Madonna described his heels as 'better than sex' and here at Grazia Daily, we have to agree. So it was a well deserved honour when Manolo Blahnik picked up the gong for Outstanding Achievement at this year's British Fashion Awards. The shoe master is well and truly enshrined as an icon in the halls of luxury fashion history thanks to his elegant, perfectly-made heels being worn by everyone from Carine Roitfeld to Marge Simpson. Oh, and let's not forget he was the man to tempt Victoria Beckham out of her sky-highs with his Monk flats.
Mr Manolo has one or two royal customers too. Kate Middleton kicked off her tour of LA and Canada last summer wearing a Roland Mouret dress, a Smythe jacket and the designer's Calogera shoe. 'She's the most ravishing young woman in the royal family,' he told us of dressing the Duchess. 'It's fantastic and such a great honour. I think she wore my shoes once, but I'm not very good on keeping track of TV and newspapers.'
Another of Blahnik's leading ladies is Sarah Jessica Parker, who not only trots from red carpet to red carpet in his creations, but gave them plug after plug during her Carrie Bradshaw days. 'Ms Parker gave me a huge push all over the world so until I drop, I'm very grateful to her.'
And finally, with Christmas parties on the horizon, who better to ask about what we should be wearing on our feet. 'It's up to you!' says Mr Blahnik. 'I never say you should wear this or that, you should do whatever you want to do. But it is always nice to have a little bit of satin. I'm mad for satin.'
