I think we always set our sights too high for beauty at the Oscars because it's by far the most mainstream awards show and as a result, most celebrities opt for safe (read: boring) looks instead of daring ones. That said, there were a few significant trends in play last night. With only a few dark lips in sight, we saw more pink lips than ever before, which solidifies the color as the lip of the season. We also saw a lot of nude lips and while some could have benefit from a bit more color, some worked the look to their advantage. Here are some of the most notable looks of the night:
Shimmer has gone out of style as of late but we love Amy Adams' matchy eye and lip combo. Her retro updo also looks sufficiently evening appropriate while still relaxed and easy to wear.

Her hair may be a touch too long for this look but we love her full brows and petal-pink lips.

Charlize's recent hair journey has been rocky, to say the least, but her understated look is 90s without being retro. We love that she didn't clutter her neckline with jewels and relied on her cropped hair to make the statement.

As far as makeup goes, this is hardly Seyfried's best look, but we have to give her recognition for at least trying something different for the Oscars. This amethyst toned smoky eye would have been perfect with a less severe dress and hairstyle and her soft pink lip paired well with the heavy eye.

Her grey smoky eye and pinky-plum lip may be traditional but Lawrence's skin is so glowing that this look is more a testament to her facialist than her makeup artist.

As one of the few women wearing a bold lip last night, I think we can all agree that Chastain's beauty look comes up tops. With her signature strawberry hair, glowing porcelain skin and well defined eye, we can't fault it.

We've come to expect great things from Kerry Washington, especially after her stellar Django press tour, and this look was a happy surprise. A pale pink lip offset her smoky eye and the center part was an inspired choice.

Many have chastised Stewart for her tousled hair but we're more focused on her sun-kissed, desert toned smoky eye. It's perfect for this transitional season and a great alternative to the grey or metallic smoky eye.

Old Hollywood waves have been a staple at the Oscars for years but we have to point out how incredibly healthy, shiny and multi-tonal Witherspoon's hair looks here. Her colorist deserves a golden statue.

We've come to expect the mega lashes and retro liner on Adele but we loved her choice of lip color. This dusty pink works perfectly with her flushed alabaster skin and heavy liner.
