Her new fragrance and garlic; Katy Perry on her favourite smells

Royal Revolution, which launches on July 23, is Katy Perry's second fragrance for Coty. And according to its marketers, Perry has put as much energy into her latest perfume as she does into her music.

Going through what she describes as a rebellious beauty stage, Perry's new Royal Revolution "invites you to be yourself". How? With a blend of pomegranate, pink freesia, jasmine, orange flower, vanilla, sandalwood and Perry's own personal favourite - blackthorn, which she added as a "curve ball. It was used in the dark ages as they thought it held power, so they used it in their spells," she tells us at her London press call. "We didn't want it to smell like grandmothers or bathroom sprays."

She's right, it doesn't, but then again the girl does have a nose for what smells good. Her other favourite aromas include garlic; an open wood fire; baby powder; the way the Park Hyatt in Paris smells; vanilla because it makes her happy and the smell of falling in love; "you know, that smell when you're lying under that person you love and they breathe on you," she says. Hmmm no we don't, but each to their own brand of scent.

Perry's fragrance shouldn't have too much trouble shifting; she is of course a modern beauty icon - although she names Gwen Stefani, Chloe Sevigny, Liz Taylor and Daphne Guinness as her own. The 29-year-old makes waves every time she colours her hair (which by the way she's planning a few more times before she hits the big 3-0), and each time she strikes a new beauty pose when performing the world takes beauty note.

Her favourite look? That purple-haired reign on the red carpet moment at the ASCAP awards back in 2012; "some of the other looks? I don't know," she tells us screwing up her face.

Perry's biggest beauty vices right now (apart from the hand cream and Oribe hair spray she's never without) however are inner confidence ("I love beauty, but without inner confidence you just start to look a bit clown like," she says) and knowledge. Where other celebrities use their star status for hot tickets to clubs and parties, Perry uses hers for private viewings at museums, galleries and exhibitions; "knowledge is your best weapon," she tells us, perhaps with a little spritz of her new riotous scent.
