Mother Knows Best: Experts Share their Best Beauty Advice from Mom

Mother knows best, right? In honor of Mother's Day, we asked beauty and fashion experts to reveal the best beauty or style advice their moms ever gave them and they're spilling their secrets!

  • Sadie Murray

    Style and beauty expert

“I hear my Mom's voice all the time when it comes to my beauty routine. My Mama always said, ‘If you want pretty skin, drink a ton of water, always wash your face before bed, get a good night's sleep and wear sunscreen every day.’ All simple and amazing tips that I follow every single day!”

“The best beauty lesson my mom ever taught me was, ‘Stop baking in the sun.’ It took me 25 years to actually listen to her, but it is the best advice for anyone! Luckily, I stopped in time to stay young.”

“Always ‘go up’ — when washing your face, applying face cream or anything else, never pull down. I remember watching my Nana getting ready for bed, her skin wrinkle-free well into her 80s, always reminding me to never pull down on my face. My Mom — and her equally flawless skin — repeats the same mantra. Gravity pulls down enough, we don't need to help it out!”

"My mother always says that makeup is incredibly fun to play with, and she is so right! For her, being an actress in the late 60s meant shape-shifting with lavish wigs and false eyelashes. So she always encouraged me to experiment and express myself through the colors I chose, whether it was purple eye shadow in 6th grade, green smoky eyes in my early 20s or my current obsession with hot pink lipstick. And now I'm lucky enough to get to touch, feel and try on makeup every day for a living, so thank you mom for steering me in the right direction!"

"After spending her teen years basking in the sun, my mom always said her skin suffered. As a result, she always stressed the importance of using a high SPF sunscreen, especially on my face. From an early age I used a moisturizer with an SPF in it, at the very minimum. Another thing that my mom has always conveyed to me is that that no matter what you’re wearing, you always look far better if you have good posture. I can’t count the amount of times she has reminded me to ‘stand up straight!’”

"The thing I always hear from my mom is, 'You have something just like that already hanging in your closet!' She really taught me to invest without actually investing. Find pieces that are a good price but classic enough to last. She also believes that jewelry is the icing on the outfit cake and always came running over to me with strands of necklaces to match my outfits."

“When cold New York winters would roll around and heat would flow from the vents, everyone in our home would fall victim to months of dry skin. Once the temperatures would start to drop, my mom would caution me to take shorter, cooler showers, as to not dry out my skin—and to apply moisturizer from head to toe, immediately upon exiting the shower. It was a bit difficult to shorten my showers, but making the water cooler always did help! At first, full body moisturization seemed like a chore, but now it’s a part of my skin care regimen that I never, ever skip.”

“My mom always told me to stay out of the sun and to wear sunscreen — even on cloudy days. I groaned as a teenager, but she said that someday I'd be glad that I protected my skin from the sun. She was ahead of the game on avoiding the sun, actually, and I'm so glad that I listened to her. Considering what we know now about how UV radiation can lead to melanoma and skin aging, I couldn't be more grateful that she was looking out for me. And, yes, it's nice to still be carded now and then. Thanks, sunscreen! Thanks, Mom!”

“My mom taught me to ALWAYS protect the hair — we both have the same naturally curly/frizzy hair (we sometimes call it our Jew-fro!) — and rain or humidity is deadly to even the best blowout. My mom taught me at an early age to carry a 'hair ER' pack with me: hair bands, clips, even a plastic shower cap. I may not be the sexiest girl in the next rain storm, but I'll have the best hair when I arrive at the party!”
