Fantasy Advent Calendar: December 3

In our fantasy castle in the sky, we'd be impeccably turned out horseriders. Which explains what's behind door three of our Fantasy Advent Calendar...

Long before Hermès became synonymous with exquisitely stitched handbags, the house was a saddle-maker of high renown. Founded by Thierry Hermès in 1837, the company was built on the relationship between men and horses, as Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the creative director and sixth generation Hermès, recalls. 'We should be more grateful to horses than we have been, because they helped us survive for 10,000 years. Our leather craft is a repository of that tradition.' Indeed, Hermès has been quietly crafting equipage for years - the saddles used by the Academy of Equestrian Arts in Versailles are produced by the French house - but this year the company chose to refine the jumping saddle, in collaboration with Rodrigo Pessoa, a three-time showjumping world champion. The Brasilia saddle is a sleek, pared down design; a combination of velvety buffalo, supple calf and tough cow leather. Edged in signature orange goat skin piping, the seat is slightly hollowed to aid with balance; the saddle flat and thin; and the tree more widely arched to ensure optimum contact with the horse's back. All these details conspire to favour 'close contact' riding - perfect for riders seeking a minimalist saddle with a subtle edge.

Brasilia saddle, £4,000 (020-7499 8856; hermes.com ).
