It’s a bastion of British high society, dodgy outfits and lots of really, really drunk people - yes, we’re talking about Royal Ascot, home of the ‘comedy’ fascinator and outlandish outfits. Or not, as was the case last year when real life fashion police patrolled the grounds.
Yes, Ascot’s dress code was tightened up and consequently an army of purple-clad soldiers were hired to look out for rebellious race-goers. Armed with hampers full of fascinators and shawls – for uncovered heads and shoulders – and ties for men, these police kept attendees in check.
So what are the rules for 2013? 'A day at Royal Ascot is very special and dressing accordingly is an important part of the experience,' Grazia Daily has been informed by an Ascot representative. 'Ladies within the main Grandstand enclosure are encouraged to dress in a manner as befits a formal occasion.' Ooh-err. So we recommend taking note of the Dos and Don'ts below...

Ascot 'style': What NOT to wear
DO wear a hat, headpiece or fascinator. They must remain on your head at ALL times.
DON'T even think about sporting a strapless dress or top. Sheer straps are also a no-go.
DON'T touch those cropped trousers or thigh-grazing shorts. All legwear must be full length and suitably modest.
DO keep covered up with jackets or pashminas. Bare shoulders? Unacceptable!
DON'T flash your midriff, even if you do have abs like J-Lo.
DON'T forget that fancy dress, novelty and branded or promotional clothing are not allowed. So leave your panda onesie at home, people.
And what of the gents? Male attendees are required to wear a suit with a shirt and tie and girls aged 17 or under should be dressed for a formal occasion, smart summer dresses are suggested. Hats, headpieces or a fascinator may be worn but are not compulsory. As for boys aged between 13-17, they should wear a suit or jacket with a shirt and a tie. Younger boys (12 or under) should be dressed smartly but are not required to wear a jacket or tie.
Got it? Just to drive the point home, there's a handy video of outfit suggestions.
