The great and the good of the British film industry gathered together last night to celebrate the Jameson Empire Awards and what a do it was. From hobbits to homicidal caravanners, cinemas finest turned out to pay tribute to some of its most recent efforts as voted for by the readers of Empire magazine.
There was plenty of fresh talent on hand to present the awards. Laura Haddock, known for her role in The Inbetweeners movie and set to take the female lead in forthcoming Da Vinci’s Demons presented the first gong of the night to The Woman In Black for Best Horror. It was a good night for Daniel Radcliffe who then scooped up the Empire Hero award. He was delighted that the award symbolised his graduation from Harry Potter to bonafide actor and seemed especially pleased with the choice of walk-on music (My Way).
Singer Ellie Goulding was also on hand to present an award. She told us that she wasn’t quite sure why she was at a film awards but with a glass of wine in hand, found the whole evening quite relaxing amidst her hectic world tour schedule. In fact, she’d not long returned from a trip to Miami where she filmed her latest music video cosying up to Calvin Harris. However, she had to make a quick trip to American Apparel the day of the shoot as her luggage was misplaced on the flight over and the outfit she’d intended to wear was missing. Eek!
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey scooped up Best Sci-Fi/ Fantasy film and its leading man, Martin Freeman, took home Best Actor for his embodiment of Bilbo Baggins. He was definitely chuffed as Grazia saw him dancing up a storm into the early hours at the after-show party hosted by the Café de Paris. Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t available to accept her Best Actress award for The Hunger Games but at least that spared her the embarrassment of another potential trip, fall or wardrobe malfunction.
The undoubted champion of the evening was Sam Mendes who not only nabbed Best Director and the Empire Inspiration Award, but Skyfall also took the award for Best Film.
Not one to miss an opportunity, Dame Helen Mirren used her acceptance speech for the Empire Legend award to highlight the male dominance in the industry and spoke of how she hoped that in the years to come, more females would be recognised for their contribution. She was also heard saying that her recent dabble with pink hair was just ‘a wash in, wash out dye’ and that had she had time, she would have gone green for that evening’s festivities.
