Thanks to the wonders of social media, we've been given an insight into how New Yorkers are keeping their spirits up during Hurricane Sandy, from Alexa Chung wrapping up in a Barbour coat to Patricia Field starting a fashion hashtag. Today, brings news of how the hurricane is damaging not only buildings but the city's retail business.
NYC-based stores have been closed since Sunday, causing retailers to lose as much as $30 million per day, according to WWD. Whoa. Major department stores including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Henri Bendel and Macy’s have boarded up their flagship stores. Meanwhile, the subway system is unlikely to open for several days, preventing potential shoppers - as well as employees - from getting to those shops that are still open.
Shipments have been delayed, Net-a-porter suspended its same-day delivery service in the city and high-profile events have also been postponed, including the Prabal Gurung for Target launch due to take place on Tuesday. Fashionista also reports that there has been rumours of looting in Brooklyn and Queens.
And as the 'Frankenstorm' looms over Miami, Kim Kardashian - wearing a sharp white suit and snakeskin heels - was spotted hitting her local store today to pick up a hoard of basic supplies, including water and hurricane essential, Snickers. Next stop? Celine.
