The cape is a very alluring item. With an in-built superhero swish, a blanket-like comfort and the ability to transform almost any outfit from sofa- to soiree-ready in an instant, there are many reasons to covet one come the colder seasons.
They enjoyed a resurgence back in 2011, when designers from Chloe to Lanvin put them back on the catwalk, then fell into charity shop bags countrywide as they suddenly found themselves out of vogue once again. But they're back and this time it's thanks to the red carpet.

As Gwyneth Paltrow so excellently demonstrated at the 2012 Oscars in Tom Ford, a cape really is a starlet's best friend. Then, when Lupita Nyong'o stepped onto this year's Golden Globes red carpet in a vibrant red Ralph Lauren caped wonder we were captured (or should we say cape-tured), hook, line and sinker by the trend.
Katy Perry followed suit just weeks later in a matching dress-and-cape combo by Dolce & Gabbana. While she may not have pulled the look off to perfection, it was, of course, the floral cape that caught our eye.

Though it's red carpet style that's tingled our trend taste buds, fear not, for the cape is setting itself up for a real-life comeback too. From shirts with in-built 'capelets' by the likes of Giambattista Valli, McQ and Maison Martin Margiela to caped dresses on the high street (find them at ASOS and River Island) to traditional cape coats and cosy cashmere - if you look around you, capes are, actually, everywhere. Or, you can always make like Kate and pick up a vintage one.
