Australian Models Continue Their Domination of the Spring 2013 Campaigns

Three months ago, it was about who had the punchier collection; now it’s whose campaign makes best use of an Australian model. The photographic ads for Hedi Slimane and Raf Simons’ debut collections for Saint Laurent and Christian Dior, respectively, have now both been released, with both designers inadvertently fueling their media-fabricated rivalry by choosing local faces to front them. This comes after model of the moment Ruby Jean Wilson’s domination of both the Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton campaigns.

Slimane’s black and white shots of Julia Nobis for ‘Part 1’ of his campaign garnered mixed reviews from the forums, with his choice of model finding more favour than his monochromatic photography style. For Simons’ campaign, he’s chosen Willy Vanderperre to lens and six-foot Brisbane stunner Nicole Pollard to star alongside the comparatively exotic Daria Strokous, Marie Piovesan and Anna Martynova.

Pollard was booked as a Dior exclusive for the label’s Spring 2013 show in Paris, in which Julia Nobis also walked. The surrealist photographs are a massive departure from Dior circa Galliano, but even those of the opinion that they look less like a fashion campaign and more like screengrabs of a Stepford Wives video game can’t argue that choosing relatively unknown faces is an inspired move for a revamping brand.

Removed from the supposed feuding but not from the obsession with local faces is Valentino. Photographer Sarah Moon shot the Sunshine Coast’s Codie Young, who excels at looking pasty and a bit drugged in the best way possible, in a ghostly campaign created in a Parisian studio.
