Unless you've been on a fashion hiatus of recent, you will have noticed that Nineties street wear is back in the fashion spotlight. Born on the streets of New York and L.A in the early Eighties, streetwear isn't new to the fashion scene. Kicking off the trend were Nike when they snapped up soon-to-be-superstar basketball protege Michael Jordan from their rival sports label adidas back in 1984, and Nike continued to dominate the urban streetwear sneaker market. Other brands such as Champion, Carhaart (remember their signature straight leg baggy trousers!?) and Timberland started jumping on the bandwagon emblazoning tees and sweatshirts with their logos too.
Following a backlash in the Noughties against overly-branded clothing and accessories, mega-star songstress Rihanna and Brit newbie Rita Ora have been spearheading the return of streetwear onto the world's fashion scene in 2012. It began with fashion's obsession with sporty footwear - trainers have gone from a practical essential to a key purchase of the season. Nike's Air Jordans have become a fixture in both Rihanna and Rita's wardrobes with vintage styles going for up to £800 on eBay. Even luxury shopping boutiques have made designer high tops an important part of each season's buy. What's more, Paris and Milan based fashion houses such as Miu Miu and Yves Saint Laurent have now made pimped high tops firm fixtures in their collections each season. My-theresa.com Buying Director Justin O'Shea said "'Modern street' has taken over the retro revival which has been trending for the last few seasons. We have experienced a huge sales response to luxury trainers from brands such as Isabel Marant, YSL and Christian Louboutin. This sneaker movement is definitely going to continue through to next summer!"
But a new wave of UK and US streetwear brands are going mainstream courtesy of their A-list following and there's a plus side - they're super affordable too. UK label Trapstar's baseball cap or sweatshirt are key to channelling this look. Seventies label Boy London, Criminal Damage, Diamond Supply and Vision Streetwear are all part of their daily style formulas.
