Mencyclopaedia: Casio G-Shock

Last month I chucked an expensive watch off a cliff. Before that, I'd banged it on a tree trunk, rubbed it into a track, thrown it for a drooler of a terrier to fetch, knocked it against the jagged wall of a swimming pool, left it with a three-year-old to do his worst with, and even allowed it to roast for a few minutes in the embers of a camp fire.

This was neither carelessness, nor insurance scam, but a test. The watch - catchily named MTG-1500B-1A1EF - was a £500 "premium" model from Casio's 30-year-old G-Shock range. The strap on my own watch had broken just days before a trip to visit family in Australia, so I'd borrowed it from Casio - and was invited to rough it up as much as I wanted along the way.

Knuckleduster heavy and clad in stainless steel and rubber, it kept on beeping on the hour, every hour, whatever the abuse. That beeping was annoying (the lack of instructions made it complicated to operate), but useful when searching for it at the bottom of that cliff.

The Investment Dresser: classic watches

G-Shocks are not beautiful, but they do have a sinister, Batmobile-type of armoured ruggedness that some people appreciate. Their key attribute, though, is durability. Online, there are films of G-Shock owners giving their watches abuse in ways far more creative than mine: they are strapped to baseball bats and smashed on breezeblocks, frozen, jammed in electrical fans and shot. They rarely shatter.

This is thanks to an engineer named Kikuo Ibe, who was working in Casio's research and development department in 1981 when he dropped, and broke, a watch that had belonged to his father. "That was an extremely precious watch," he later said, "and there it was, completely smashed." He decided to attempt to build a near-indestructible alternative, and had already gone through 200 prototypes by the time he noticed a small girl playing with a ball in his local park. "Suddenly," he said, "the solution was obvious. I imagined that bouncing ball containing a floating watch engine, which would remain unaffected when the ball hit the ground, absorbing the impact."

The first G-Shock, the DW-5000 (they all have these romantic names), was launched in 1983. It was a cheap LCD watch floating in a chunky tank case, but though successful, was no sensation. Yet Casio kept plugging away, producing variations on Ibe's initial theme, and in the 1990s they took off, becoming fashion statements in both Japan and the US.

Left to right: GB-6900AA-1B £160, the original DW-5000C-1A, and the GA-303B-1A £160

As colourful as Swatch watches, but as oversized as a weightlifter on steroids, they reached their peak of popularity in 1998 when 19 million G-Shock and Baby G (the smaller version) watches were sold. In total, the company has sold over 70 million. Military personnel seem to be particularly keen - there are some great galleries of soldiers, pilots and frogmen flashing their heftily accessorised wrists - and last year the company produced a limited edition model in collaboration with the RAF.

Casio works hard to keep the G-Shock name popular, hiring snowboarders, surfers and skateboarders as ambassadors, or placing the models in Hollywood action films.

The world's best sports watches: this season's selection

And there are now hundreds of models, from supercharged, beeping, radio-linked, Bluetoothed, solar-powered, self-setting chronographs like the one I used, all the way down to straightforward, low-spec £60-ish versions of Ibe's original model (the DW-5600-1VER looks closest).

New Stroke Guidelines Stress Treatment Within One Hour of Arrival in ER

THURSDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- New guidelines on stroke care stress that getting clot-busting drugs and other treatments within one hour of arriving in the emergency room is crucial to minimizing brain damage and speeding recovery.

"We have incorporated a lot of learning and experience in the past five years in developing stroke systems of care," said guideline author Dr. Edward Jauch, director of the division of emergency medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston.

"It's not just a single person managing a stroke that makes a difference. It's creating a process that involves patients, people around patients, pre-hospital care and hospitals," he said. "When all these pieces are in place, the patient has the best chance for having a good outcome."

The new guidelines, from the American Stroke Association, were published online Jan. 31 and will appear in the March print issue of the journal Stroke.

The most common type of stroke, called an ischemic stroke, is caused by a blood clot in an artery in the brain. Ischemic strokes account for 90 percent of all strokes.

Once doctors determine that a patient is suffering a stroke, treatment usually begins with a brain scan to find the clot. A drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is then injected to break up the clot. To be most effective, tPA needs to be given within four and a half hours of the first appearance of symptoms, the experts said.

To get treatment within this narrow window of time, the new guidelines stress calling 911 and getting to the hospital by ambulance. Not only is an ambulance faster, but it also allows emergency-room doctors to prepare for the patient's arrival.

"If you arrive at a hospital by [ambulance], you get treated very differently than if you arrive in our lobby," Jauch said. Patients see a doctor faster, get a CT scan faster and get treated faster with treatments that are time-dependent, he explained.

"And you are more likely to go to the right hospital," he added, such as one with a stroke center.

Stroke centers offer specialized treatment for all types of stroke. In some cases, a patient will be taken to a comprehensive stroke center, which can provide even greater levels of care.

Advanced care may include using so-called stent retrievers, which are catheters that are threaded through the affected brain artery that expand the vessel, snag the clot and remove it. This is faster than tPA, but works only on the largest clots, Jauch explained.

When a hospital that specializes in stroke isn't nearby, patients can be treated in a community hospital under direction from a stroke expert via telemedicine, Jauch said. After initial treatment, a decision on whether to transfer the patient to a stroke center can be made, he said.

The guidelines also call for continued quality improvement through hospital committees that review and monitor stroke care.

"Time is brain," said Dr. Roger Bonomo, a neurologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

People who need tPA aren't getting it because they get to the hospital too late for it to be used, he said. "Not enough people are calling 911 when they are having symptoms of a stroke," he added.

An easy way to remember the sudden signs of a stroke is the acronym F.A.S.T.:

One Liquid Liner Will Make You Feel Like a Pro

Way back during those swank ancient-Egyptian times, when women like Cleopatra bathed in vats of rose oil whilst being fanned by shirtless men, everyone (ladies and dudes alike) rimmed their eyes with black kohl liner. It wasn't so much a beauty statement as it was a safety measure to protect their eyes from the sun's glaring rays. While the Egyptian guyliner look faded away, women continued to emphasize their eyes with pencil liners until about the sixties when the liquid version was invented. Soon, women everywhere were deftly drawing graphic black lines on their upper lash lines, finishing with a little flick at the end to create the "cat eye" look made famous by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn.

Over the course of a few weeks, I set out to test eleven liners and scrutinized qualities like firmness of point, flow of ink, and the ability to stay smudge-free, to see which one would come out on top. No one wants a splat of inky black above their eyes! Click through the slideshow to see which liquid liner is easiest to use and will last all day.

Smaller Snack Portions Just as Satisfying

THURSDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- Eating a smaller portion of chocolate and other snack foods will satisfy you just as much as a larger portion, according to a new study.

The study included more than 100 adults who were given small and large portions of the same snack. Those who ate large portions consumed 77 percent more calories than those who ate small portions.

Both groups, however, reported significantly lower snack cravings 15 minutes after eating, according to the study, which was published in the January issue of the journal Food, Quality and Preference.

"This research supports the notion that eating for pleasure -- hedonic hunger -- is driven more by the availability of foods instead of the food already eaten," study co-author Brian Wansink, a professor of economics at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., said in a university news release.

"Just a bit satisfies, not magnifies, hunger and craving tendencies for snacks," he added.

The findings could help people trying to shed pounds or prevent weight gain.

"If you want to control your weight, here's the secret: Take a bite and wait. After 15 minutes all you'll remember in your head and in your stomach is that you had a tasty snack," Wansink said.

Joke On About Christine Quinns Cover Look, Its Not Sexist at All

Good news: Mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn has not been scared off fashion forever by jokes about her New York magazine cover. She told the New York Post — one of the image's loudest critics — that she's glad she's a woman, because at least she has some sartorial options.

"I'd rather be a woman in politics than a man in politics. All they get to do is wear the same old boring blue, gray, tan suits over and over again. The thrill of their life is picking a tie. We've got pins and earrings and bracelets ... I feel bad for them. And the one thing they get to pick is choking them all day."

Michelle Obama Could Be Shooting a Vogue Cover Right This Minute

After all that ambassador talk went nowhere, the least the Obamas could do is toss Anna Wintour a nice Vogue cover and some lovely spreads of the White House. (There's a chance that's all Anna really wanted, anyway.) The Washingtonian reports that a team from Vogue was seen "moving cameras into the residence" early this morning for a photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz, who shot Michelle's last cover for the March 2009 issue. Also of note: The President's schedule is apparently open today, so he may pose in a few shots himself.

Sunshine Might Help Love Bloom, Study Suggests

THURSDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- People looking for a date might want to wait for better weather. Flirting is most effective when the sun is shining, according to new research conducted in France.

The study involved an "attractive" 20-year-old man who approached women aged 18 to 25 walking alone in the street and asked them for their phone number. These advances were made on both sunny and cloudy days when the temperature was about the same.

Women were more receptive to being approached and flirted with -- and more likely to give their phone number -- on sunny days (about 22 percent) than on cloudy days (about 14 percent), according to the results of the study, which were published online recently in the journal Social Influence.

The findings suggest that flirting is more likely to have a positive result on bright days, said study author Nicolas Gueguen, of the University of South Brittany in France.

It's the first study to examine how weather may influence courtship or dating behavior, he noted in a journal news release. But the association between weather and flirting success noted in the study does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Previous research has found that other environmental factors -- such as romantic music, pleasant smells and certain colors -- make people more likely to flirt or exchange phone numbers, according to background information in the news release.

Other studies have also found that the weather can affect certain social behaviors. For example, sunshine makes people more likely to help strangers, answer a survey or leave bigger tips in restaurants, the researchers noted.

Most U.S. Soldiers May Suffer From Sleep Problems

THURSDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- When you think of all the challenges that soldiers face, poor sleep might not top the list. But sleep problems and lack of sleep are common among active-duty U.S. military personnel, according to a new study.

The findings show the need for the military to make changes in sleep practices and in attitudes about sleep, the researchers said.

They looked at 725 active-duty members of the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy, and found that 85 percent of them had a sleep disorder. The most common was obstructive sleep apnea (51 percent), followed by insomnia (25 percent).

The participants slept an average of only about 5.7 hours per night, and 42 percent of them reported sleeping five hours or less per night. Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep a night to feel alert and well-rested the next day, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

The researchers also found that about 58 percent of the participants had one or more medical conditions. Of service-related illnesses, the most common were depression (23 percent), anxiety (17 percent), post-traumatic stress disorder (13 percent) and mild traumatic brain injury (13 percent).

Nearly 25 percent of the military personnel were taking medications for pain, according to the study, which was published in the February issue of the journal Sleep.

Those with PTSD were twice as likely to have insomnia, and those with depression or pain syndrome were about 1.5 times more likely to have insomnia than study participants without these conditions.

"While sleep deprivation is part of the military culture, the high prevalence of short sleep duration in military personnel with sleep disorders was surprising," study author Dr. Vincent Mysliwiec, chief of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., said in a journal news release.

"The potential risk of increased accidents, as well as long-term clinical consequences of both short sleep duration and a sleep disorder, in our population is unknown," Mysliwiec added.

Natalie Portmans Hair is Too Severe in the New Miss Dior Chrie Fragrance Ad (Forum Buzz)

Miss Dior Cherie Spring 2013 - Natalie PortmanNatalie Portman is still going strong as the face of Christian Dior's Miss Dior Chérie fragrance, but truth be told, the new ad for Spring 2013 leaves a little something to be desired. It’s not that the ad looks bad per se – the gimmicky oversized perfume bottle is par for the course and the Raf Simons–designed dress looks beautiful, but wouldn’t the structured gown have been complemented better by loose, flowing hair?

As the ad is, Natalie’s hair looks far too severe, and far too casual. Though it’s clear she’s sporting a ponytail, it almost takes a second to process that fact.

“Nice picture but I think she should let her hair down,” ChristyLeReveur commented. “She looks much older in a ponytail.”

Anlabe32 posted, “It doesn’t look finished. Something’s missing.”

What’s missing is any excitement about this perfume.

Keri Russells Hair: An Illustrated History

Tight squiggles of curly hair were never as cool as when Felicity stepped out of a cab and onto the sidewalk outside of the "University of New York." For four seasons, teenage girls envisioned a life where Scott Speedman caressed our golden tendrils and pecked our radiant skin and spice-tinted lips with sweet, sweet kisses. But, in the middle of season two, the producers and writers made Felicty cut off all of her hair. Ratings dropped significantly. Some say it was because the show switched nights; many more blamed the errant chop job.

Dolce & Gabbana Skipped Their Court Hearing

The never-ending tax fraud trial against Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana proceeded today with a court hearing in Milan, where members of the Italian IRS accused the designers of hiding their earnings to avoid taxes. Such topics are deadly boring, so we'll sum it up quickly: in 2004, the designers sold their brand to Gado Srl, a "Luxembourg-based holding company" -- or so they claimed. Tax officials believe that Gado is actually operated in Italy, and the whole transaction was basically a front to give the Italian IRS the runaround. Luxembourg's corporate tax rate is 4 percent, compared to Italy's 45 percent, which gives Dolce & Gabbana plenty of motive to pull this off.

As for proof, Italian officials have several emails indicating that Gado was managed in Italy, and cited the suspiciously "below-market" price that Gado got for Dolce & Gabbana. The prosecutor not only implicated the designers themselves, but also Domenico’s brother and board member, Alfonso Dolce, and managing director and board member Cristiana Ruella.

As usual, the designers were not present at court, apparently choosing to uphold their attitude of pretending the case "doesn't exist." Their lawyers have denied all charges. Two more hearings are scheduled for February 6 and February 20 -- just in time for Milan Fashion Week.

Joan Smalls is a Vision in Black and White in Prabal Gurungs Spring 2013 Ad Campaign (Forum Buzz)

Prabal Gurung Spring 2013 - Joan Smalls photographed by Daniel Jackson

There’s a reason (okay, many reasons) Joan Smalls is models.com’s reigning #1 model. She’s stunning, and she knows how to move and pose in a way that commands a photograph. All of these qualities are on full display in Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2013 ad campaign, which was styled by Tiina Laakkonen and photographed by Daniel Jackson.

“It’s quite powerful and beautiful,” hfgl described.

“This campaign looks spectacular,” fashionlover2001 posted. “The clothes look amazing on Joan and just pop out. Her poses are a hit and her face looks flawless.”

Legolas wrote: “I looove the composition of each ad, the lighting and everything regarding art direction is perfect... Joan's poses are awesome and easy, she really is one of the best posers in the industry because she always makes the clothes look appealing, but I would have liked more diversity in her expressions. Looking at all of the images together, as a whole campaign, makes them appear redundant ... but each of them work very well separately, and that's what really matters at the end.”

Legolas has a point about the redundant facial expression, but when it’s such a good face does it really matter? He was able to overlook the repetition, and so am I. I love how simple and striking each image is, and despite being in black and white, Joan makes the clothes come alive.

Dakota Fanning Talks About Her Younger Sister Elle's Daring Style In New Interview

Elle Fanning is the ultimate avante-garde dresser, wearing everything from hot pink eye shadow to Prada Judo flatforms on the red carpet and she can even make a school uniform seem oh-so cool. Alexa Chung is a fan of her style, she inspired Rodarte and she was the face of Marc Jacobs A/W 2011 campaign. But remember Elle is only 14 making her the most intimidatingly hip chadult of all time?

Well it seems her older sis Dakota also thinks she's achingly cool, as she has spoken out about Elle's style in a cover interview with US Glamour. ‘She’s very uninhibited and will try pretty much anything. Even the way she dresses— she dresses totally for herself,’ Dakota said. ‘She risks being made fun of… by me, which I sometimes do, because I’m an older sister! But I totally admire her and think she’s very cool.’ We do too.

Another topic of conversation in the interview was that banned Marc by Marc ad campaign. In case you’ve forgotten, when Dakota was just 13 she starred in a campaign shot by Juergen Teller where she held a big purple perfume bottle by her crotch. The UK Advertising Standards Authority though that Dakota looked under 16 and was in a provocative pose, so it was seen as sexualising a child.

Dakota has spoke out about the controversy for the very first time and said: ‘If you want to read something into a perfume bottle, then I guess you can. But it’s also like, ‘Why are you making it about that, you creep?’ I love Marc and trust him, and we just laughed about it.'

Now back to fashion’s child prodigy, Mis Elle. If you still need proof that she is the bravest gal on the red carpet take a look at her style evolution in the gallery below...

Victorias Secret Petitioned for Mastectomy Survivor Bras

Breast cancer survivor Debbie Barrett and her 27-year-old daughter, Allana Maiden, are meeting with Victoria's Secret representatives at the company's New York headquarters this morning to deliver over 118,000 signatures petitioning the brand to make a line of "Survivor Bras" for mastectomy survivors. Allana started the campaign on Change.org a month ago with the following message:

My mom is a breast cancer survivor — 21 years cancer-free! I'm so inspired by her strength and hope, and after everything she went through, it doesn't seem fair that shopping for bras is such a discouraging, time consuming and frustrating ordeal. Many women who undergo mastectomy surgery because of breast cancer suffer from body image issues. It doesn't help that they don't have the option of buying the pretty bras they wore before their battle with cancer, and specialty stores can be hard to find, forcing them to order bras online that they have to send back because they don't fit properly.

People Can Emit Flu Germs in Air Up to 6 Feet Away, Study Finds

THURSDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- People suffering from the flu can give off small virus particles into the air at greater distances than previously thought, putting the health care workers who treat these patients at increased risk for getting the virus themselves, researchers report.

The investigators, from Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina, suggest that more studies are needed on how the flu is spread. Infection-control guidelines for health care providers may also need to be updated to help these workers protect their health.

The study was published in the current edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"Our study offers new evidence of the natural emission of influenza and may provide a better understanding of how to best protect health care providers during routine care activities," the researchers, led by Dr. Werner Bischoff, wrote in the report.

For the study, Bischoff's team screened 94 patients with flu symptoms who were admitted to the emergency department or inpatient care unit of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center during the 2010-2011 flu season. Health care providers at this hospital are required to get a flu shot, the researchers pointed out in a Wake Forest news release.

The investigators also collected air samples within one foot, three feet and six feet of the patients screened. As the air samples were taken, no aerosol-generating procedures -- such as bronchoscopy, intubation or CPR -- were performed. The researchers also recorded the number of times the patients coughed or sneezed and rated the severity of these symptoms. The patients also answered questions about their condition and how long they had been sick.

The study authors found that 65 percent of the patients tested positive for the flu. Of these people, 43 percent released particles containing the virus into the air. Those who emitted the highest levels of the flu virus into the air reported having the worst flu-like symptoms. These patients also had the highest viral loads in their collected samples.

Most of the flu virus found in the air samples was contained in small particles up to six feet away from the infected patients. Although concentrations of the virus decreased with distance, the researchers noted that at this range health care providers may still be exposed to infectious dosages of the flu.

Bischoff and colleagues also said that some patients were what they called "super emitters," and gave off up to 32 times more virus than the other patients. These people, they concluded, may be more likely to pass the flu on to others.

Dr. Caroline Breese Hall, from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y., pointed out in an accompanying journal editorial that the findings "question the traditional belief that influenza is primarily spread by close contact with an infected person or by direct contact with infectious secretions."

And Dr. William Schaffner, chair of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, also commented on the study. "Influenza vaccination, although not perfect, is the best tool we have to protect health care workers -- and their patients -- from influenza illness," he said in the news release. Schaffner was not involved with the study.

Paris men's shopping guide: Where should David Beckham shop?

Colette
The ultimate concept store, Becks won't go un-noticed by the cool types and tourists who frequent Colette, but he will be able to pick up a tightly-edited selection of off-duty pieces by Kenzo, Comme des Garçons and Saint Laurent that will prove to Victoria he's more than capable of shopping solo. Throw in the hippest edit of design-led books, quirky accessories and Becks will delight the family with his finds every time he steps off the Eurostar.

213 rue Saint-Honore, 1er arrondissement

Berluti
Nestled on the boulevard which bears the name of his new club, the Berlut i address is a must for Beckham's little black book. A bootmaker since 1895, the menswear brand has kitted out the likes of Andy Warhol, and Marlene Dietrich - for whom its first pair of hiking-style boots were made. Now owned by luxury conglomerate LVMH, this exquisite brand could certainly teach Beckham a thing or two when it comes to his own designs.

Hermès
We all know David's wife Victoria is more than familiar with Hermès (she reportedly has a collection Birkin bags worth around £1.5m) but David should definitely make a date with the iconic leather brand's rue de Sèvres store. Housed in a former swimming pool, the vast space effortlessly showcases the luxurious collection of accessories and ready-to-wear masterfully executed by Véronique Nichanian.

Arnys
Just opposite the architectural wonder that is Hermès, this tailor has been crafting made-to-measure suits for Paris gents since 1933. With Jean Cocteau, Orson Welles and Yves Saint Laurent having passed through its doors, the current design duo (brothers Jean and Michel Grimbert) have ensured the house has evolved with the times. Beckham should make a beeline for Arnys' 'La Forestière' jacket - a style inspired by the classical gamekeeper's jacket, and which the designer told Nowness has since been worn "worn by university professors, artists, even prime ministers who wish to indicate a move away from classical, banker-style suits."

Ami
Ex-Dior and Marc Jacobs design assistant Alexandre Mattiussi founded Ami in 2011 with the aim of creating a compete wardrobe for men that is well-designed, easy to wear and chic. Name-checked by GQ as one of the magazine's favourite new French brands, Mattiussi's designs don't cost the earth. Having set up shop on the newly hip boulevard Beaumarchais, Beckham could make a day of it and get distracted by the avenue's numerous motorcycle shops on his way to concept store Merci.

Carven
VB's already got a whole lot of Carven in her wardrobe, and now there won't be any excuses for Beckham to do likewise. Catering to everything an off-duty footballer's wardrobe is crying out for, (thanks so the brilliantly talented creative director Guillaume Henry) we'd like to see Beckham in this season's burnt orange rollnecks and navy blazers to see how he pulls of that Parisian je ne sais quoi.

Melinda Gloss
Described by fashion blog Ten Days In Paris as being the perfect place to find "great pieces for modern dandies", menswear designer Melinda Gloss now has two stores in Paris: one on the Left Bank and one at Le Marais. We can see Beckham snapping up a colourful knit or two for spring from the rue Madam's minimalist store in the sixth arrondissement.

Surface to Air
Beckham need never have an 'I've got nothing to wear' moment after he pays this cult store a visit. Actually a clothing line and a studio (which produced ad campaigns for the likes of Givenchy and Louis Vuitton fragrances) New York magazine described S2A as the company the aforementioned big brands "hire to stay cool."

Kitsuné
A fashion brand and a music label, brands don't come much cooler than Kitsuné. Collaboration is the name of the game for this achingly branché brand, with Pierre Hardy, Colto Mortedo, Petit Bateau and Mackintosh all joining forces to produce one-off collections for Beckham to bring back across the Channel.

L'Eclaireur
Founded over 30 years ago, L'Eclaireur (which translates as 'to scout') was the capital's first concept store. Now operating six outposts in the City of Light, may we suggest that David heads to the Rue de Sévigné, where 120 screens and sliding panels conceal the clothes. Conceptual artist Arne Quinze told Hipshops.com how he wanted the store is a "fantasy in which I hope everyone will find a story for themselves." Off you go, Becks.40,

Kim Kardashians Bright & Early L.A. Workout

In regards to the "Keeping up with the Kardashian" star's pregnancy, her mom Kris recently dished about Kim's cravings, and said, "Pizookies. ... It's a giant cookie and I think it's at BJ's and I think it has ice cream on top, but right now it's all about the Pizookies."

Some Parkinson's Patients Discover an Artistic Side

THURSDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- Some people with Parkinson's disease discover untapped artistic abilities after their diagnosis -- a phenomenon that seems to be related to their dopamine-enhancing medication.

Over the years, reports have popped up in the medical literature on Parkinson's patients who suddenly discover they are painters, sculptors or writers at heart.

Dan Joseph is one of them. After being diagnosed with the movement disorder a dozen years ago, the former doctor eventually took up painting. But it wasn't because he planned on becoming an artist.

"A friend of mine said, 'You're not doing anything. Why don't you paint?'" said Joseph, a 79-year-old Santa Barbara, Calif., resident.

He decided to follow that advice and soon discovered that when he painted, his hand tremors improved. He also discovered that he actually had talent; about six years after first picking up a paintbrush, Joseph has had three solo art exhibitions.

No one knows how common it is for Parkinson's patients to find their inner painter or creative writer, according to Dr. Rivka Inzelberg, of Tel Aviv University and Sheba Medical Center, in Israel.

But when she pulled together past case reports on 14 such patients, Inzelberg found that the phenomenon does appear to be related to treatment with levodopa and so-called dopamine agonists -- Parkinson's drugs that enhance the action of the brain chemical dopamine.

One patient, for example, suddenly became interested in creative writing after starting levodopa and a dopamine agonist. That interest waned, however, when the drug doses were cut, Inzelberg reported in the Jan. 14 online edition of the journal Behavioral Neuroscience.

Parkinson's disease arises when dopamine-producing cells in the brain die off over time. That leads to symptoms such as tremors, rigid muscles, slowed movement and balance problems. Levodopa and dopamine agonists -- drugs like Requip (ropinirole) and Mirapex (pramipexole) -- help make up for that dopamine loss.

But dopamine is not only involved in movement; it's also connected to the brain's "reward system." And it's well known that some Parkinson's patients on dopamine-enhancing drugs develop so-called impulse-control disorders -- such as compulsive gambling and hypersexuality (commonly known as "sex addiction").

Inzelberg said it's possible that for certain Parkinson's patients, the medications lower inhibitions that once held back any creative impulses.

"It is also possible that dopamine is involved in creativity in general," Inzelberg said. That theory, she noted, is based on the observation that artists who suffer psychosis -- which involves excessive dopamine activity -- can become remarkably productive. Think Vincent Van Gogh.

That's all speculation, though. Experts know little about why some people on Parkinson's drugs suddenly find creative inspiration. But it does seem to be related to the medications themselves, agreed Dr. Anhar Hassan, an assistant professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., who was not involved in the report.

"This does suggest that the medication is driving the behavior," Hassan said.

But, she added, "it would be giving false hope to imply to patients that if they start on medication, they'll become artistic."

While no one knows how common this medicated-related creativity might be, it is almost certainly far less common than negative side effects such as impulsive gambling. In her own study, Hassan found that about one in five patients on Parkinson's drugs developed some form of impulse-control problem.

Dr. Martin Niethammer, a neurologist at North Shore-LIJ's Cushing Neuroscience Institute in Great Neck, N.Y., said he's seen many patients who develop problems with impulse control while on Parkinson's medications, but only one or two who seemed to become more creative.

Both he and Hassan said the phenomenon is probably rare -- though it may be under-recognized because patients do not think to tell their doctors about it.

Another thing that's not clear, Niethammer said, is how many of the patients in the current report developed a "talent" in writing or painting, or simply an interest.

Of course, if the activity brings them pleasure, it doesn't really matter. "If this brings joy to people, then that's great," Niethammer said.

In some cases, the creative expression seems to bring more than enjoyment: It also seems to help some patients with their tremors, according to Inzelberg.

That's what happened for Dan Joseph. Painting seems to calm his tremors, and he feels like his vision becomes more "acute." "I've found that I can sit for hours and paint," said Joseph, who has also recently taken up poetry writing.

And despite the art shows, the fact that he has talent comes second for Joseph. "I really paint for myself," he said. "I feel happy when I'm painting and I'm creating."

Smurfettes debut fashion line to show at New York Fashion Week

Miss Piggy's got company on the fashion scene. While the karate-chopping diva may boast a series of designer clad TV appearances and fashion cameos, Smurfette is set to have her very own real-life fashion show.

'Le Look Smurfette' will showcase at New York's Fashion Week on February 13. The brainchild of Sony Pictures Animation and Junk Food Art House, the two parties are hoping the blue-infused fashion will create hype ahead of the July 2013's film The Smurfs 2.

SEE: Miss Piggy's fashionable life in pictures

And while one might wonder what the models will tote as the autumn/winter '13 Smurfette look - seeing as the blue leading lady's signature uniform is a flimsy white dress, white heels and white elf-like cap - Sony have sourced design help from Highsnobette's Lois Sakany and Samia Grand-Pierre, WWD reports.

The two editors-come-designers have harked back to the fictional character's Belgian creator Peyo, whose first Smurf was drawn in 1958, for their creative inspiration. A long-sleeve crewneck top imprinted with 'Parlez-Vous Anglais' will appear, while a sweatshirt covered with vials of 'blue essence' channels a more modern interpretation of Smurfism in all its, um, blueness.

Katy Perry, the voice of Smurfette in the new film, will sadly not be attending the show in the Conair Style360 space. And we doubt Smurfette's fashionista rival, Miss Piggy, will either.

Drew Barrymore Talks about her Crusade in Harper's Bazaar March 2013

In between her motherly duties and newlywed bliss, Drew Barrymore took a beat to front the March 2013 issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine.

After the 37-year-old "Charlie's Angels" star rocked a few poses for photographer Daniel Jackson, she opened up to the mag about her super relaxed style along with her wine obsession.

Highlights from Miss Barrymore's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to Harper's Bazaar!

On her relaxed style:
"I wear sweatpants than I find on the floor. It's my crusade to help women feel good about themselves."

On her daughter, Olive and keeping her away from the spotlight:
"I know she didn't sign up for that. I had such an exposed childhood. I appreciate my journey, but I don't want that for my kid. Not any of it. It has nothing to do with whether I liked my childhood. I really did. But as a parent, that isn't the childhood that I'd provide."

On expanding her family:
"It was very romantic for me to make this while she was growing inside me. I like the multigenerational-family aspect, in the vein of a Lauder—if we're so lucky that it stays around that long. She may want to be a food stylist, a mathematician, a scientist who will save us all. I just know that the family part really appeals to me."

On her obsessions:
"I live for makeup and I like wine. These are my truths!"

Best Bet: H&M Ponytail Ring

Now, before you scoff at today's Best Bet —  "It's just a hair tie!" (looking at you, disgruntled commenters) — we'd like to take you back a few seasons to fall 2011, when Dries Van Noten sent a model down the runway with slicked-back hair, secured by a wide band in gold. Then, in a runway-to-real-way experiment, we tried to jam our horselike hair through the tiny opening of some old ring we found. It was impossible. The result was a mess.

But oh, how technology has advanced: This ring-shaped metal clip from H&M comes with an elastic attached (Step 1: Secure ponytail) and then opens at the hinge (Step 2: Clasp the pony in one fell swoop).

Who ever thought unwashed hair could look this chic?
