5 Homemade Hair Mask Recipes That Really Work

Here at tFs we're starting to really get into the spirit — and results — of DIY beauty, skin and haircare. Mixing together masks and home remedies is becoming a favored pastime, it's fun, it's easy and it's affordable. From masks to one-ingredient remedies to fix common hair woes, we've got your most common concerns covered. Take a look at these solutions for some serious healthy hair and scalp help. What have you got to lose?

How often do you add product to your locks? If you're training your hair to be less greasy, you're at least adding a dose of dry shampoo once per week. If you're not on a training schedule, then it's likely you're looking at the addition of hair spray, shine spray, wax and other products to create today's hottest hair looks. Keep your hair healthy by removing product build-up once per week with baking soda. That's right, this is truly a miracle product. One of the many ways you can use it is to keep your scalp healthy and flake-free. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 3 cups of water and use it to rinse your hair after you shampoo, then condition as usual. Alternatively, you can squeeze out your normal amount of shampoo onto your hand and then sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on top. Mix together with your palms and use it to shampoo your locks. Your hair will be shiny and silky!

Red hair dye notoriously fades fast — especially if you're dealing with hard water that isn't filtered. One very effective way to combat the problem without re-dying is to add some oomph. This is a temporary solution, perfect for a special night out, when you don't have time for a full-on touch up. So what's the magic product? Good old cranberry juice. Simply saturate your hair with it by pouring it on. Let it sit for about five minutes and then rinse. Style as usual. Bring new meaning to ravishing red.

Pure protein makes hair stronger and more resistent to breakage. You've probably had a stylist suggest a protein treatment at one point. And it probably wasn't cheap. Try this alternative instead: Dissolve a packet of gelatin (not JELLO, but gelatin) in hot water. Massage through hair and leave in for about 30 minutes. Rinse. Presto change-o.

Did you know that eggs are packed with vitamins A, E and D that nourish hair and skin? And that something called fatty acids add moisture and conditioning? Well, now you do. And you also understand why whipping up an egg and adding it to your shampoo can make your hair more manageable and beautiful. Just be careful your shower water isn't so hot it cooks the egg! You can also make a simple mask by whipping up eggs and apply them to your dry tresses. Wrap some plastic wrap over it, leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse.

If you've ever hosted friends on game day, you may have a few left over brewskies to contend with. Use them up, in your hair. The yeast actually works to plump your strands and the barley, hops and/or wheat keeps them strong. Use flat beer (leave fresh beer open and out for a couple of hours), put it in a spray bottle and spray your dry hair with it. Or make a mask by combining 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil, half a cup of flat beer and a raw egg. Apply to clean, damp hair, let it sit for 15 minutes and rinse.
