Miss USA Contestant Shocked That She Owes Trump $5 Million

Sheena Monnin, the Miss Pennsylvania USA who resigned from May's Miss USA pageant, claiming it was rigged ("I witnessed another contestant who said she saw the list of the Top 5 BEFORE THE SHOW EVER STARTED," she wrote on Facebook), finally spoke to reporters about her resulting legal battle with Ze Donald. Earlier this month, retired U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Theodore H. Katz decided that Monnin defamed Trump's Miss Universe Organization, awarding it $5 million in damages. As quoted in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Monnin "was shocked that was ruled against me, frankly," and said, "the most logical course of action is to fight" the ruling, but she's exploring other options. Like ... reality TV, right? It's definitely reality TV.

Congress Nears Deal on 'Fiscal Cliff,' Obama Says

MONDAY, Dec. 31 (HealthDay News) -- Congress and the White House seemed to barely avoid falling over the so-called fiscal cliff late Monday afternoon, with agreement to head off widespread tax increases set for midnight.

But political and philosophical differences kept Republicans and Democrats from agreeing on legislatively mandated spending cuts, delaying decisions on how to reduce federal spending until after the start of the New Year.

"It appears that an agreement to prevent this New Year's tax hike is within sight," President Barack Obama said during an afternoon news conference updating the nation on the negotiations, the Associated Press reported. "But it's not done."

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the GOP leader of the Senate, working with Vice President Joseph Biden, agreed with Obama that a deal was drawing closer. Speaking on the Senate floor Monday, McConnell recommended that Congress act quickly to pass legislation raising tax revenue, and "continue to work on finding smarter ways to cut spending" next year, the AP reported.

The technical deadline to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts was midnight Monday, the last day of 2012. But passage of legislation by the time a new Congress returns to work at noon on Jan. 3, 2013, would likely avoid any unanticipated impact on taxpayers, the news service said.

The debate over how to reduce federal spending was not going as smoothly on Monday. Republicans have said they're willing to delay the across-the-board cuts, but only if Obama and his fellow Democrats agree to corresponding targeted savings from government programs, the AP reported.

The big stumbling block: What to do about $110 billion in automatic annual spending cuts over the next decade -- a process known as "sequestration" -- set to begin Jan. 2.

Failure to reach agreement on spending cuts could have a significant effect on health care in the United States, according to Kaiser Health News.

For instance, Medicare providers would see a 2 percent across-the-board payment cut, or $11 billion in fiscal year 2013. According to a September report from the Office of Management and Budget, hospitals would be hit hardest by the cuts, with payments slashed by about $5.8 billion, Kaiser Health News reported.

Seniors would experience no changes in their benefits, however, and Medicaid would not face any automatic cuts come Jan. 1.

The National Institutes of Health would have to contend with a $2.5 billion cut in funding for 2013, which would mean the agency would "have to halt or curtail scientific research," according to the OMB analysis.

Other federal agencies would face funding cuts as well, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ($490 million), and the Food and Drug Administration ($318 million), Kaiser Health News said.

Dr. David Katz, director of Yale University School of Medicine's Prevention Research Center, tried to put the debate over the fiscal cliff and its potential impact in layman's terms.

"To some extent, talk of a 'fiscal cliff' and its implications can seem remote. But there is a very personal element to all of this. If Medicare reimbursement is slashed, the federal government will, in essence, be cutting the income -- along with raising the taxes -- of physicians who don't work for the federal government. This certainly makes Washington gridlock personal for all of my fee-for-service colleagues. If they, in turn, translate resentment of this heavy-handed imposition into practice, this may get personal for Medicare patients who have a harder time accessing care."

And, he added, "massive cuts to the NIH (National Institutes of Health) budget may seem remote and impersonal -- unless the research that isn't funded as a result would have saved your life, or that of someone you love. Cuts to CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) may seem remote -- unless you are a victim of a neglected disease outbreak, or of a preventable chronic disease no longer the focus of research and programming.

"And cuts to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) budget may be someone else's problem, until the drug you need is languishing in the approval process; a drug is approved that should not have been and imposes its toxicity on you; or the uninspected food on your table is a vehicle for salmonella or E. coli," Katz said.

The Middletons Sell Royal Baby-Themed Paper Plates

Someone over at the Daily Mail noticed that the Middletons' company, Party Pieces, sells paper plates printed with the words "Little Prince" and "Little Princess" (in blue and pink, respectively) on their website, presumably for baby showers. Apparently this is grounds for accusing the Middletons of "cashing in" on Kate's pregnancy, even though the plates are on discount, suggesting that they've been around for much longer than the royal fetus. And Thus, the Burch Versus Burch Lawsuit Was Over

What was shaping up to be a spectacularly messy court case between ex-spouses Chris and Tory Burch has ended with an anticlimactic settlement. WWD reports that the Burches came to a peaceful agreement and will not pursue their various lawsuits, subpoenas, and counter-suits. As you might expect, the details of the settlement will be kept secret, and both parties probably want to put all this unseemly business behind them — hence this announcement on New Year's Eve, when the news will soon be overshadowed by alcohol and hangovers.

The 44-year-old blonde beauty looked toned in her various swimwear as she and her handsome hunk played with Alexander and Samuel on shore.

Later, Liev took his boys in to the water to show them how to don a scuba mask and work a paddle board while Naomi watched from a beach chair.

Being sure to get in some alone time, the couple, who have been together since 2005, enjoyed a stroll along the shoreline hand in hand.

Male Gaze: The Man With the Dropping Ball

Tonight, as we watch Ryan Seacrest announce a giant and glittering ball is dropping in Times Square, let's take a moment to pay him some respect. He is pretty good at that whole hosting thing, even as this is the first New Year’s Eve that he won’t have an assist from Dick Clark (R.I.P.). For the big night, as with all of his other big nights, Seacrest will probably wear a Burberry tuxedo, because he looks good in those. And though many of us will spend our night looking at the television, talking about how small or slight this man looks, it’s worth admitting a few things: The smile is nice. And the eyes are, too. So, maybe, just for an evening, we’ll give the guy a break?

Happy New Year, oh Cut readers. We’ll see you back here on Wednesday.

New Shade for the New Year: Indigo-Meets-Green

2013 will be a bright, bold year, so we suggest reaching for an equally unlikely color to mix into your new look for the year — a peacock combination of indigo with emerald green. Try using it as an offbeat contrast to wintry blacks or as an accent to pale pinks. Wear Dannijo's kaleidoscopic milk glass earrings to dress up your LBD at your next event, or with a sweater and heels for a date night by candlelight. Instead of your usual black bag, opt for Phillip Lim's optic color-block satchel — you'll wear it all year, as it's a color that looks fresh regardless of the season. Click on to see all 10 items in this daring hue.

Looks Like Belgium Will Remain in Need of Bernard Arnault

On Saturday, France's highest court overturned President François Hollande's plan to tax those who make more than €1 million ($1.32 million) — like Bernie — at a 75 percent rate, calling it unfair, the AP writes. It wasn't so much the 75 percent that bothered the court, but the distribution of income among families, i.e. "A household with two earners each making under €1 million would be exempt from the tax, while one with one earner making €1.2 million would have to pay."

Are You Guilty? 10 Ways We Body Shame Each Other

Loubie Lou/stone/getty images

1. Saying Things Like, “She Would Be So Pretty If…”
Have you ever uttered anything along the lines of, “But she has such a gorgeous face” or “She would be more beautiful if she put on a few pounds?” You are limiting your idea of beauty to a cultural stereotype. Beauty is not conditional. If you can’t say anything nice, maybe it’s time to learn how.

2. Judging Other People’s Clothes
While it’s fine for you to choose clothes any way you want, nobody else is required to adhere to your style. The person wearing that outfit is, in fact, pulling it off, even if you think she's too flat chested, big chested, short, tall, fat or thin. And fat people don't have to confine themselves to dark colors and vertical stripes, no matter who prefers it. And spandex? It’s a right, not a privilege.

3. Making It an 'Us vs. Them' Thing
The phrase “Real Women Have Curves” is highly problematic. Developed as a response to the tremendous body shaming that fat women face, it still amounts to doing the same thing in the opposite direction. The road to high self-esteem is probably not paved with hypocrisy. Equally problematic is the phrase “boyish figure” as if a lack of curves makes us somehow less womanly. The idea that there is only so much beauty, only so much self-esteem to go around is a lie. Real women come in all shapes and sizes, no curves required.

4. Avoiding the Word “Fat”
Danicing around the word fat is an insinuation that it's so horrible that it can’t even be said. The only thing worse than calling fat people “big boned” or “fluffy” is using euphemisms that suggest  body size indicates the state of our health or whether we take care of ourselves. As part of a resolution to end body shaming, try nixing phrases like “looks healthy,” or “is taking care of themselves,” and “starving” when what you actually mean is a women is thin.

5. Making Up Body Parts
We could all lead very full lives if we never heard the words cankles, muffin top, apple shaped, pear shaped or apple butt ever again. We are not food.

6. Congratulating People for Losing Weight
You don’t know a person's circumstances. Maybe she lost weight because of an illness. You also don’t know if she'll gain the weight back (about 95 percent of people do), in which case earlier praise might feel like criticism. If someone points out that a person has lost weight, consider adding something like, “You’ve always been beautiful. I’m happy if you are happy.” But if a person doesn’t mention her weight loss, then you shouldn't mention it either. Think of something else you can compliment.

7. Using Pretend Compliments
“You’re really brave to wear that.” By the way, wearing a sleeveless top or bikini does not take bravery. “You’re not fat, you’re beautiful.” These things are not mutually exclusive -- a person can be fat and beautiful. “You can afford to eat that, you’re thin.” You don’t know if someone has an eating disorder or something else; there is no need to comment on someone's body or food intake. “You’re not that fat” or “You’re not fat, you workout,” need to be struck from your vocabulary. Suggesting that looking fat is a bad thing is also insulting, so also out the door are, “Does this make me look fat?” and “I look so fat!” when you are a size 2.

8. Thinking of Women as Baby-Making Machines
One of my readers mentioned that her gynecologist called her “good breeding stock.” Also awful: “baby making hips.” Worst of all is when people ask fat people when they are due. As has famously been said, unless you can see the baby crowning, do not assume that someone is pregnant.

9. Sticking Your Nose in Other People’s Exercise Routines
A subtle form of body shaming occurs when people make assumptions or suggestions about someone’s exercise habits based on their size. Don’t ask a fat person, “Have you tried walking?” Don’t tell a thin person, “You must spend all day in the gym.” I have had people at the gym congratulate me for starting a workout program when, in fact, I started working out at age 12 and never stopped. I had a thin friend who started a weight-lifting program and someone said to her, “Be careful, you don’t want to bulk up.” How about not completely over-stepping your boundaries and being rude and inappropriate?

Eleven Ways Kimye Can Profit From Their Baby

This weekend’s announcement that Kim Kardashian is pregnant with Kanye West’s baby was basically a foregone conclusion for the coming year. Having nabbed the reality shows, the failed television nuptials, the equally-famous boyfriend, and more clothing and jewelry lines that even this fashion blog can count, Kim’s life lived publicly would not be truly successful until it reached a new, yet-unborn generation. She’s just competing with the women of her Internet-celebrity generation — Beyoncé, Katie Holmes, and Kate Middleton — as they all became/become mothers. But unlike those moms, Kim’s recurrent fame and subsequent fortune are so calculated that her baby could become a money-and-fame-facilitator even before it’s born. Here’s how:

Another New Year's Hazard: Drunk Walking

MONDAY, Dec. 31 (HealthDay News) -- With New Year's Eve approaching and champagne set to flow, cautionary messages about the perils of drunk driving abound. But this year one trauma expert addressed a far less publicized concern: drunk walking.

According to Dr. Thomas Esposito, of Loyola University Health System in Maywood, Ill., the pitfalls related to inebriated mobility -- with or without wheels -- stem from the fact that "alcohol impairs your physical ability, period."

"Every movement ranging from driving a car to simply walking to the bathroom is compromised," he said in a Loyola news release. "Alcohol impairs your judgment, reflexes and coordination. Alcohol is nothing more than a socially acceptable, over-the-counter stimulant/depressant and, especially during the holidays, alcohol is frequently abused."

More than a quarter century spent as a trauma physician -- currently as chief of the division of trauma, surgical critical care and burns -- has given Esposito a firsthand view of exactly where walking drunk can lead.

"From July 2009 to June 2010, 105 people were treated at Loyola after being struck by cars," he said. "Fifty-five had their blood alcohol content checked. Of those, 16 individuals, or 29 percent, were found to have had some level of alcohol in their system. Thirteen individuals, or 24 percent, had blood-alcohol concentrations at or above 0.08 percent, the accepted level for intoxication."

The somewhat under-the-radar issue has been tracked by numerous organizations, including the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which noted that as recently as 2008, nearly one in four pedestrian deaths among people aged 16 and older involved patients who had blood-alcohol concentrations above 0.08 percent.

When looking at nighttime and early-morning deaths, that figure increased to 53 percent.

"If they had been driving and were stopped by police," Esposito said, "they would have been arrested for driving under the influence."

"It's not just walking outside," he added. "We often see people who have been drinking that have fallen down the stairs or tripped at home and injured themselves. Others have unwisely chosen to 'get into it' with guns, knives, bottles and fists."

To lower your risk, Esposito advises that when drinking is in the cards, avoid wearing dark clothes and walk in groups so as to be more visible to cars when crossing streets. Party hosts, he added, should take responsibility for ensuring that drunk guests not be left on their own to walk home, and be offered the opportunity to sleep it off if necessary.

"If their mode of transportation is a car, you do things to prevent them from driving, such as calling them a cab or finding them an unimpaired chauffeur," he said. "If that mode of transportation is their legs, then you either drive them -- assuming you're not impaired -- or make them stay at home with you."

The Year of the Year of the Woman

In culture and in politics, 2012 was lauded as a banner year for the so-called fairer sex. During the Olympic games, NPR and Time and CNN hailed “the year of the woman” athlete; after the election, the Observer to Salon to NBC to Mother Jones proclaimed “the year of the woman” politician. Marissa Mayer’s appointment as CEO of Yahoo was taken as a sign that, even in the Silicon Valley boys’ club, the winds of change were blowing. When The Hollywood Reporter asked entertainment industry types to complete the sentence “If women ran Hollywood ... ” the consensus, at least from the men who were polled, is that women already do. “If women ran Hollywood,” said actor Joel McHale, “there would be hit romantic comedies about hunky male strippers, hugely successful film franchises about sparkly vampires, and music and dancing competition shows would dominate the airwaves — wait, are we sure women don't already run Hollywood?”

By the time Hanna Rosin declared the end of men, America had spent so much time cheering about women’s varied successes that the inverse didn’t seem like a stretch. Yet every declaration that girl power was ascendant came with a set of pretty heavy caveats. True, women made strides this year, but the real defining feature of 2012’s gender politics is how desperately everyone wanted this year to belong to women. Even when it didn’t.

Hillary Clinton Hospitalized With Blood Clot

MONDAY, Dec. 31 (HealthDay News) -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was admitted late Sunday to a hospital in New York City after doctors discovered a blood clot linked to a concussion she suffered earlier this month, a State Department spokesman said.

Clinton, 65, has canceled most of her public events over the past few weeks because of the head injury and "is being treated with anticoagulants and is at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours," spokesman Phillippe Reines said in a statement, The New York Times reported.

The clot was discovered during a regular follow-up examination and Clinton's doctors "will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," Reines said. "They will determine if any further action is required."

Doctors not involved in Clinton's care said blood thinners are typically used to dissolve clots, and patients may need to be on them for weeks or months.

Dr. David Langer is a brain surgeon and associate professor at Hofstra-North Shore-Long Island Jewish School of Medicine, N.Y. He told the Times that clots most typically form in the leg or in a major vein in the head. Quick treatment can break up the clot, but if left untreated these obstructions can cause a brain hemorrhage, he said.

Reines did not disclose the exact location of the clot. Speaking to Bloomberg News, Dr. Allen Taylor, chief of cardiology at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., said that it's not uncommon for clots to form in the legs in patients who are less mobile. According to Taylor, that might be the case for Clinton, who has been largely sedentary as she recovers from the concussion, and who spends long amounts of time sitting on long-distance air flights.

Clinton has a history of these legs clots, called deep vein thromboses. In 1998, as First Lady, doctors diagnosed a clot behind her right knee. In 2007, Clinton told the New York Daily News that the clot was "the most significant health scare I've ever had."

According to Taylor, the fact that Clinton is receiving blood thinners suggests that the clot is not within the brain.

"You wouldn't put a person on blood thinners if they had a head injury," such as a subdural hematoma, or a clot in the brain itself, he told Bloomberg. "You could have a bleed inside the brain. This is likely something completely different."

He said that people with a prior history of a deep vein thrombosis have a higher risk for subsequent clots. "Often flying is a particular risk -- people take certain measures [such as blood thinners]," Taylor said. "Getting up and moving around is the most important thing. She probably flies more than anyone else in the entire world."

According to Bloomberg, information on the State Department's website calculates that the Secretary of State has traveled 949,706 miles and visited 112 countries over 401 days -- about 2,084 hours or nearly 87 days spent airborne.

On Dec. 9, a day before Clinton was about to depart for a trip to North Africa, her staff announced that she had contracted a stomach virus and the trip was cancelled. On Dec. 15, Reines issued a statement saying that, "while suffering from a stomach virus, Secretary Clinton became dehydrated and fainted, sustaining a concussion." On Dec. 18, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Clinton was "on the mend," and by Dec. 28 Nuland added that Clinton would be returning to work the following week. But the discovery of the clot on Sunday seems to be another health setback.

"Chloe is more costume-y than I would want to be in real life. She'll wear a giant fake fur with high heels that cross the edge of insanity. In real life, I'm more grunge-y and gothy. I'm a proud child of the 90's."

On her boyfriend [Brian Geraghty]:
"He's a 'dude'. The guy's a surfer from New Jersey. He's great at acting and he's successful but I don't see him as an actor. He's not the guy who gets his hair and makeup all done up to go out and he's not reading 'Us Weekly' to see if he's in it."

On her role in "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23":
"I do think my character is breaking the mold for females on TV. It's always the boys who get to play the nut jobs and sociopaths. Guys usually get the funny lines and the girls often roll their eyes or have to set up the joke. She's smart and confident, but she's also a comic relief."

Stella McCartney Will Definitely Get to Dress Kate Middleton in 2013

The Queen has released her New Year Honours List for 2013, and Stella McCartney is on it because she designed the U.K.'s Olympic uniforms last summer. You know what that means: 1) She'll be photographed awkwardly holding up a tiny medal outside Buckingham Palace sometime next year, and 2) She'll definitely get to dress Kate Middleton's baby bump.

Lab Rat: This Mask Burns, But Leaves Skin Soft

Each weekend, I test out a few of the many beauty products to hit my desk so you don't have to.

GlamGlow YouthMud ($69): This mud is supposedly loved by Hollywood gals for its instantaneous "super sexy super radiant skin" effects in just ten minutes. Throughout, your skin will feel like someone has taken a small amount of acid and slathered it all over your face. The burning sensation, which I kept cool by fervently fanning myself with a leftover Christmas card, comes from detoxifying and hydrating ingredients like green tea leaf, volcanic minerals, and French sea clay. Once it's washed off — use a soft wash cloth to get every bit of the greenish, lavender-scented stuff  removed —your skin will feel smoother, softer, and look a bit pinkish and radiant in the cheeks, like you've just been out in the sun.

Kimye Is Having a Baby

At a concert in Atlantic City last night, Kanye West asked the 5,000 fans present to "make some noise for my baby mama right there" (Kim Kardashian), before singing a song that contained the words "now you having my baby." Baby? What baby? Like a Céline cross-body bag or a tiny human being? Kim's sister Kourtney tweeted, "Been wanting to shout from the rooftops with joy and now I can! Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!" Khloe wrote, "Keeping secrets is hard with so many family members! Especially when you are so freaking excited!!!!! LOVE is everything!!!!" And Kris Jenner posted, "Im a happy girl !!!!!!!!! Wowza!" So it seems it is a child! This also might explain why Mr. West dressed up as a crystal-encrusted sperm two evenings earlier.

Why Every Girl Should Own a Romper or Jumpsuit

What do Alexa Chung, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Moss have in common? The label "style star" is an understatement on their resumes. These women set trends like no one's business. They also share one other thing: embracing jumpsuits and rompers on red carpets and in their personal street style. It was back in 2010 when this trend first started to make the scene, and recently it's cropped back up in a big way. It's our job to let you know the cycle of fashion, and when one piece has a recurring go-round, we pay attention. Of course, its frequency isn't the only thing that recommends this easy piece. Rompers and Jumpsuits are extremely versatile. Not only can they work for day with a blazer and a belt, they can be jazzed up for night with tights, heels and statement jewelry. Because they don't require separates coordination, they'll do in a pinch when you're short on time, too. Take a look at some of our favorite "onesies" available right now, as well as our dos and don'ts tips.

  • Tickled Purple

So many jumpsuits, so little time. How do you choose? By elimination, of course. Prints are tricky and can be too girly. This purple adds color, without being too much. Remember, a jumpsuit can be a whole lotta look if it's not done well.

    $795 at Net-a-Porter.

    Tickled Purple
  • Mesh and Sexy

We love trends as much as the next gal, but we also like to keep it classy, which is why we included this suit. It's a do that's so close to being a don't. What saves it? The solid black color. If this were army green, the military reference would make it look like a costume, not an outfit.

    $78 at Nasty Gal.

    Mesh and Sexy
  • Cold Shoulder

We've been pushing winter white pretty hard. It's chic and irreverent at the same time. We highly recommend this structured one shoulder cream number. Any number of belts and jackets will work on top. It's literally a blank canvas for your styling talents.

    $26.39 at ASOS.

    Cold Shoulder
  • Red Hot

It takes a brave girl to wear heart-stopping red in a jumpsuit. But as you can see, it can be done in a simple way that's upscale and sophisticated. Note the wide legs. They have movement like a skirt, a plus. Just be careful to keep your waist defined. There are so many slouchy jumpsuits on the market that look, well, sloppy. Keep it to one loose-fitting area only.

    $690 at Neiman Marcus.

    Red Hot
  • The New Neutral

Rompers allow you to play with being daring, without showing too much. Take for example this number with the short-shorts. Pull on a pair of tights underneath and you're showing off your shapely gams while leaving enough to the imagination.

    $198 at Singer22.

    The New Neutral
  • Cool Teal

This cut is an ode to 1940s chic. It skims your shape and defines without being constricting, which we love! This is the perfect simple romper to wear for day and then transform for night.

    $49.25 at ASOS.

    Cool Teal
  • Jacquard Pretty

The woven pattern and mix of navy and black is upscale and chic — who said rompers couldn't be? Not us. We can picture this with the perfect little tuxedo jacket over top, paired with class black suede pumps.

    $96 at Nordstrom.

Andrej Pejic lands his first Elle cover

We've been keenly charting the meteoric rise of the fashion world's pre-eminent gender-bending model, Andrej Pejic, since he started sneaking womenswear jobs out from under the noses of countless boring old female models.

And as we usher in a new year, Pejic has notched up yet another broken boundary for his CV by becoming the first cross-dressing male model to grace an Elle magazine cover.

IN PICTURES: Andrej Pejic, cross-dressing supermodel

Wearing top-to-toe Jean Paul Gaultier - for whom Pejic has variously performed muse, couture bride and campaign star duties over the past few years - the Elle in question is that of his birth nation, Serbia (Pejic fled to Australia as a political refugee when he was eight following the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia). By all accounts, Gaultier even personally sent the clothes to the shoot after hearing about the groundbreaking January cover. And doesn't he/she look marvelous?

SEE: January 2013's best magazine covers

Inside the issue, Pejic demonstrates his versatility thanks to some clever camera-work, posing in saucy lingerie wrestling with a Thin White Duke-alike male model. Yes, you guessed it - that's Pejic too.

9 New Year's Resolutions Every Girl Should Make

Forget empty promises to lose weight, we cut through all the regular New Year’s b.s. to bring you 9 real resolutions that could flip your life upside down (for the better, of course).

So you wanna become the first female president? Or perhaps earn a million dollars by the time you turn 30? Instead of joking around, talking about lofty career goals, start asking yourself what steps you need to take to actually achieve them. Then go out there, and just do it! The sky’s the limit.

In between your busy work schedule and catering to the needs of all your friends and family, find some time to do something nice for yourself. Hit the spa for a Swedish massage, get a monthly mani/pedi or simply enjoy a blowout at the salon. You deserve it, so stop thinking otherwise.

Seriously, there are plenty of fish in the sea. Get rid of the guys who treat you like crap, and learn your own self-worth. Once you do that, you’ll naturally attract real men who are willing and able to give you the love and respect you’re owed.

Life’s too short to waste it being unhappy! Switch up your attitude, pick up a brand new hobby, purge yourself of bad friends who ultimately bring you down and surround yourself with new ones who offer tons of support and positivity.

Whether it’s jumping out of a plane or telling a total stranger hello, the best way to overcome your fears is by facing them head on. Only then will you truly realize what you’re capable of (and trust us, it’s a whole heck of a lot more than you previously thought).

Self-education is the best education. Even if you’re not in school anymore, vow to continue to teach yourself via books, travel, and trial and error. Engage in conversations with people you wouldn’t typically talk to. Knowledge is power. Use it to help yourself and to help others.

How many times have you opened your mouth and uttered some harsh words in the heat of the moment? Or maybe you’ve offended a stranger with your careless language and weren’t even aware. Think before you speak, because what you say does matter.

Tell your BFF how gorgeous she looks in that new dress. Praise your mom often on her home cooking. Compliment the girl in line in front of you on her chic haircut. You never know the type of impact you’ll have on that person’s day, plus you’ll feel all warm and tingly inside too.

We all need to get away and re-charge, so what better way to kick off the New Year than by planning a vacation with your significant other, best friends from high school, or your family? Now, that’s one resolution we’re sure you can keep!

These 13 models, actresses, and musicians join style blog mainstays like Alexa Chung, Diane Kruger, Kristen Stewart, et al in the pantheon of It Girls.

  • Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne officially arrived when she earned the Model of the Year award at the British Fashion Awards (she accepted in a metallic lime green Burberry dress). • Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence became a critical darling when she starred in Winter’s Bone, but earned mass approval in this year’s box office hit Hunger Games. • Solange Knowles

It’s official, Solange Knowles has stepped out of her sister Beyonce's spotlight. The singer, DJ, and stylista was a constant presence at NYFW—including her head-turning street style in this multi-patterned Diane Von Furstenberg suit. Knowles is known for her fearless fashion sense, rocking gutsy look-at-me pieces with bold colors like the Boxing Kitten romper she wore to the listening party for her album True.

  • Rita Ora

Already being hailed as “the new Rihanna,” Rita Ora made a splash this year with big name collaborations and even bigger red carpet style. The popstar looked uber-cool in an 80s-inspired Vivienne Westwood Red Label suit at LWF, and red-hot in Alexander Vauthier at the EMAs where she performed her single RIP.

  • Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez probably has ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber to thank for her skyrocket to household name this year, but she proved that she’s got star power of her own when she started hitting the red carpet in more grown-up and fashion-forward ensembles, like the Dolce & Gabbana crop top and skirt she wore to the Kids Choice Awards, and the frothy Marchesa gown she wore to a screening of Spring Breakers at the Tortonto International Film Festival.

  • Grimes

With a name that certainly gets your attention, Grimes came onto the scene this year as the indie rocker sporting the most cool-girl cred since Florence Welch became a household name and the best bangs since... ever. Though she doesn't spend a lot of time on the red carpet, this hard-to-pin-down girl has a signature taste in fashion to go with her signature musical style. Performing at festivals like SXSW and Pitchfork, she looked hipper-than-hip in wayfarers, grungy flannels and punky boots.

  • Allison Williams

Allison Williams might be the It Girl who made the biggest impression this year. Going from virtual obscurity at the beginning of the year to designer darling at NYFW, the classic beauty has earned countless style profiles and “one-to-watch” titles. We’ve already been watching—and in terms of her just-risky-enough red carpet choices like the emerald green Oscar de la Renta gown at the Emmys and neon lace Valentino dress at the Gotham Independent Film Awards—we like what we see.

    Allison Williams
  • Elle Fanning

This year Elle Fanning graduated from kiddy flicks to more serious parts such as her role in the drama Ginger and Rosa, but we’re paying more attention to what she’s doing on the red carpet than onscreen anyway. At only 14, she’s the youngest on our It Girl list, but undoubtedly has the best curfew of any tween around—she somehow makes an appearance at a premiere a week, and does it in looks that block out the competition from much more established stylistas. The best part is that she almost always manages to look age-appropriate, even in her gorgeous Rochas gown and cardigan at a screening at the British Film Institute or her daisy-covered Rodarte dress at the Critic’s Choice Movie Awards.

  • Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara grabbed the fashion world’s attention when she hit the red carpet at the end of 2011 to promote The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Her blunt bangs, ivory skin, and gothic or uniquely structured fashion choices—like the Givenchy Couture gown she wore to the Oscars or the sheer black Calvin Klein number she wore at the Dubai International Film Festival—made her stand out from the sea of sunny colorblock looks this year. Though she’s been a bit M.I.A. in the second half of the year, we can’t wait to see what she has in store for the sequels.

  • Lana Del Rey

Whether you were floored or freaked out, you probably at least talked about Lana Del Rey’s SNL performance at the beginning of the year. Since then, her album Born to Die blew up and paparazzi began snapping pics of her signature Old Hollywood bombshell style at festival performances in the U.S. and across Europe. If you didn’t see her H&M ad campaign, you were living under a rock.

  • Jessica Chastain

Newcomer to the spotlight Jessica Chastain made everyone want red hair this year. Her performances in talked about films like Tree of Life and The Help meant that we saw a lot of her on the red carpet, wearing elegant pieces like the delicate Elie Saab dress she wore to the CFDA Fashion Awards and the electric blue Prabal Gurung dress she wore to the premiere of Zero Dark Thirty. Her classic beauty didn’t catch just our eyes, but also the attention of Yves Saint Laurent, who made her a brand ambassador.

  • Cody Horn

Cody Horn’s breakout role came this year in Magic Mike, but we were even more excited about what she was doing on the red carpet. This girl has a killer figure and shows it off in sleek but tough numbers like the sporty white halter dress by Cushnie Et Ochs that she wore to the ESPY Awards, and the leather-and-lace Jason Wu mini she rocked at the End of Watch premiere. Though this total newcomer's Wikipedia page currently has about five lines about her, we know there’s a lot in store for this actress.

  • Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence became a critical darling when she starred in Winter’s Bone, but earned mass approval in this year’s box office hit Hunger Games. She appeared in versatile looks on the red carpet, from a moody blue Christian Dior skater dress and dark locks at the Toronto International Film Festival, to a glowing Ralph Lauren gown and golden hair at the Hunger Games premiere.

The best part is that she almost always manages to look age-appropriate, even in her gorgeous Rochas gown and cardigan at a screening at the British Film Institute or her daisy-covered Rodarte dress at the Critic’s Choice Movie Awards.
