home line, a perfume line, an accessory line, and of course his bridal collection, which elevated the brand's success and name to a global level. Launched in 2006, Oscar de la Renta's Bridal collection changed the course of bridalwear in the fashion domain as well as in rest of the world. Discussing his bridal collection with Vogue.com, De la Renta said, "My designs are known for their beautiful ornamentation, details, fabrics, and embroideries - which are never more important than on a wedding dress."

So just how does an iconic brand like Oscar de la Renta stay relevant in a culture where fashion trends die as quickly as they breed? For starters, the brand has reached out to younger generations by restyling their image both figuratively and digitally, upgrading their classic designs with a modern flair, and entering the social media sphere. Today Oscar de la Renta is one of the largest brands across social platforms like Facebook, Tumblr, and TwitterErika Bearman, Oscar de la Renta’s social media personality and senior vice president of marketing and communications, has attracted nearly 160,000 followers on Twitter under her OscarPRGirl moniker. In addition to reaching a younger demographic, the brand's social activities have helped boost sales.

For his Spring 2013 collection, Mr. De la Renta continued to show his ability to evolve as a designer while maintaining the integrity of his line. With edgier garments, De la Renta has combined a youthful attitude with the label's established elegance, creating a collection that challenged and diversified that way we view high end designs, classic silhouettes, and, of course, eveningwear.
