Alexander Wang's appointment as creative director of Balenciaga has been officially confirmed today, and both the designer and his new employer have spoken for the first time.
"I am deeply honoured to embark on this new role for a brand and house that I have such great admiration and respect for," said Wang in an official statement to WWD .
The 28-year-old will begin in his new role immediately. It has also been confirmed that Wang will remain at the helm of his eponymous New York-based label.

Rumours that Wang had won the coveted role reached boiling point at the end of last week when WWD said "market sources" had confirmed his appointment and an official announcement was imminent.
François-Henri Pinault, chairman and chief executive officer of PPR, which owns Balenciaga, today commented: "Alexander Wang will use his creativity and his own research to reinterpret and immortalize the distinctive, modern and extremely innovative style imposed by Cristóbal Balenciaga."

It is not yet known whether Wang will present a catwalk show for the autumn/winter 2013 round of Paris Fashion Week shows which will take place in February and March, with Isabelle Guichot, president of CEO of Balenciaga, saying she doesn't want him to be placed "under unnecessary pressure".
Guichot added: "…we will have to figure how we want to present. We will figure out together the pace of next year," adding that she believes Wang will "embrace and enrich the unique heritage of the fashion house."

Wang succeeds Nicolas Ghesquière, who headed to up the storied French fashion house for 15 years, transforming it from an ailing couture house to a commercial and financial success. It is thought Ghesquière will start an eponymous label, although thus far nothing has been confirmed.
