Which Decade Had The Most Stylish Hairstyles?

Hair news just in: the Sixties have been crowned the most stylish decade when it comes to hairstyles. A survey conducted by ECigaretteDirect.co.uk asked 800 people to name which decade over the last 60 years had the most desirable hairstyles - and it's no surprise that those Swinging Sixties topped the poll with over a third of the votes. Just think of all the incredible hair icons from that decade and we're sure you'll agree that it spawned some of the most fabulous styles, from Twiggy's bob to Audrey Hepburn’s beehive.

Meanwhile, the retro styles of the Fifties like the ‘Marilyn’ and the ‘Pompadour’ – sported by the likes of Elvis and James Dean - came second in the survey with just over a quarter of you voting the era as hair-tastic. As for the Nineties, is it any wonder that only a fifth of voters (19% to be exact) thought that the decade had the coolest coiffeurs? Well, no. The only credible 'do from that era was Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel cut, which became the decade’s defining hairdo.

And let's not forget the Seventies, which gave us the Farrah Fawcett flick, although only 11% named it as their barnet choice. The Naughties polled rather low on the list, gaining just 8% of the vote. Might that be down to that ‘Croydon facelift’? But actually it was the Eighties which came bottom of the hair list with just 2%. Yep, those dreaded mullets were a serious crime against gorgeous tresses.

Cheryl Cole and Lana Del Rey favour a 60's style hair-do

You only need look at the stars of today to see that retro styles are still hot hair news. See Cheryl Cole in those recent L'Oreal ads and Lana Del Rey whose voluminous hair is now her signature style mark. If you want to get involved, we've outlined our top 5 tips for getting enviable, Sixities-style locks...

1. Shampoo - always choose a volumising shampoo and conditioner which will give you a bit of a head start whilst you wash your hair

2. Blowdry - turn your head upside down and blowdry it like mad to create volume

3. Back-brush - use a fine brush to backcomb the top section of the hair, allowing it to stand up more and give the illusion of volume

4. Mousse - use a hand sized amount of volumising mousse throughout the top and layers of the hair to add thickness and follow with a last whoosh with your hairdryer

5. Spray - Last of all, use some hair spray to set the look in place. We recommend L'Oreal Elnett (and Cheryl swears by it!)
