First professional photos of Kate Moss up for auction

After almost a quarter of a century as one of the most photographed women in the world, little-known images of Moss are rare.

The pictures show Moss aged 14 in her first sitting with the fashion and portrait photographer David Ross, who was asked to do a test shoot with the aspiring model to see how she looked on camera.

They were taken in October 1988, soon after the teenager from Croydon was spotted waiting to board a flight at New York's JFK airport by Sarah Doukas, the model scout, who signed her to the Storm model agency.

Ross said: "Kate was a cool character, in the real sense of the word. She seemed like a tough or resilient typical teenager, comfortably fronting me up, perhaps covering up her nerves. I suppose what was refreshing was that she was honest. She wasn't trying to prove anything or act above her station. She didn't try to adopt a model attitude of self-absorption and superiority. "She was untarnished. A blank canvas. Neither she nor I had any idea what was in store for her."

Moss, 38, is now believed to be worth around £50 million.

The three black and white photographs are expected to fetch up to £1,200 each when they are sold by Bloomsbury Auctions in London on Friday.

Moss, who recently launched a book of photographs looking back over her career, said of her prospects as a teenager: "I wasn't the prettiest girl in class. No breasts, short legs, gangly teeth. I didn't think I was model material, that's for sure."
