Grazia Daily: Who is your ultimate style icon and why?
Susie Lau: I'm not very good at naming style icons. I think the words "icon" and "iconic" are thrown about too easily. I love free-spirited women from the past like Loulou de la Falaise, Anita Pallenberg and Anna Piaggi but they're not necessarily people I take style inspiration from.
Grazia Daily: What three items should every girl have in her wardrobe?
Susie Lau: I think everyone should have their own essentials. These are mine. A trench coat (it doesn't have to be a classic one though – my favourite one at the moment is a super frayed Junya Watanabe menswear trench), a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo Vara pumps and a grey marl sweatshirt.
Grazia Daily: What are your handbag essentials?
Susie Lau: Right now, I'm loving the Canon EOS M camera which has solved the fashion blogger dilemma of carrying a bulky DSLR. I've added some vintage ribbon to the strap so that I can swing it around. I seem to be wearing it a lot with my Kenzo bucket bag or I hang it around my neck with some vintage chains.
Grazia Daily: What’s been your biggest fashion faux pas?
Susie Lau: Wearing brightly coloured tights underneath white tights to get a pastel colour. I realised it made look like I was wearing a very strange interpretative dance costume.
Grazia Daily: Which shops do you rely on?
Susie Lau: Opening Ceremony, Dover Street Market and Liberty for designer stuff. Topshop, Whistles and COS for everyday stuff. Uniqlo for heat tech tops which I buy a lot of.
Grazia Daily: Who are your go-to British designers?
Susie Lau: Christopher Kane, J.W. Anderson, Simone Rocha for hardwearing are the ones I wear the most but I love the flamboyance of Louise Gray and Meadham Kirchhoff as well.
Grazia Daily: What's been the highlight of your career so far?
Susie Lau: Being asked to be on Woman's Hour on BBC's Radio 4. The next goal is get on Desert Island Discs.
Grazia Daily: What's your fashion fantasy?
Susie Lau: If I had bags of money I'd love to be able to set up a fund to contribute to the growth and development of British fashion designers. Ultimately, I really want to work with young designers because they're the ones I really really believe in.
Grazia Daily: Who's the nicest person in fashion?
Susie Lau: Suzy Menkes. I used to be really scared of her at shows but I discovered that she's extremely affable and I have the utmost of respect for her.
Grazia Daily: What’s been your favourite fashion show ever?
Susie Lau: In terms of shows I've seen in person, I think it has to be Comme des Garcons A/W 12-3. It was really powerful and I felt like we were all witnessing a seismic shift in fashion. True enough, that collection has had a big influence on the SS13 shows.
Grazia Daily: Which Spring/ Summer 2013 trend are you most excited about?
Susie Lau: Elegance gone wrong – see Celine and Miu Miu – I like the imperfections.
