My friends and I like to call it Brigitte Bardot hair: the actress-cum-sex-kitten from the 60s always had perfectly volumized locks. The only problem is that achieving the easy-breezy style is easier said than done. And while some of us are blessed with hair that naturally rises to the occasion, others are stuck with tresses that fall flat. We did some research and it turns out with a little bit of effort and the right products even fine limp hair can be done up — literally. Here are some step-by-step instructions for creating volume that will have you channeling one of beauty's most loved stars. Not to mention a classic look that never goes out of style, whether it's "all about" bangs, waves or sleek and straight.
Start by stepping into the shower and washing your hair with volumizing shampoo. Make sure you get into the roots and work up a nice lather.
$23.79 at Target.
Follow up with volumizing conditioner. It's easy to assume labels on these products are little more than an advertising gimmick, but they really work. After you're done conditioning, leave it in and add a bit more volumizing shampoo to your roots for extra oomph. Then rinse it all away until the water runs clear.

A touch of this in your roots while your hair is still wet adds even more volume-prep and is totally worth the extra step.
$18.19 at Target.
You're ready to start blow drying. Bend down and, you guessed it, blow dry your hair focusing on the roots. Using a vented brush to comb your roots forward as you dry will allow the maximum amount of air to enter, creating more volume. When your hair is nearly dry, move on to step five.
$25 at Folica.
Whip your head up and put in large velcro curlers. Finish blow drying. The curlers will train those roots to stay lifted once they're dry and your hair is let down.
$3.90 at Unique Looks.
This is step is optional. If after your previous efforts, roots aren't heightened to your expectations, feel free to use a teasing comb at your crown. Part your hair the way you want it for your finished look. Take a section of hair and apply the brush to the bottom, brush in short strokes toward your scalp (keeping your part in tact). Repeat on all sections at the top of your head. Use your regular brush to gently comb hair in longer strokes toward hair ends, starting at the root and finishing at the tip.
$12.99 at Folica.
By now you should have gleaned that a big key to getting this look is through volumizing products. Just like mousse, shampoo and conditioner, there's volumizing hairspray on the market. Use it to finish off your heightened tresses and see if your volume doesn't last from your morning meeting to beyond cocktail hour.
