The Last Word: Felicity Jones

Have you met Miss Jones? Of course you have. Felicity Jones first shot into public consciousness in 2000 as the feisty teen Emma Carter in The Archers , a role she held for nine years on the Radio 4 soap opera. But that face deserved to be seen, and after racking up Doctor Who and The Diary of Anne Frank on her TV CV, Jones's big-screen break came last year in the indie smash Like Crazy .

Her doe-eyed, pouty good looks haven't gone unnoticed, either. Burberry tapped her for its winter campaign last year, and Dolce & Gabbana has made her the new face of its Khol and Bouquet make-up collections. Jones, 28, who read English at Oxford, will next be seen in The Invisible Woman , the story of Ellen 'Nelly' Ternan, Charles Dickens's secret mistress.

I don't have much time for shopping so pick things up when I can. My favourite labels are APC, Isabel Marant and Agnès B because the clothes are cut small and have a simplicity to them.

I felt most beautiful on the red carpet in Proenza Schouler's mint-green dress (below) at the Gotham Independent Film Awards last November. I loved the colour and the style - dressy but still casual.

The shirt's my favourite item. You can pair them with so many things. I have a great plain blue shirt from APC, and a denim one from Dolce that I wear constantly. It's hard to find the perfect denim shirt, but this is it.

My most treasured item is the brown leather bag that my mum bought me from a little Italian shop for my 21st. It's supposed to be a vanity bag, but I use it as a handbag.

The most extravagant thing I bought last year was a navy-blue Miu Miu suit (pictured). It's quite 1960s: a short jacket with a T collar, and a short flared skirt.

I buy Wolford tights. They feel luxurious, fit so well and are really comfy. I think a dark opaque tight looks great in winter with a short skirt and a fitted shirt or jumper.

For autumn I'd love one of Miu Miu's little satchel bags (pictured) - they do them in all these lovely pastels.

I would describe my look as 'ladylike rock chick'.

If I could raid anyone's closet it would be that of Patti Smith or the French actress Anna Karina. I love Smith's androgynous style, and both women look fantastic in a slightly structured blazer.

I saw Philadelphia Story again recently, and I love Katharine Hepburn's character in that. She's a great comic actress with excellent timing.

My favourite portrait of myself is the shoot I did for Italian Vogue with Tom Munro. The look was different from my own - it was sort of ladylike, but with a bit of S&M thrown in. It was styled by Madonna's stylist [Arianne Phillips], so that was pretty cool.

Wales is great for long walks and getting away from it all. I went to Seville recently. The culture there is fascinating and it has so much amazing architecture.

Whenever I go away I always take something to make it feel homely, such as a scented candle from Diptyque or a small cushion that I bought in Marrakesh.

My boyfriend and I live in east London. The flat is a little sparse because I haven't been home very much. I'm trying to build up a collection of things I like, but at the moment there are just books everywhere. I'm reading Steve Jobs's biography, and The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje.

I once shared a flat with a Maltese girl who taught me to make great meals with rice, fish and vegetables. I love cooking, especially Italian food, but I don't have the time to experiment much.

I've just watched Into the Abyss a documentary about capital punishment in the US, and there's a line in it where one of the people interviewed says, 'How are you going to live your dash?' The interviewer says, 'What do you mean by dash?' And the reply is, 'The line between your birth date and your death date on your gravestone.' That's such an incredible way of looking at life - how you're going to live your dash. I think part of truly living is to take opportunities as they arise and grab every moment as it pops up.
