We’re not quite sure what it means when Willow ‘Whip-Ma-Hair’ Smith chooses the same ultra-chic Chanel jumpsuit that both Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Miley Cyrus have already worn, but it does highlight the power of the monochrome stripe.
Is Beetlejuice your stripes style icon?
Spanning all ages, styles, figures and budgets, black and white stripes have earned themselves an award as this season’s easiest trend to tap. Two men who have prompted the look: Mr Marc Jacobs and, erm, Beetlejuice: MJ’s mainline runway was a eye-boggling walking barcode, while the creepiest movie character from the underworld continues to be name-checked in the blogosphere for his two-piece (and rather snazzy) vertical striped suit.

Whatever the reference, A-listers are duly getting in line: In addition to Miley’s strapless wide-legged Chanel number, she’s recently worn three other monochrome Beetlejuice bits – including jeans (of which Hudson and 7 For All Mankind are doing great versions) and a shrunken little blazer from her new fashion BFF, Marc Jacobs.
Other Beetlejuice babes include Gwen Stefani – she’s a big fan of the leg-lengthening jeans, too – plus Solange Knowles, Rachel Zoe, Jessica Stam and Leigh Lezark. There’s no major secret to how you wear these stripes, but we would recommend always opting for tailoring rather than jersey – not only will a well-cut striped piece be more forgiving, but it’ll square up to the smart lines of the catwalk’s take on the mega-trend.
