Brooke Shields creates a line for MAC Cosmetics

Before you ask, yes there's a brow product - in fact there's two - in Brooke Shields' up and coming collaboration with MAC Cosmetics.

Describing the deal between herself and the beauty powerhouse which is MAC Cosmetics as "serendipitous," it sounds like the 49-year-old has enjoyed getting creative in cosmetics. "I loved being part of the process and having my taste incorporated into it," says Shields.

"I'm so used to having my make-up done by someone else - this was really my first time to delve in personally, rather than it being a mask that's put on for a certain photo shoot. And so many times you get asked to 'create' something but it ends up being 'put your face on this,'" she told WWD , who first reported on the super sized collaboration which drops in the UK this October.

We say super sized for this is the largest of all MAC Cosmetics' 'iconic' collaborations. Perhaps that's because Shields got up-close and personal; "I went through all of my make-up, opened it all up, looked at it all and started to decide what of each product I loved - whether it was from MAC or some obscure brand I got on a shoot in Japan." ("I've always paid close attention on shoots," she adds).

The story goes that it was on her barefaced, post-yoga, morning latte run that she bumped into her good friend and MAC Cosmetics senior vice president, James Gager - at the coffee shop, "where I think no one will see me without make-up," quips Shields. After a few more early morning meetings, Gager suggested they pen a product deal.

"Brooke resonates globally, and she keeps reinventing herself. She's an ageless beauty. She's also a mom, an actress, a model with everything happening all at once, like most modern women. She's the consummate all-American girl and a great role model." So great that industry sources estimate the collection will garner $5 million (£2.97 million) when it hits stores.

In keeping with the barefaced coffee run theme, Shields decided first on a collection for "a fresh-faced, cleaner, daytime look." But then again, she thought, no Hollywood actress's kit would be complete without red carpet make-up, so she also decided on a second collection that was more "vampy, with a big focus on the eyes." she says. The American beauty likens having to make the choice between a day or a night look like choosing a wedding dress, so she had to plump for both; "I like the natural part of myself, and I like the sexier side too. I'm both these things."

The 15 products include a super sized eyeshadow palette ("in every palette I've ever bought, there always seems to be something missing - like highlighter or a crease colour," she explains, so this comes with 16 shades for $85 - approx £51), a Veluxe Brow Liner and brow gel (naturally), two lipsticks, a bronzer, lip glosses, nail polish and blush. The product names? Hers too, even her puppy Pepper was the thinking behind the eponymous dark charcoal eye shadow.

We've also apparently got to thank her daughter Rowan for Shield's new focus on make-up. "She gets so mad at me if I take her to school without make-up," she tells us. "She's like 'Mom, you really need to wear make-up.' My response? 'Well, I'm not working. I don't really have to wear make-up.' And she is like, 'Um, you do.' And I'm like, 'How old are you?'" A good question, as her beauty style defies her 49 years somewhat, and if that's anything to go by we'd like to buy into the look too.
