Kate Middletons Subtle vs. Kim Kardashians High Fashion Pregnancy Style

Kim Kardashian’s pregnancy style has been generating plenty of column inches, including a not so flattering cover headline in the New York Post this week. But Kim is not the only one deciding to keep true to her own style bump or no bump, indeed from Kate Middleton to Lara Stone, the new way to work pregna-chic is to merely adapt your style signatures to fit your changing shape.

Where K-Middy has gone low-key and subtle, Kim Kardashian has defied her critics to continue to work va va voom style in head to toe high fashion. In Mugler and Givenchy tailoring, Tom Ford and Louboutin skyscraper heels, Alaia leggings, Balmain trousers and J Brand maternity jeans, Kim has certainly spurned traditional maternity wear. Stepping out yesterday in an embellished grey wool dress from Lanvin, Kim’s tactics have sparked a debate on the way women present themselves during their pregnancy.

Baukjen de Swaan, founder of Isabella Oliver, the maternity line beloved by A-listers including Reece Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner, says that pregnancy fashion isn’t about abandoning your style signatures. "When you become pregnant, wanting to look stylish doesn’t suddenly go out of the window. You're still you, just with a different silhouette. Seek maternity alternatives of the clothes you usually like to wear and mix and match your accessories - it's all about staying true to your personal style.”

Where Kim is getting flak for her choice, the Duchess of Cambridge continues to get praise. Stepping out in a Topshop dress teamed with Goat’s ‘Redgrave’ coat in ivory, a recycled Emilia Wickstead emerald coat dress and a chic and simple Joseph peachy button up, the DoC has proved that successful pregnancy chic is all about adapting your style signatures to take in an expanding bump. Known for her mix of high street and designer styles and penchant for making do and mending – the Emilia Wickstead coat dress was let out to fit her new shape - K-Middy hasn’t abandoned the fashion formulas that have won her countless best dressed gongs just because she’s expecting.

So is it a case that super sexy high fashion don’t work with a pregnant silhouette and a more subtle approach like Kate’s is more fitting? Or is it that we are not use to seeing a women enceinte looking so done up?
