'Twas a Very Vintage Holiday: Closed Set with Julie Bensman

With travel plans booked, holiday gifts purchased, and end-of-year bonuses yet to be doled out, 'tis the season to feel a wee bit cash-strapped. So when it comes time to gifting oneself with the perfect ensemble to wear on the holiday soirée circuit, make sure it’s one which:

In such scenarios, vintage is almost always the best fashion play. Still, walking the line between vintage done right (and oh-so-very wrong) can be a seriously shaky one. I caught up with Sierra Fromberg, owner of Grey Era Vintage in NYC's East Village, to gain some fashion footing.

Julie Bensman: When searching for the perfect party dress, what rules should we keep in mind?

Sierra Fromberg: First thing is always COMFORT! It doesn't matter how bangin' you look in the super-tight mini you're rocking in the hopes of finding yourself under the mistletoe. If you feel uncomfortable in any way, it will show.

Second is fit. This is why vintage is such a great option: There really is a style to fit every shape. It may take some trial and error to find what that style is, but that's what good, knowledgeable vintage shop owners are for!

Last, don't feel obligated to stay on trend with what you see in magazines or on TV. Vintage allows you to seek out a truly individual look, which, at the end of the day, is way cooler than showing up to a party in the same dress as the girl who reads way too many magazines.

JB: What about accessories?

SF: The most stylish people always know how to mix and match vintage with contemporary designs. A great pair of vintage earrings or a clutch is an easy way to try vintage without committing to an entire look. When in doubt, a classic red or vampy nail is always a great "accessory" and works with pretty much any era.

JB: My planner is packed with holiday events for work, family and friends. Which vintage pieces are right for each occasion?

SF: For an office party, it depends on what type of office you work in. If it's casual, go for something fun — maybe a Boardwalk Empire-inspired sequin dress. If you work in a more corporate environment, best to play it on the safer side. Think simple, darker-hued dresses but make sure they're tailored to perfection. Velvet pants are also a great alternative to a party dress, and can be worn with a simple lace shell for a more traditional look, or paired with a sparkly top.

For holiday cocktails with your buds, NO RULES APPLY!  Nothing says ladies' night out like a short leather skirt, sequin top, and a killer pair of heels.

JB: I've seen your closet and to say it's envy-inducing is the understatement of this year. I’m dying to know what's on your wish list this season.

SF: I have a serious Balenciaga addiction, so I wouldn't mind in the slightest if Santa brought me their Neo Folk messenger bag. I'm also jonesing pretty hard for the Isosceles Opal earrings by Erica Weiner.
