Dover Street Market heads to New York

The store, which was masterminded by Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo, opened on Dover Street in London's Mayfair in 2004 and has become the go-to place for a variety of high-end designer labels, as well as more avant-garde brands. Another smaller branch was opened in Tokyo in March this year.

The New York store, which is slated to open in late 2013, will be situated in a 20,000-square-foot, seven-story building at 160 Lexington Ave. at 30th Street, which was formerly home to the New York School of Applied Design for Women, reports WWD .

Publicity-shy Kawakubo has been credited with revolutionising the retail industry through DSM, which also showcases art and installations and includes a café. Its arrival on Dover Street, which was previously home to mainly art galleries, encouraged other high-end retailers to move into the area - Alexander McQueen sister brand McQ have recently opened their flagship in the same street and Christian Louboutin has just opened his first UK men's boutique there, too.

Her ability to spot up-and-coming areas has already helped her open two extremely popular Comme des Garçons stores in Manhattan - one in the Soho district in 1983, which at the time was an industrial neighbourhood and another in Chelsea in 1999 - so it's very likely we'll see other retailers following DSM to Lexington Avenue.
