Men's Notebook: Stormy rivalry

STORMY RIVALRY
What does the former owner of Mackintosh do when he steps down as the managing director after nearly 30 years with the iconic rainwear brand? Easy, he buys a factory in Scotland and goes into competition. That is precisely what Daniel Dunko - along with Mackintosh's former brand manager Gary Bott - decided to do when he set up Hancock. This new brand has launched a small collection of rainwear made using traditional methods but cut and detailed in distinctly modern style. Shown here is the GTS Article 2, a single-breasted coat made with rubber-bonded cotton (£665). The brand, named after Thomas Hancock, the Victorian creator of waterproof 'vulcanised' rubber, has also worked with the British tailor Timothy Everest to create three limited-edition styles ( hancockva.com ).

HARD AS NAILS

Filing one's nails is not normally regarded as a particularly manly activity. Unless of course the emery board is in the shape of a dagger, chainsaw, meat cleaver or baseball bat. These novelty items are by the American designer Shelley Getzendanner, whose Ambiguous Armaments are a response to heightened airport security checks. They cost £8 each from the Conran Shop ( conranshop.co.uk ).

CURE-ALL

The British firm Lewis Leathers, founded in 1892, has kitted out such diverse clients as RAF pilots, Steve McQueen and Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys. The cult label's fans include the British indie band the Vaccines (below), as well as motorcycle enthusiasts, nostalgic punks and Japanese Anglophiles ( lewisleathers.com ).
