Put a Bow on It Like Natalie Portman, Kerry Washington and More

A dainty bow may be the epitome of girlishness, but that doesn’t mean that wearing one has to make you look like Hello Kitty. Bow details are adding sweet touches everywhere from the Christopher Kane and Lanvin Spring 2013 runways to the feet of celebrities. Whether incorporating a stylish ribbon to cinch the waist or as a feminine accent on an accessory, bows are sure to make you look pretty as a present.

Celebs have gotten all wrapped up in the bow trend, displaying on the red carpet how a well-placed bow can be the icing on the cake of a perfectly feminine look. At the Oscars, the bejeweled bodice of Kerry Washington’s sherbet-colored Miu Miu gown had a lot of pizzazz on its own, but the delicate bow at the waist brought the whole thing together. Petra Nemcova’s Ralph and Russo dress at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Oscars viewing party made the belt-bow into a show-stopping statement. The petrol blue and white Christian Dior gown that Marion Cotillard wore to the SAG Awards was given another layer of fanciness with its long-tailed bow at the waist, evoking the elegance of a Japanese obi sash. Washington used a bow headband to add a touch of whimsy to her checkered Louis Vuitton dress at the Django Unchained Berlin photocall.

Alesha Dixon channeled some schoolgirl charm at the Glasgow auditions of Britain’s Got Talent, wearing a black silk bow tie with her green minidress and tartan blazer. Jaime King’s look at the Rembrandt Hollywood Party-Prep event was on-point—the metallic Louboutins with black bow details gave some perk to her basic powder blue bustier top and tweed pencil skirt. At the Les Victoires de la Musique awards, Lou Doillon showed off how a bow can lend some softness to a masculine look in a Saint Laurent suit with an oversized bow-tie-inspired tie at the neck. Pixie Lott tamed racier details like the slit on her figure-hugging minidress and her platform sandals with a sweet bow tucked into her updo for a look that was vintage inspired but of-the-moment enough to promote the Blackberry 10.

Natalie Portman looked lovely at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in her Christian Dior gown—the black silk ribbon imparted an extra sumptuousness to her white empire-waist gown, elevating the otherwise simple look. Go ahead, be a girl and embrace this season’s bow trend. Start with one of these pretty—and not too saccharine—pieces:

1. J. Crew Collection Contessa Snakeskin Bow Pumps - $278;  2. Red Valentino Leather Hair Band with Bow - $108;  3. Iris & Ink Detachable Pussy-Bow Silk-Crepe Blouse - $125;  4. Jennifer Lawrences Funny Cigarette Spawns Even Funnier Headlines

Some photographer got a picture of Jennifer Lawrence smoking something that looked like pot, resulting in a torrent of weed-related headlines cluttering up the Internet all day. Weirdly, they were disappointingly pun-free — no one even went after low-hanging fruit like Winter's Stone, or a Hunger Games munchies joke. Anyway, we've rounded up some of the more awkward, creative ones for your perusal. Enjoy.

Emily VanCamp Covers Fashion's April 2013 Issue

Stepping away from the set of her hit television series "Revenge," Emily VanCamp graced the cover of Fashion's April 2013 issue.

After slipping into a stunning Gucci dress and posing for a few frames with James White, the 26-year-old actress talked with the mag about everything from avoiding cosmetic surgery to her life outside of the spotlight.

During the interview, the Canadian star explained, "I think actors get addicted to youth but it seems so exhausting to me. There is such pressure in L.A. to keep young and beautiful [but] the expectation to maintain this perfectly youthful face is incredibly intimidating as a woman in this business."

"How can you act if your face is frozen? I don't understand it," she added. "I find it really tragic and sad that women feel that they can't age and still work in film. Some of my favorite women I like to watch on screen are the ones that allow themselves to age gracefully. They play women that are around the same age and they have no shame in it."

Meanwhile, she continually backstabs the wealthy folks of the Hamptons on set, but Miss VanCamp declares she and boyfriend/co-star Josh Bowman avoid bringing their work home. "We're playing very intense characters. A lot of us are doing intense scene after intense scene so when you go home you absolutely need to unwind, disconnect, and let it all go. If you live with these characters—it could be quite distracting and destructive."

In regards to what really helps her de-stress, Emily gives credit to her gal pals, adding, "I have an amazing group of friends and they make it easy for me to let loose and relax on the weekends, get back to reality and ground myself."

PETA's Not Okay With Beyonce's Customized Isabel Marant Wedge Sneakers

Probably because she's not okay with walking around wearing the same down-market* Isabel Marant wedge sneakers seen on so many other celebrity feet, Beyonce had her pair customized by PMK (Perfectly Made Kicks).

According to their order form, PMK won't help you out for under $300, but surely the pop star paid a premium: Beyonce had the Marant shoes re-skinned with a really tacky combination of stingray, ostrich, calf fur, crocodile and anaconda. Gross. If Beyonce thinks she has so much to prove that she needs to get her (luxury designer) sneakers customized with a melange of rare animal skins, there's no hope for the rest of us.

The Telegraph reports that PETA has taken the unsual step of releasing a statement to protest the animal-skin shoes:

"These custom-made kicks come with a high price and it's paid by the various animals who were beaten and skinned alive or cruelly farmed and killed. Although most people aren't as familiar with the types of animals (snakes, stingrays, crocodiles, and ostriches) killed for this single pair of sneakers as they are with the cats and dogs we share our homes with, these animals are highly sensitive living beings who try hard to avoid capture and suffer enormously when trapped, netted, speared, and skinned alive."

Ew sneakers made out of cat fur, I can already see the sick wheels turning in Karl Lagerfeld's brain.

*The shoes retail for just under $400, which is some hundreds of dollars more than I can/would spend on sneakers, but actually surprisingly decent for such a hot-ticket item. Like, if you wanted a pair more than anything, you'd only have to go without food for a few weeks.

Michelle Williams: Vote for Her Best Post-Jason Segel Breakup Look

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams may be getting over a breakup, but you'd never know it from looking at her! In the few days since Us Weekly broke the news of the actress' split from How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel, whom she dated for a year, Williams, 32, has been as composed and stylish as ever during European promotions for her new flick, Oz the Great and Powerful.

Posing with co-stars Mila Kunis and James Franco at a Feb. 27 photo call and press conference in Russia for the epic fantasy, in theaters March 8, the Dawson's Creek alum was all smiles in a black sleeveless Victoria Beckham minidress that showed off her slim, sexy legs. She paired the tres chic frock with black Charlotte Olympia heels embellished with tiny stars.

Later that same night, Williams traded the sweet sheath for a dress with a little more drama. Walking the green carpet at the Okyabe Cinema Hall in Moscow, Russia, the Oscar-nominated actress sparkled in a super-glam gown by designer Jason Wu, with black-and-gold chevron stripes running down the length of the frock. Christian Louboutin shoes and a gold Verdura cuff completed the ensemble.

One day later, at the London premiere on Thursday, Feb. 28, the blonde beauty -- and mom to 7-year-old Matilda, her daughter with the late Heath Ledger -- rocked a blue strapless Burberry Prorsum frock with all-over feather detailing. She accessorized the look with black Jimmy Choo sandals, a black clutch, and a green Solange Azagury-Partridge ring.

Giuliana Rancic: Marriage is Most Important

There's a widespread tendency for parents to idolize their kids at the expense of their marriage, but Giuliana Rancic isn't going down that road.

In a new interview, the E! reporter explained that while her baby Edward is a precious blessing in her life, husband Bill comes first.

Giuliana shared, "We're husband and wife, but we're also best friends, and it's funny because a lot of people, when they have kids, they put the baby first, and the marriage second. That works for some people."

"For us, I find, we put our marriage first and our child second, because the best thing we can do for him is have a strong marriage. So we're even stronger than we ever were before and even imagined we could be."

"I always say to Bill, 'You were my first baby,' because he was! He was my first love and my first baby and Duke is my second baby," she added.

Higher Indoor Humidity Levels Might Slow Flu's Spread

THURSDAY, Feb. 28 (HealthDay News) -- As the flu season continues to pack a punch for some Americans, new research suggests there might be a simple way to reduce the risk for infection in an indoor setting: hike up humidity levels.

By raising indoor relative humidity levels to 43 percent or above, investigators reported that they were able to quickly render 86 percent of airborne virus particles powerless.

The finding is reported in the February issue of the journal PLOS One by a team led by John Noti, a senior service fellow with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Health Effects Laboratory Division at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Morgantown, W.V.

To assess the role of humidity in flu transmission, Noti and his colleagues relied on mechanized mannequins and tissue cultures rather than actual humans.

Placed in a tightly sealed and disinfected model of a hospital examination room, a coughing mannequin served as a flu patient and was outfitted with aerosolized viral solution. The viral solution was projected into the air via five mechanized "coughs," spread out over one-minute intervals.

At the same time, a breathing mannequin (serving as a caregiver) was set to face the coughing mannequin at a distance of a little less than 7 feet. The breathing model was programmed to inhale in sync with the coughing, and aerosol samples of inhaled air were collected at various points around the mouth of the caregiver for up to five hours post-coughing.

Throughout testing, humidity levels were adjusted from a low of 7 percent relative humidity to a high of 73 percent.

The result: the team found that when humidity levels were set to 43 percent, only 14 percent of the virus particles that were released were able to transmit the influenza virus, compared with a transmission rate of 70 percent to 77 percent in a relatively low-humidity environment (23 percent).

What's more, the protective impact of higher humidity levels appeared to be rapid, with the majority of viral inactivation taking place within 15 minutes of when viral particles were first "coughed" into a high-humidity environment.

The study authors cautioned that it remains to be seen whether humidity adjustments can undermine infection risk as effectively in a real-world setting.

If confirmed, however, the protective impact of humidity levels of 40 percent and above probably would be of the most practical benefit in hospital settings, where the ability to protect medical staff by strictly regulating humidity levels would be most feasible.

"I totally buy this," said Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. "It's very hard to prove that lower humidity increases the risk of transmissibility, but it's not surprising because the reasoning makes sense, which is that droplets fall to the ground in high humidity because water travels on dry air, not on water. If you combine airborne viral droplets with water droplets, they fall."

Dr. Philip Tierno a clinical professor of microbiology and pathology at NYU Langone, agreed.

"It's a well-understood phenomenon that moisture prevents the movement of germs, as it does, for that matter, bio-terror weapons like sarin gas and other chemicals," he said. "They combine with moisture and become heavy, and even drop."

"This is not surprising from a scientific standpoint," Tierno added. "And 45 percent relative humidity is not a lot. It's at the 70 percent level where you get discomfort. But 45 [percent humidity] does not make you feel uncomfortable.

"The problem," he said, "is that in the wintertime, when the virus is most likely to spread, it's very difficult to maintain 45 percent humidity because you have to compete with all the dry heat that's being pumped in, which means that typically you're talking about rooms that have a relative humidity of 20 percent, if you're lucky."

"That's why it would be difficult to use this approach in a residential space, unless you seclude the patient to one room and use room humidifiers that are large enough to handle the space in question and keep the doors closed," Tierno added.

V Magazine's Spring 2013 issue profiles Liberty Ross and best friend Amanda Harlech, because every friendship is a love story and this one began while the two women were working at Chanel under Karl Lagerfeld. The ultimate meet-cute chic-cute.

However, many years later, they're still cute-ing (sry).

"I feel as though I have known Amanda forever," says Ross in the profile, "but perhaps that is just because I have always felt so at ease around her and oddly connected to her."

Harlech would not be outdone by her friend's demonstrativeness: "Liberty is part of where I came from as much as where I'm going. Subtle, distilled like a perfume, she senses everything a beat before I do. I love the wisdom in the reach of her laugh, her canny all-seeing eye, her compassion and verve and dance. I think the same things move us — we can share without saying a word."

Cher Is Obviously the Coolest Paris Showgoer

When Cher breezed into Gareth Pugh yesterday, her earrings a-dangling and hair a-flowing, we figured her appearance was a one-time thing, and reacted with appropriate breathlessness. But then, to our delight, she resurfaced at both Balmain and Rick Owens today. This woman is so cool that even fashion people — the most jaded demographic on the planet — got starstruck:

How a Whole Foods Juice Box Led the NYPD to a Fashion Publicist Turned Art Thief

Yesterday, a fashion publicist plead guilty to stealing a Salvador Dali painting from an Upper East Side gallery. The Daily Mail reports that he was discovered when the police matched his fingerprints to ones that were on a juice box he'd previously stolen from Whole Foods. By pleading guilty, he's avoiding jail time but will have to pay $9,100 in restitution until he is formally sentenced in March. At that point he'll probably be deported to Greece.

Last year, Phivos Istavrioglou was just an unknown Greek man who security cameras filmed removing a pricy work of art from a gallery wall and stuffing it in a plastic shopping bag. (Which, from what I understand, is a not uncommon way to steal famous paintings. This is all hearsay, but when I was in college, some kid stole a Jasper Johns using the exact same method. He took it home with him on the subway. A few months later, a security guard showed at one of his classes being like, "Hey?")

Our hero fled to Europe, but when he saw that the NYPD was on the hunt (they were sharing screenshots from the security camera which showed him just casually stealing a famous painting to major news outlets all around the world), he removed the Dali from its frame, rolled it up into a poster tube and sent it back to the U.S.

Since he didn't take any measures to prevent fingerprinting all over the tube and painting before returning the object to law enforcement, police quickly discovered that they were dealing with the same idiot who'd stolen juice from Whole Foods the previous year. (Literally, anyone that's ever seen a police procedural or like, Pretty Little Liars even, would have worn gloves and bypassed the whole fingerprint situation.)

The cops "lured him" back into the U.S. by, not even joking, posing as an art consultant at a gallery which neighbored the one he stole from. This guy is being such an unbelievable idiot I have to think this is either 1) a weird, poorly calculated guerrilla marketing scheme for either Moncler, the high-end French outerwear brand he's been a publicist for, or the gallery he theived from (as reported last year by NBC), Venus Over Manhattan, or 2) a performance art piece?

Rita Oras Retail Romp in Sydney

Making the most of her time in the land down under, Rita Ora treated herself to a shopping spree in Sydney, Australia earlier today (February 28).

The sassy singer was joined by her pal/stylist Kyle De'Volle as she hit up a variety of different shops and boutiques, chatting on her iPhone and carrying a bag from the Sunglass Hut.

Rita is in Australia to perform at the Future Music Festival this weekend, and she couldn't be happier about the gig. She tweeted, "SYDNEY!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!!!! #futuremusicfestival. We're off today where can we go Aussie bots! Give me a plan!! We're gona rock your festival this year we got a show for u! Here we go..."

As for her role in the forthcoming sixth installment of the "Fast and the Furious" franchise, Rita denied that she was recruited as a replacement for Rihanna.

"They needed a head girl [for] the girl drivers of London town. They asked me, 'Would you mind being the leader of the pack in London?' I was like, 'Of course, I'd love to.' And I think it summed up a great year for me, life kind of changed last year, so I did feel like a cool little leader when I was playing that role."

Best Dressed At 2013 NME Awards: Florence Welch, Zawe Ashton & More

On his arrival at last night's NME Awards, Ronnie Wood said that he was hoping for a 'scruffy night'. We're not sure he was referring to the style stakes so much as any potential rock 'n' roll antics but we thought it would be wise to take a little gander at what everyone was wearing.

A special mention should of course go to Florence Welch (minus Machine) who wowed in this electric blue Christopher Kane dress from the pre-Fall 2013 collection and accessorised her look with a bling cocktail ring from Sorellina. It was a big night for Flo who scooped up Best Solo Artist (she was surprised and was gracious enough to still thank her bandmates for their 'collaborative' efforts) and Best Dancefloor Anthem for her collaboration with Calvin Harris on Sweet Nothing.

Let's take a look at which other guests rocked the red carpet, shall we?

Coco Rocha Defends Those Banana Republic Mad Men Ads

When Coco Rocha's campaign for the new Banana Republic Mad Men collection dropped yesterday, several customers complained that she's too thin to represent the show's curvaceous female characters, whose hourglass silhouettes supposedly inspired the designs. Today, Rocha defended the images to Entertainment Weekly:

It was fascinating because we also shot in a style that was heavily used in ’60s photos, and I’ve never shot in that kind of framing before. It’s a Twiggy sort of style where the [models' faces are angled] forward, and their bodies look smaller. I think we really got the essence of a ’60s campaign.

Video Games May Sharpen Focusing Skills in Kids With Dyslexia

THURSDAY, Feb. 28 (HealthDay News) -- Here's one possible treatment for dyslexia that kids won't complain about: video games.

Italian researchers report that they found that children with the reading disability scored better on tests after they played an action video game for hours, possibly because their minds temporarily became more focused.

It's not clear if video games directly improved the dyslexia in the kids. If it did, no one knows how long the effect might last or whether the strategy is a better approach than traditional treatments. In other words, dyslexic children shouldn't necessarily play a couple of video games and call their reading specialist in the morning.

Even if video games do help dyslexic kids, "we are not suggesting a 'do-it-yourself' training by any means," said study co-author Andrea Facoetti, an assistant professor with the Developmental & Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at the University of Padua in Italy. However, Facoetti said, video games could become a tool for reading teachers who teach kids with dyslexia, a learning disability that prevents people from properly understanding written words.

In the study, one group of 10 dyslexic kids played a Wii video game called Rayman Raving Rabbids for 12 hours over several days while another group played a video game that didn't focus on action.

The kids who played the action game improved their reading speed by as much or more than a dyslexic child normally would in an intense reading program, Facoetti said.

The video games may train the brain to pay more close attention and focus on things, Facoetti said.

The findings deserve to be taken seriously, said Guinevere Eden, director of the Center for the Study of Learning at Georgetown University and a past president of the International Dyslexia Association.

"It's exciting to see an unconventional approach to try to improve the speed or fluency of reading," she said. It's difficult to improve reading comprehension in dyslexic kids because they read slowly, she explained: "By the time they get to the end of the sentence, they can't tell you what it's about."

The difficult therapy to improve dyslexia is another drawback, she said. "It's hard work, and it's not fun."

If video games help kids with dyslexia read more effectively, shouldn't dyslexia cases have fallen drastically in recent decades during the rise of video games? Study co-author Facoetti said the new research can't answer that question because the children tested hadn't played video games before.

Eden, who's familiar with the findings, said: "I don't have a great answer for you, but there are a couple of things: I don't think we have a good sense of whether dyslexia is going up or down because the whole definition is variable. What's interesting here is how it might be that what we think of dyslexia may be changing, not just because of video games but because of technology in general."

What's next? Eden said researchers should focus on trying to understand why video games may improve the symptoms of dyslexia.

While the study showed an association between playing action video games and improved reading scores among kids with dyslexia, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

The study was released online Feb. 28 in advance of publication in the March 18 print issue of Current Biology.

Paris Fashion Week Diaries with Damien Neva, the Social Media Guy at Wilhelmina Models

PARIS — My flight from JFK landed early Wednesday morning, which meant I would by design have to hit the ground running. The footprint Paris Fashion Week leaves on the calendar is considerable (a full nine days) compared to its counterparts in New York (eight), London (five), and Milan (six). That I am loath to live out of a hotel room in even a purportedly brilliant city like Paris any longer than absolutely necessary means I am not afforded the luxury of an extra day before the shows start. As first days in France's fashion capital go, Wednesday was not an inauspicious beginning and put me backstage at Rochas and H&M.

I began my role as the Director of Social Media at Wilhelmina Models in New York in December 2012, and it's what makes my stay in Paris and coverage of the shows possible. In January, I traveled to Milan in the same manner to cover the menswear collections. The set-up is straightforward: I travel to where my agency's models are at important times during the fashion calendar. I first started traveling to Milan and Paris for men's and women's shows during my tenure as News Editor at Ford Models. I spent the Spring 2013 season "in-house" as the Public Relations Director — Digital Media at Calvin Klein, Inc. The Fall 2013 season, however, is my first at Wilhelmina and has already proven to be gratifying. Working with an impressive group of models that include the likes of Ava Smith, Manon Leloup, Marike Le Roux, Soo Joo (below, right), Matt Hitt, RJ King, Sung Jin Park and Yannick Abrath (to name but a few) has made my job all the more enjoyable — and my Wednesday in Paris was no exception.

The scale of fashion show production in Paris and Milan compared to New York is higher across the board. Sure, New York has outliers like Marc Jacobs, but it also stages a fair few identikit shows at Lincoln Center. In Paris and Milan, where there are an abundance of comparatively grandiose venues built over the centuries, the shows reflect their locations. Take, for example, the two shows I had the fortune of attending on Wednesday, Rochas and H&M. The former took place at the Espace Cambon at 46 rue Cambon, which boasts a lengthy runway that spans the considerable distance of a roughly 7500 square foot room (top image). The base of the runway is a massive staircase that leads down from a mezzanine. At show time, the models gracefully descended that staircase in a collection by Marco Zanini, the brand's creative designer, replete with impossibly tall heels that recalled the streamlined 1950s.

Violence Against Women Act Passed With All Parts Intact

The House of Representatives came to its senses and passed the Senate version of the Violence Against Women Act today. That's the one that includes extended protections for LGBT, immigrant, and Native American victims of domestic violence, which passed easily and with bipartisan support (save a couple dozen Republican men) in the Senate. House Republicans objected to a provision that would give Native American tribal courts the jurisdiction to prosecute non-Natives who commit abuse on reservations, closing a loophole that has allowed Native American women to experience abuse at double national rates.
