Most Seniors Get a Good Night's Sleep, Study Says

FRIDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- A new study challenges the common belief that most seniors go to bed early and have trouble sleeping through the night.

Researchers conducted phone interviews with nearly 1,200 retired people, aged 65 and older, in western Pennsylvania and found that more than half of them said they slept at least 7.5 hours a night and slept between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.

About 75 percent of the seniors said they slept an average of more than 6.75 hours per night. The other quarter said they slept fewer than 6.7 hours per night and had sleeping difficulties and daytime sleepiness.

Sleep quality in seniors may depend largely on the health of the individual, rather than on the person's age, the University of Pittsburgh researchers said. They also noted that daytime sleepiness in seniors is often associated with medications, illness, and poor nighttime sleep, and may not be associated with age.

The study is published in the journal Healthy Aging and Clinical Care in the Elderly.

"Our findings suggest that in matters regarding sleep and sleepiness, as in many other aspects of life, most seniors today are doing better than is generally thought," lead author Timothy Monk, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, said in a medical center news release.

"The stereotype of most seniors going to bed at 8 p.m., sleeping very lightly and being unduly sleepy during the day may be quite inaccurate, suggesting that 60 really is the new 40," he added.

"The take-away for older adults is that if you can keep yourself healthy and avoid or treat age-related diseases and disorders, then you'll be able to sleep like a younger adult," Monk noted. "Although some seniors do have huge sleep problems which need to be understood and treated, the majority of seniors are not reporting significant problems with either nocturnal sleep or daytime sleepiness."

Diane Von Furstenberg's Red Carpet Date Was a Literal Dog

Image via WENN

Diane von Furstenberg totally lucked out earlier this week when she got to attend the Neiman Marcus x Target Holiday Collection preview party on the errr...arm (leg?) of Bullseye the Target mascot. A few years ago, I read about a woman that paid for her Macbook Pro by selling out ad space on its surface, so her computer became a kind of billboard whenever she worked from a coffeeshop (she was a freelancer, so this was a near-daily occurance). I would do that, but with my face.

Dear Target, Let's talk. I will go out with a giant bullseye drawn around my eye — like all the time, except maybe not on dates? — and you just have to cover my food, drinks, and cab fare. Maybe also my clothing? Would not want to tar the Target (haa) brand image by looking like a slob.

Summer Just Got Twice as Nice Thanks to a Second Capsule Collection From Vanishing Elephant

You know how you always want what you can’t have, and then when you have it you don’t really want it anymore? Not so with previously menswear-only Vanishing Elephant and the womenswear collection they finally released in March this year after being inundated with requests from female fans after the brand was launched in 2008.

Vanishing Elephant’s debut Spring 2012 womenswear collection proved so popular that it sold out, and to compensate they’ve unexpectedly dropped a second capsule range which is now available in stores. There are pastoral liberty print shirts aplenty complemented by high-waist minis in navy corduroy and loose-fit trousers screaming to be unsystematically cuffed at the hem.

Again, relaxed yet careful tailoring and silky, breathable fabrics are hallmarks of the designs, with intricate details like a crisp Peter Pan collar doing their duties for the requisite “contemporary twists.” Also, shoes: If your summer brogues aren’t perforated and neon-accented or patent and covered in dreamy florals, don’t even bother.

The Vanishing Elephant High Summer women’s edit is now available in stores and online.

Marion Cotillard & Marcel Take in Gucci Paris Masters

Enjoying a sporting event with her adorable son, Marion Cotillard relaxed at the Gucci Paris Masters at the Paris Nord Villepinte on Friday afternoon (November 30).

The "Inception" actress sported a casual ensemble with a makeup-free face as she toted around her son Marcel.

Marion's husband Guillaume Canet was also in attendance and gave his boy a grand view by placing him atop his shoulders.

In career news, the 37-year-old's new film "Rust and Bone" recently premiered and is quickly gaining Oscar-buzz.

When discussing the sex scenes in the film, the talented actress said, "You know when it's an awkward situation, you have to do something out of it. ... But those scenes were very special, because usually I'm not very comfortable with sex scenes. But that time was very different, because the sex is a big part of this movie. Without it, we would miss something."

Enjoy the pictures of Marion Cotillard at the Gucci Paris Masters 2012 (November 30).

Angelababys Balenciaga Outfit Was Certainly Well Timed

Today, a Chinese celebrity who goes by the name of Angelababy wore a skirt and top from Balenciaga's spring 2013 collection, which we all know now was Nicolas Ghesquière's last for the brand. This was a very clever move on her part, as today's the day when wearing Balenciaga will get you tons of Google hits, and American bloggers will stumble upon your photo and decide to read your Wikipedia page, which is a veritable treasure trove of passages like this one:

[Angelababy] also starred in the Japanese web drama Tweet Love Story in July 2010. The basis of the drama is audience participation via Twitter; four of the scenes contain a missing line spoken by Angelababy that are later completed from selected viewer tweets with the hash tag #tweetlovestory.

Possible Affordable Care Act Glitch: Too Few Doctors

FRIDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Many doctors who would be most likely to care for patients who become newly insured under the Affordable Care Act may not accept new patients, according to a recent study.

Under the act, it is expected that up to 50 million currently uninsured people will get some type of health insurance coverage.

Doctors who currently care for a large number of uninsured or Medicaid-covered patients are known as "safety-net physicians." Many people who become newly insured under the Affordable Care Act are likely to turn to these doctors, according to the researchers at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Their study suggests, however, that these doctors may not accept new patients.

The researchers looked at a 2009 survey of 840 primary-care doctors. Of those, 53 percent were safety-net providers, which means that more than 20 percent of their patients were either uninsured or covered by Medicaid.

Half of all the doctors in the survey said they were accepting new patients who were uninsured or covered by Medicaid. Safety-net doctors, however, were much more likely to accept both types of patients, with 72 percent taking new Medicaid patients and 61 percent taking new patients with no insurance.

Study authors noted that the care of Medicaid and uninsured patients is concentrated among a limited number of safety-net physicians and that 28 percent of safety-net doctors who treat Medicaid patients and 39 percent of those who treat uninsured patients are no longer accepting new patients. This suggests that the current health care safety net may have reached its capacity.

"This study raises very serious concerns about the willingness and ability of primary-care providers to cope with the increased demand for services that will result from the [Affordable Care Act]," study senior author Eric Campbell said in a hospital news release. "Even with insurance, it appears that many patients may find it challenging to find a physician to provide them with primary-care services."

The researchers said strategies designed to increase the number of safety-net physicians and provide them with more support could help ensure that newly covered patients have access to primary care.

The study appeared online Oct. 12 in the American Journal of Medical Quality.

Study: Cystic Fibrosis Patients Struggle to Exercise

FRIDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Children and teens with cystic fibrosis have impaired blood vessel function, which may affect their ability to exercise, a new study suggests.

Exercise is recommended to combat lung complications associated with cystic fibrosis.

Researchers had 15 cystic fibrosis patients, aged 8 to 18, pedal a stationary bike as long and hard as they could. It was leg fatigue, rather than lung problems, that forced them to stop pedaling.

Further investigation revealed that the cystic fibrosis patients could take in oxygen as well as a control group of 15 children and teens without cystic fibrosis, but their muscles were not as efficient at using oxygen. The researchers also found that the cystic fibrosis patients' blood vessels didn't dilate as well as those of the healthy children and teens.

This was due to the reduced ability of blood vessels to respond to important clues, such as expanding when exercise or stress increase the body's demand for blood and oxygen, the researchers said.

The study, published in the journal Chest, provides the first evidence of impaired blood vessel function and exercise intolerance in children and teens with cystic fibrosis. The blood vessel dysfunction could contribute to the exercise intolerance, which is an independent predictor of death in youngsters with the disorder, regardless of their lung function.

The impaired blood vessel function seen in the cystic fibrosis patients may be linked to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which may impair the body's ability to use nitric oxide, a major blood vessel dilator, explained study corresponding author Dr. Ryan Harris, clinical exercise physiologist at the Medical College of Georgia and Institute of Public and Preventive Health at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Cystic fibrosis patients tend to live with a chronic, low-grade inflammation resulting from a chronic state of infection. This is because their thicker-than-normal lung mucus traps inhaled bacteria and viruses that are normally cleared from the body.

About 30,000 Americans have cystic fibrosis, and the median predicted age of survival is the mid-30s, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Kate Middleton Plays Field Hockey in McQueen

Today, Kate Middleton and her bangs visited her alma mater, St Andrew's, where she met with pupils and unveiled a plaque to open a new artificial-turf playing field for the school's field hockey team. As she was a member of said team during her St Andrew's days (from 1986 to 1995), it was only fitting that she christen the field herself. And despite her decidedly nonathletic outfit — high-heeled boots and a tartan skirt suit by Alexander McQueen — she gamely picked up a stick and scrimmaged with the kids.

J.W. Anderson Replaces Christopher Kane as the New Versus Designer

J.W. AndersonIt’s been quite the year for 27-year-old J.W. Anderson which has seen him showcase his collection at London Fashion Week thanks to being selected as a NEWGEN recipient, create a fab Topshop collection, and acquire a loyal celebrity following including Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe, and Pixie Geldof. Now, fresh from winning the British Fashion Awards’ Emerging Talent award earlier this week, Donatella Versace has officially released a statement saying that he’s set to design the next Versus capsule collection. So, as we bid a fond farewell to Christopher Kane after 3 years designing Versus, we know that he’s set to be replaced by a designer that is equally as edgy.

Anderson’s Plans for Versus

Anderson has stated that the Versus line exemplifies purity, and explores the relationships between a boy and a girl, a girl and a girl, and a boy and a boy. How will this translate to his designs? A white palette, clean cuts, and an androgynous aesthetic, perhaps? Your guesses are as good as ours, but there’s no doubt that we’re in store for quite the treat.

The collection will feature both women’s and men’s ready-to-wear pieces, as well as accessories, but you’ll have to curb your enthusiasm as the line will not available until next spring.

Too Much Eggnog? Here's Your Ultimate Holiday Beauty Survival Kit

Just in from a snowy walk you have a glowy flush, your eyes are bright and your lips are chapped pink. Unfortunately, you'll probably be just in from the central heating and fluorescent light when you show up to the holiday party. It can be hard to look holiday-ready for the myriad occasions expected of you throughout the holiday season. Just when you're completely sleep deprived, bloated, and hungover, it's time to see your entire extended family for the first time in a year. That's why you need a beauty emergency kit for the holidays. Here's what's in my go-to grab bag.

  • The Multiple

A multiple-use stick in a super flattering shade will work on cheeks, lips, and eyes in a pinch. NARS The Multiple is the classic, and their cult shade is Orgasm, a slightly shimmery peachy pink. Personally, I prefer a slightly darker shade, G-Spot. (Yes, the innuendo runs deep with this product.) This product works everywhere on your face, and has that "you, but better" quality everyone is always searching for. If you find a flattering shade, it's practically the only beauty product you need. It's super portable and you'll be surprised how much you find yourself reapplying a cheek product once you actually have it on hand. Really perks up your entire look.

This is another cult favorite. If this is a bit more than you usually spend on beauty, the key in looking for a substitute is something that comes with two shades for blending or using in different ways. This conceals dark circles from too many eggnogs the night before or wrapping presents until 2 a.m. masterfully. You'll want to use the light shade under eyes, and the darker shade on blemishes or any splotchiness. With an array of shades to choose from and then the further ability to blend to a perfect match, it's the individualization that makes this product a must have.

Once I was turned on to this product, I saw it everywhere at New York Fashion Week and on beauty shoots. This is like the sleep deprivation remedy for your face. (For your mind, you're going to have to roll the dice with those 5-hour-energy fear-mongering stories.) This brightens and tightens and just gives your skin that "glow" that is so hard to define and replicate. Fun fact: this product is sold once every 20 minutes worldwide. You're going to need moisturizer after running in and out from the harsh heat to the wind and blistery cold, so it might as well be an awesome moisturizer.

People notice your face almost more than your clothes, and the easiest way to appear dressed up is to put on a statement lipstick. Even in your regular clothes from work, you'll look like you've put in extra effort or changed your look up a bit. MAC Ruby Woo is considered a universally flattering red lipstick, but if you are just really not a red lipstick person, whatever your brightest, most daring lipstick is should take up permanent residence in your makeup bag for impromptu festive cocktails and those nights you don't get home to change before festivities.

This is a new perfume, and a new perfume always makes me feel a little special and is a good conversation piece. And this one is especially interesting since the Black Dahlia doesn't actually exist, but is an invention of Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci. It's a feminine fragrance. One of the most important aspects for the purposes of our current topic is that it's long lasting. If you apply your perfume in the morning and forget about it, then you need something long-lasting to get you through holiday soirees. A noticeable (not overwhelming) scent helps you appear more put-together and polished even if you didn't have time for a major beauty routine. Also if you didn't have time to shower.
