Her new fragrance and garlic; Katy Perry on her favourite smells

Royal Revolution, which launches on July 23, is Katy Perry's second fragrance for Coty. And according to its marketers, Perry has put as much energy into her latest perfume as she does into her music.

Going through what she describes as a rebellious beauty stage, Perry's new Royal Revolution "invites you to be yourself". How? With a blend of pomegranate, pink freesia, jasmine, orange flower, vanilla, sandalwood and Perry's own personal favourite - blackthorn, which she added as a "curve ball. It was used in the dark ages as they thought it held power, so they used it in their spells," she tells us at her London press call. "We didn't want it to smell like grandmothers or bathroom sprays."

She's right, it doesn't, but then again the girl does have a nose for what smells good. Her other favourite aromas include garlic; an open wood fire; baby powder; the way the Park Hyatt in Paris smells; vanilla because it makes her happy and the smell of falling in love; "you know, that smell when you're lying under that person you love and they breathe on you," she says. Hmmm no we don't, but each to their own brand of scent.

Perry's fragrance shouldn't have too much trouble shifting; she is of course a modern beauty icon - although she names Gwen Stefani, Chloe Sevigny, Liz Taylor and Daphne Guinness as her own. The 29-year-old makes waves every time she colours her hair (which by the way she's planning a few more times before she hits the big 3-0), and each time she strikes a new beauty pose when performing the world takes beauty note.

Her favourite look? That purple-haired reign on the red carpet moment at the ASCAP awards back in 2012; "some of the other looks? I don't know," she tells us screwing up her face.

Perry's biggest beauty vices right now (apart from the hand cream and Oribe hair spray she's never without) however are inner confidence ("I love beauty, but without inner confidence you just start to look a bit clown like," she says) and knowledge. Where other celebrities use their star status for hot tickets to clubs and parties, Perry uses hers for private viewings at museums, galleries and exhibitions; "knowledge is your best weapon," she tells us, perhaps with a little spritz of her new riotous scent.

The Horrors! Harpers Bazaar Gave Kate Upton a Skinnier Armpit

As she does in her free time, Kate Upton stomped about a man-made body of water in a swimsuit and high heels and dry hair. She thrust her hips, jutted her calves, pointed her elbows, lurched her chest, and stomped, stomped, stomped all around this empty pool. Everything about it was just the most natural and casual and usual thing to do.

And the CFDAs Instagrammer of the Year Is ...

After the CFDA announced earlier this month that they would begin honoring the "Instagrammer of the Year," a winner has been selected, after receiving over 100,000 "likes" from the public in the contest. His name is Patrick Janelle, or @aguynamedpatrick, if you follow him on Instagram, where he posts an array of debonair outfit pics, travel shots, and food photos (yes, there's latte art and avocado toast). He also collaborated with fellow CFDA nominee Thom Browne on a series of shots over the course of the past ten days.

Lessons from the stylish: Jasmine Hemsley, 30, chef

"I can tell when I'm needing a steak," says Jasmine Hemsley. "And when I need a steak, I just need the fat. I have to have a rib-eye - lean meat doesn't do anything for me." I know what you're thinking. This girl looks like she hasn't encountered a piece of fat since 1997. But that's the great thing about Hemsley's cooking methods: fat isn't off the menu - it's positively encouraged.

Jasmine set up her business, Hemsley + Hemsley, with her 28-year-old, equally gorgeous sister Melissa in 2010. They make and deliver healthy, hearty meals to clients (read: pop stars on tour, actors on a health kick), all adjusted to their personal requirements. Their focus is on organic, nutrient-dense ingredients - lamb chops with tangy watercress salsa verde, or chestnut pancakes with orange blossom coconut yogurt. Recipes on their website are photographed in delicious detail. Next month, their cookbook will no doubt cement the notion that buckwheat is sexy.

READ: Nut milk, an It-blender and a recipe for Vogue's new Nigellas

Their biggest challenge, however, is to shift perceptions about fat. "We've always been taught to have low-fat things, but often low-fat equals added sugar and added chemicals," Hemsley tells me over mint tea and a Paradise bar - a chocolate-covered square of desiccated coconut she has made for me to try. "People think that butter, bone marrow, the skin on the chicken, is bad for you, but that's the real stuff. It's only when you eat butter with artificial, over-processed refined breads, for instance, that you can't stop."

The daughters of a Filipino mother and an English Army officer father, Jasmine and Melissa were always taught that eating was the remedy for everything. "The famous Filipino phrase is 'Did you eat yet?'" says Hemsley. "Even if you've just eaten, you eat more. If you have a headache, a cold, you're tired - eat something." In small-town America, say, this mentality would likely have engendered obesity. In Surbiton, where the sisters grew up, it merely had the effect of converting Jasmine into a swimwear model.

"Until a year ago, I had been modelling since I was 19," says Hemsley, who has featured in campaigns for Marks & Spencer, Olay and The Body Shop, and appeared in commercials for Mercedes. "I spent most of my time thinking, 'I've really got to get a proper job.' Somehow, 10 years went by."

Jasmine loves: Pop jeans, £190, Acne, matchesfashion.com ; RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek, £28; beingcontent.com ; Kure Bazaar polish in Stiletto, £14.95; s elfridges.com

It was modelling that got her thinking about diet. "I was doing lots of lingerie shoots and I could really feel the difference between foods that made me bloated and others that didn't. It's a horrid feeling, having to suck your stomach in." I make a blithe remark about eating disorders, and she rejoins: "You'll meet every kind of eating idea from full-blown disorders to people totally ahead of the curve. Modelling is quite a holistic game; everyone's quite well read." In short: if you want to look like the girl next door, you've got to eat healthily.

In 2010, after copious amounts of reading - she mentions Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon - Jasmine began offering cooking lessons to friends. Word of mouth secured her first Hollywood client, a high-profile male actor whom she refuses to name. "I went to his house and cooked all his food for a week," she recalls. "The recipes were based on bone broth. I started by making vegetable and chicken soups and then introducing more raw food. It helps improve digestion, so you lose weight as a result." The actor gave a stellar endorsement, more clients followed. After roping in her sister and boyfriend of 11 years, Nick Hopper, a photographer and model, she quit modelling, set up a blog, and scored a food column in British Vogue.

It undoubtedly helps that the Hemsleys have the looks, and the wardrobe, to go with the mantras. Jasmine describes herself as a shopaholic in remission. As a model she was unable to resist the lure of a sample sale. "There's a lot of hanging around between castings, so I was always popping into H&M or a sale and buying something that didn't quite fit which I never wore."

Today she's wearing a typical outfit of Proenza Schouler flats, Rag & Bone skinny jeans and a Sonia Rykiel sweater, pilfered from her neighbour and best friend, Emma. "I don't have the time to shop now," Hemsley says, looking sheepish, "so I borrow clothes from Emma. Every now and again she gives me a bag of second-hand bits. She's moving house soon and I am going to be so bereft." She adores coats - "my favourite is an asymmetric navy-blue mac from Preen that cost a fortune" - and knitwear. "Last weekend I picked up a Lurex sweater at a car boot sale for £3 and I've been wearing it non-stop," she grins.

Swapping commercials for kitchens has given her greater freedom with her look. "The first thing I did when I left modelling was to cut my hair and paint my nails. Before, I always had to look the same." She's become an expert on organic beauty products, regularly popping in to Content Beauty, a shop in Marylebone, to pick up treats. "I used to spend money on a lipstick, wear it for two days, then never wear it again. Organic products are more expensive but I am more mindful now. I save lots of money using coconut and sesame oil on my body, the same stuff I would eat."

Back on the subject of food, I ask what would constitute a blowout meal. She looks stricken. "A burger? A steak? Definitely not pizza …" A week later she calls and leaves a rambling voicemail message. "I was thinking about your question, and I think it would have to be chips," she says, before launching into a description of how exactly they should be cooked. "In beef fat rather than refined vegetable oil. Delicious."

The Art of Eating Well by Jasmine and Melissa Hemsley is out on June 19 (Ebury Press, RRP £25). To order from Telegraph Books at £23 + £1.35 p&p, call 0844 871 1514 or visit books.telegraph.co.uk

Questions & Answers

How can you choose healthily when eating out for dinner?
Fill up on vegetables. At restaurants, always ask for a vegetable side where you can and don't be afraid to swap things in and out of your order to maximise on veg and cut down on refined carbs.

Your favourite organic beauty products?
I love RMS cheek pots and nail polish from Kure Bazaar. They're all chemical‑free, in beautiful colours, and they don't smell.

A simple way to update a tired wardrobe?
My neighbour told me she was sick of seeing me in skinny jeans, so I went to Liberty and bought some Acne Pop jeans. They're a looser cut and look great with heels - plus, they're not too constricting. I like to feel I can move or be active.

How do you fit exercise into your schedule?
YouTube is a saviour. I do yoga videos with American yoga gurus Tara Stiles and Sadie Nardini. I used to go on long runs and do aerobics. Now I just do yoga and I'm more toned and stable than I've ever felt.

You love body oil. How is it made?
For 100ml of body oil, I pour roughly 40 per cent sesame oil, 40 per cent sweet almond oil and 20 per cent jojoba oil from my local health-food shop into a pump-top bottle and then add 25 to 30 drops of essential oil. I use lavender and mandarin essential oils to make a night-time oil and rosemary and eucalyptus for a refreshing morning one. I apply after a shower when my skin is only patted dry and still has a few water droplets on to help spread it.

Non-Snooty, Non-Touristy Paris: A Brief Tour

Okay, on s'excuse: As some readers, both French and American, have noted, we've occasionally erred in this monthlong blog in covering the fancier — or at the very least, the bobo — sides of the French capital. (And in doing so, we may have inadvertently reflected the growing pains of a city and a country that, as the European elections there last week indicate, is still struggling to fully embrace and absorb the incredible cultural diversity it has amassed in recent decades, becoming home to countless emigrants from North Africa, the Middle East, West Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere.)

Truth is, many would argue, the best Paris, the real Paris, the vital and forward-looking Paris, is the Paris that lies beyond the tourist-y, luxury-branded realms of the Rue Saint-Honoré and the Marais.

Giambattista Valli to launch second ready-to-wear line, Giamba

Giambattista Valli is readying himself to launch a second ready-to-wear line, named Giamba, after the nickname given to him by his closest friends.

The line is not a diffusion of secondary line, but another ready-to-wear collection that will sit alongside and complement his main `line, Giambattista Valli Paris

"Although still sharing the timeless, ageless and effortless spirit that is the hallmark of the Giambattista Valli Paris collections, with Giamba the designer will express a different yet complementary philosophy, stemming from the need to develop another aspect of his personality," reads the statement announcing the addition.

IN PICTURES: The best of Giambattista Valli

Valli will produce two seasonal collections in addition to two pre-collections for Giamba each year. The seasonal collections will be shown at Milan Fashion Week, debuting in September this year, while his mainline and couture collections will continue to show in Paris.

"There is also a playful, underground and sexy side in me and in my designs that you will see in the Giamba line," Valli told WWD. "I've been thinking about it for a while and waited for the right time, and now it's matured. I am really very happy."

Italian-born, Central Saint Martins-trained Valli launched his eponymous brand in 2005, adding Haute Couture in 2011.

Red carpet beauty!

Elle Fanning seems to be taking her role as a young Sleeping Beauty (aka Princess Aurora) in Maleficent to heart. The blonde actress, 16, channeled the iconic cartoon Disney princess for the Los Angeles premiere on May 28.

The powder blue Elie Saab Couture gown featured dropped shoulders and a belted waist. The full-length skirt was slightly transparent allowing the embroidered petals to stand out.

"It's really intense," Fanning told Us Weekly of the premiere on the red carpet. "I probably have never experienced anything like this. I'm still sweating and people are screaming."

The younger sister to Dakota Fanning has been dressing in theme for her worldwide promotional appearances for the live-action fairy tale fantasy movie. In London on May 7, Fanning wore another princess style gown with the yellow Georges Hobeika Couture gown. Then on May 9 for a photocall in London, she went more casual in a white two-piece ensemble with a ruffled skirt.

Au Revoir, New York! & So Ends Paris in 30 Days

Tonight we bid farewell to our monthlong look at all things Paris — and what a month it's been! We set out to uncover more about why our two cities have such a fascination with each other, and along the way we learned just how much French you need to get by in Paris, and the beauty secrets of some of the city's most stylish Parisiennes. We found out where to get the best facial, oysters, and affordable on-trend accessories. We discovered NORMA is the next chic neighborhood, and the best hotel in which to have an affair. We're still on the fence about whether the French are, in fact, better at sex, but we will give them their due when it comes to lymphatic drainage massage and lingerie. Merci beaucoup to all who read, commented, enjoyed our work, or linked to us from the far reaches of the internet. That's all for now — we're off en vacances (well, actually, just back to our regular jobs), so to borrow the words of another media grande dame who made a graceful exit this month, we won't say good-bye, but instead à bientôt.

Princess Charlene Of Monaco And Prince Albert Are Expecting Their First Child

[Getty]

There is another royal baby on the way, as Princess Charlene Of Monaco and Prince Albert announced in a statement today that they are expecting their first child together. A statement from the palace reads: 'Prince Albert and Princess Charlene have the immense joy to announce they are expecting a happy event. The birth is due at the end of the year.'

Prince Albert II has been Monaco's ruler since 2005 and heir child will be first in line to the throne of Monaco. A year ago 36-year-old Charlene spoke about her desire to start a family, as she said to Sunday World newspaper: "Now I'm settled and I think kids will come. I don't put any pressure on myself. If it happens, it happens."

In another interview with HOLA! she revealed that her husband is her biggest support as she said: "My husband is my biggest support, the person that I confide in and who knows me best."

[Getty]

One thing is for sure Charlene, the former Olympic swimmer from South Africa, will have a seriously chic maternity wardrobe. The princess is a fixture at Paris Fashion Week and darling of designers such as Giorgio Armani who designed her couture wedding dress. Her wardrobe is filled with the likes of Ralph Lauren and Christian Dior, so we don't imagine she'll tone down the luxe when it comes to her maternity wardrobe.

We predict this will be the most hype about maternity style since, well, the last royal bump - our very own Duchess of Cambridge.

Check Out Peter Jensen's Yoko Ono Inspired Resort Show

Following in the footsteps of Sissy Spacek, Cindy Sherman, his great aunt Jytte and most recently Diana Ross – Yoko Ono is the latest in the line of headstrong women that have inspired the collections of Danish designer Peter Jensen. Known for his light-hearted and playful take on fashion, London based Jensen has designed tie-ins for the likes of Topshop, Cheap Monday and Fred Perry as well as collaborating with a whole host of creatives, including photographer Tim Walker and illustrator Julie Verhoeven for his namesake brand.

Left: The Yoko Ono Inspired Lookbook Shoot, Right: Designer Peter Jensen

With a glittering fan-base including Kanye West, Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhall, Nicole Kidman and Lindsay Lohan, Jensen has also been enjoying the spotlight thanks to Lena Dunham of Girls fame, who often posts selfies on Instagram wearing his cute designs. She was introduced to the brand when her mum – the renowned artist and photographer Laurie Simmons – provided the inspiration for Jensen's Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

Peter Jensen's Apple Prints

Another addition to the Resort calendar, Jensen presented his line in an installation format. Journalists present then witnessed the collection being photographed en tableaux with a troupe of twenty-something Yoko Ono doubles modelling the looks. The clothes themselves featured a sixties silhouette reflecting Yoko's era as a darling of the New York avant-garde art scene. This was also the period that she met John Lennon and subsequently became best known for 'breaking up' the most famous band in the world. Now seen as the godmother of conceptual art, it's the humour implicit in her oeuvre, he explained that most appealed to him and inspired the collection.

Left: Peter Jensen's Resort 2015 Moodboard, Right: Signature Rabbit Printed Shoes

Jensen's narrative starts from the fabled moment when John Lennon walked into the Indica gallery in London and took a bite of out of one of Yoko's artworks – an apple on a plinth – which cost £200. Green apple prints are dotted across the collection making a sweet addition, as are abstract Yoko-face motifs, which are featured in cotton voile shirts and dresses. Of course Jensen's ever-popular, signature rabbit logo also makes an appearance, this time cropping up on mini skirts and clumpy court shoes. Yoko’s own style is noted with shift dresses, high waisted shorts and wide leg trousers present and there's also a reference to her ‘Ono’s Cut Piece’ work of 1964 with slashes introduced into garments.

Suki Waterhouse cast in Insurgent

Burberry model Suki Waterhouse has scored a role in the sequel of a Hollywood blockbuster.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the 22-year-old Londoner will star alongside Shailene Woodley and Theo James in Insurgent, the sequel to the recently released sci-fi film Divergent.

The role will be Waterhouse's first of a sci-fi nature; she is set to star in forthcoming British rom-com Love, Rosie, and had a brief role alongside Agyness Deyn in indie film Pusher.

Etsy Vintage Hunting: Fringe Benefits

More often than not, runway trends that seem brand-new actually have storied pasts, and many of their original inspirations can be found on Etsy. In this weekly feature, we'll take a trend that's been bubbling up on the runway or in the culture at large, and track down its roots via this internet trove of vintage goodness. Not only will you get a lesson in fashion history, you might actually be able to get your hands on original versions of pieces at much cheaper prices.

Evidently, fringe is a trend with legs: For spring, we saw it on Altuzarra's exquisite leather dress (above left). Then Oscar de la Renta (above right), Alexander Wang, and Chanel made it a centerpiece of their pre-fall lineups. While the search for vintage fringe pieces can mean a hunt through a hippie-dippy rabbit hole, we rounded up some pieces that reflect the new, understated take on the trend. Click through the slideshow for our selection.

Angelina Jolie Says Maddox Is in a Transcontinental Relationship

Best Bet: Kevyn Aucoin Creamy Glow Duo

Taylor Swift has mastered girl-on-girl crime activism, cat-eyes, and denouncing men in verse. But she's also made a good case for post-workout prettiness. Her recent paparazzi photos have all been taken post-sweat, where she demonstrates only the slightest post-workout flush. To re-create the same look minus the sweat, I like Kevyn Aucoin's Creamy Glow. A split compact with blush and highlighter, with complementing undertones of beige, it gives you sheer, buildable glow that slightly enhances and defines your cheekbones. Although you're technically supposed to eschew cream textures as the weather warms up, I like dotting a mix of the two shades onto the apples of my cheeks with a Beauty Blender to make the flush look really organic and seamless.

GIRLBOSS, the most motivational fashion book to read this year

It's hard to summarise Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso's #GIRLBOSS; part-biography and part self-empowerment manual, at the beginning she writes what it clearly isn't: "This book will not teach you how to get rich quick, break into the fashion industry, or start a business. It is neither a feminist manifesto or a memoir."

What the book is filled with is a mix of candid anecdotes, some that Amoruso is less than proud of - such as when she regularly shoplifted, to unapologetic tales of the time a team member purchased eye-wateringly expensive office chairs, which she then tasked someone with selling on Craiglist, the US equivalent of Gumtree.

If you're not familiar with Amoruso, then she can be best described as the accidental founder and CEO of a $100 million-plus fashion e-tailer which employs around 350 staff in its cool Los Angeles head office. Oh, and that she only just turned 30.

#GIRLBOSS isn't full of annoying hashtags as the title might suggest. Far from it - instead, it is Amoruso's tale of how she transitioned from a part-time vintage seller on eBay to becoming the head of one of the fastest-growing companies in the United States. What's endearing about the San Francisco-raised character is how she's been forced to adapt to her new-found 'fame' as, afterall, she admits to starting an eBay business so that she wouldn't have to talk to members of the public.

While Amoruso's rise to the top of the fashion food chain might have been an accidental one, her work ethic and attention to detail is something readers from all walks of life can take heed from. She is considered and hard-working. What's also appealing is the fact that she considers herself as a sort of 'fashion outsider' - so there's no endless chapters on who she networked with while at Fashion Week, or name-dropping about many millions she's frittered away in shops on Rodeo Drive. One chapter is aptly entitled 'Money looks better in the bank than on your feet' - a motto I felt compelled to #share on Instagram.

Amoruso built Nasty Gal, which now ships to over 60 countries, without any outside funding and connected closely to her community of thrift-loving shoppers. The book is interspersed with passionate accounts from successful bloggers such as Leandra Medine, as well as fashion editors and her own staff who discuss how being a female leader affects them.

So get a cosy spot, pay attention to Sophia's commandments and you'll feel compelled to turn that business idea into something closer to a reality.

#GIRLBOSS is released on May 29, 2014 and is published by Penguin

Je Kiffe French! How to Become Almost Fluent

Earlier this month, we looked at just how much French you really need to get by in Paris as an expat (answer: not all that much, particularly if you’re ScarJo) and provided a controversial guide to how best to fake it.

But what if you really do want to learn the language of your new adopted city, whether you’re a New Yorker in for the long haul in Paris, or a Parisian opening a fromagerie in Brooklyn?

Charlize Theron Smolders and Strips Down For Esquire UK: "It's Nice to Be Not Single"

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron, unfiltered. The gorgeous Oscar-winning actress stripped down for the July 2014 issue of Esquire U.K., and dished on her relationships -- new (hello Sean Penn!) and old. "It was nice to be single and now it's nice to be not single," Theron, 38, told the mag.

In images shot by celeb photographer Terry Richardson, the South African-born beauty looks scorching hot on the cover wearing a skintight one-piece featuring a white top and itty bitty black booty shorts with sheer panels. "Life is really good," the Million Ways to Die in the West star said.

"I'm sure some people would be like, 'I would never want to have that life,'" Theron explained of her unmarried status. "That's not necessarily what a lot of women want." The star, instead, has spent the last few years focusing on her son Jackson, 2, and now, a burgeoning romance with Penn.

"I'm just saying, a life is good if it's the life that you want," she dished. "I am living my life in a way that if tomorrow it ended -- and I hope not because I have a kid -- but if it did, this was the life that I really wanted to live," she said. "But I work at that, you know?"

Indeed, Theron's life has changed dramatically since she adopted Jackson in March 2012. "I was like, "Ah, finally!'" she recalled of meeting her son. When Jackson was just three months old, Theron took him to live in Namibia for a year as she made the film, Mad Max: Fury Road.

"When I originally said yes to the movie, I had just split up from my relationship [with longtime beau Stuart Townsend]," she said. "So, there was a part of me that thought, 'This is what you need to do, you need to go and sit in a desert. I'm going to go to Australia and have a walkabout," she added of the film, which was shot in Africa and Australia. "I'm going to find myself. I was excited about it."

The actress cited timing as one reason for the split. "In his defense," she said of the Irish actor, "it was not that he didn't want to have children, it was just something that never worked out." Timing -- and fate -- have ultimately lead the star to her current man.

"I wasn't in any place that I even wanted something like [a relationship]," she reflected of her sudden romance with Penn.

"Then one day you go: Oh, [Jackson's] almost two now, and he has his little activities that he goes to and he's got a bedtime now, and you have more time again. And it's like if you are open to something, if you just let it happen, it will happen. When you least expect it."

8 Resort 2014 Trends You Need To Know From The New Tracksuit To Scarf Dresses

Despite being a few years old, it’s still relatively tricksy to get one’s head around the idea of Resort collections. First of all there’s the naming: is it Cruise or Resort? Bring it up with the fashion gods, people, there’s no definitive decision. But what we do know is that these lines are the lovely new clothes and accessories that drop into stores from November. We’re barely into bikinis and yet Pre-Fall (that other in-between season) is starting to hit rails in preparation for the forthcoming A/W’13 ranges. So when the Resort/Cruise presentations come along as the same time, it can fluff up even the most ferociously ahead-of-the-curve wardrobes. Head exploding? Calm down and look at the bright side – checking out this newness means even MORE super-trends for us to lust after or try to tap into now. We’re not complaining, but our wallets may be.

(May 29, 2014 – London) Roland Mouret showcases the Resort 2015 collection in London on May 29 2014, at his flagship home at 8 Carlos Place.

More than ever Resort (and Pre-Fall) collections are generating big bucks - buyers can spend up to 80 per cent of their entire budgets for the year on them, and the pieces stay in stores long before hitting the sales racks. It’s no great surprise that uber-houses like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior are ploughing effort and money into making a splash, staging high profile shows and offering more looks than ever before.

So with all that in mind, let’s get down to the trends. Only a handful of brands have revealed their Resort lines thus far, but we’re a few headline looks are already appearing. There’s an emphasis on A-line – whether micro mini, flaring out around the ankles or into the skinny-boot trouser silhouette Nicolas Ghesquiere aced at Balenciaga and has now rebooted for Louis Vuitton. You’ll find a lot of ultra-luxe leatherwork, a new take on trackies and much more. Just scroll through the gallery above and start saving some pennies…

Snooki Tries on Wedding Dresses Ahead of Jionni LaValle Nuptials: See a Picture of the Pregnant Bride-to-Be

Snooki

Say yes to the dress! With her wedding to fiance Jionni LaValle and the birth of the couple's second child mere months away, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi is in full-on planning mode. One of the items on her to-do list? Picking out a wedding dress!

On Thursday, May 29, the pregnant Jersey Shore alum, 26, took to her blog to share a photo of herself trying on gowns for her big day. The picture shows the reformed party girl in a vintage-y lace number with a low back and strings of pearls draped across her shoulder blades.

"This is NOT [the] dress, but something like it," the second-time mom-to-be wrote under the selfie. "How gorgeous is this dress? I loved it but needed more of an UMPH. I'm too short for an elegant mermaid dress, but I loved how vintage and classy this was. Can't wait for the big day to show you all the dress I did pick out!!! Xoxoxo"

As previously reported, the Snooki & JWoww star plans to say "I do" to her fiance of two years this fall -- around the time she's expecting her second child, a baby girl. (She and LaValle, 26, are already parents to son Lorenzo, 20 months.)

"I can clarify that our wedding is still on, and we are madly in love with each other," she gushed to Us Weekly back in April, when she first revealed her second pregnancy. "We've waited long enough and cannot wait." She added later in a blog post: "Jionni and I are VERY happy together. He's my best friend and I'm his...The wedding is still on as scheduled and it will take an apocalypse to change that."

Hotel towelling hoodies (embroidered with the imaginary Paradise Hotel palm tree logo), towel-wrap dresses and light-up backpacks follow-on from many highly coveted and tongue-in-cheek lines for Topshop (remember the ‘Piste Off’ and ‘Chalet Come Home With You?’ hoodies from the partnership last winter?). And the new tie-in - themed on celebrity holiday selfies - is certainly Instagram-worthy. We cannot resist the Springbreakers style LED light-up Buffalo trainers and slip-ons and nor can Rita Ora and Katy Perry; both of whom (in a rather perfect case of life imitating art) posted pictures of theirs last week:

Emily Blunt Stuns at Premieres in Three Different Cities All in One Day!

Emily Blunt looks amazing at the Edge of Tomorrow premiere.

Okay, now this is almost like magic.

Emily Blunt looked like perfection at the multi-stop premiere of Edge Of Tomorrow—in three different dresses, in three different cities, and all in one day on Wednesday, May 28.

The actress, who stars in the science fiction flick alongside Tom Cruise, first stunned in an Osman design at the London premiere. Wearing the dress—strapless with a pink, blue and red paisely-print—Blunt looked comfortable as she posed on the carpet with her hands in the dress pockets.

John Krasinski's wife and Cruise then took off to Paris, where she slipped into a sexier black number. With her hair in a chignon, and more dramatic makeup, Blunt looked gorgeous in David Koma. The part-sheer, part-leather two-piece look featured a cropped, netted high-neck top and leather pencil skirt with velvet flocking detailing. The 31-year-old paired the look with classic, simple Christian Louboutin peep-toes.

The Brit, who gave birth to daughter Hazel just three months ago, then flew to New York City with the cast, and even after two flights, the actress looked surprisingly refreshed.

For her final look, Blunt opted for head-to-toe Prada. She donned a strapless red gown with sleek contoured seams and a peaked neckline. She added Lorraine Schwartz jewels and a pink Prada clutch.

Held at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square, Blunt told Us Weekly that, to train for the role, she "did everything" from "martial arts, gymnastics, weight training, [and] sprint training."

Blunt also revealed that she hadn't seen the film yet! "I'm going to see the movie for the first time. I haven't seen it finished—I've seen it nearly finished," she told Us.

When it comes to her daughter, Hazel, she's glad she'll be able to one day see her mom play a strong character. "I just loved playing a strong female for this," Blunt revealed. "I thought that was really exciting."

Here Come The Gowns! Marchesa Is Added To London Fashion Week Schedule

London has one up on New York Fashion Week next season, as Marchesa has been added to the September show schedule. The label, which is known for romantic frothy gowns, was founded by British designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, but traditionally shows in New York.

Marchesa are relocating to London for their Spring 2015 show in September, to mark their 10th anniversary. "We had been speaking with the British Fashion Council," Chapman explained to WWD, "we felt it was a good way to celebrate our anniversary." One thing is for certain, this will be the frock fest to end all frock fests. The trademark tulle, the full skirts, the embellishments - London get ready, you are about to get a lot more glam. There is no date or venue revealed yet, but that doesn't stop us dreaming of the front row. We'd like to see the full Marchesa fan club please. Instagram Pics Of The Day: Katy Perry And Adele Are Morphing Into Each Other?

That Katy Perry must meet a LOT of celebs and my God, have they been out in force to her stadium gigs this month... but nothing has been as exciting as Katy managing to snap an Instagram selfie with her 'Queen', Adele, when she popped backstage. And how much are they morphing into each other?! Spooky.

In less glamorous Instagram posts, Lena Dunham gets bitten on the bum, Harry Styles gets super cute with his puppy and ever the romantic, Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad, treats us to a snap of him and his 'little bird', wife Lauren. We are horribly jealous. Horribly.

Has Adriana Lima got Bieber fever?

It's enough to make us shudder; Adriana Lima and Justin Bieber 'hooked up' at the Cannes Film Festival, according to a US gossip rag.

The claims come courtesy of Us Weekly, who cites a source as saying: "Justin pursued her hard."

The couple are said to have met on May 20 at nightclub Gotha, where 20-year-old Bieber "made a beeline" (or should that be Bieber-line?) for the 32-year-old Victoria's Secret model.

READ: Adriana Lima splits from husband

"They were talking nonstop. They went home together around 5 a.m," added the source.

The pop squirt later posted a photo of himself and Lima on his Instagram page.

Lima is recently single after announcing the break up of her five year marriage to basketball player Marko Jaric, with whom she has two young daughters, Sienna and Valentina.

But those hoping for a catchy new portmanteau - maybe Adustin or Justiana? - shouldn't hold their breath.

"He had fun with Adriana," says a Bieber source. "[But] it won't turn into anything serious."

Watch out Leonardo, it looks like you've got modeliser competition in Bieber, who's also been linked to Barbara Palvin.

Male Gaze: LeVar Burton, Blast From the Past

Today, Star Trek commander and legendary read-outloud-er LeVar Burton launched a Kickstarter campaign to revive the long lost Reading Rainbow — the generally beloved PBS series you may remember for its pro-literacy theme song and regularly encouraged field trips to your local library. Released in 1993, the show — which was hosted and produced by Burton — enjoyed a 23-season run (as well as 26 Emmys) before it was canceled in 2006, and has since been reimagined as an app. Now Burton is determined to rescue today’s kids from the dearth of stimulating daytime programming: With help from viewers like you, he plans to launch a web-enabled Reading Rainbow, along with classroom supplements and subsidies for schools in need. Backers can look forward to LeVar-recorded voice mails, LeVar following you on Twitter, picnics, video chats, and various other ways to interact with LeVar.

Mariah Carey's Sheer Black Dress at World Music Awards 2014 or Beyonce's at the Super Bowl 2014: Who Wore the Roberto Cavalli Gown Best?

Mariah Carey wears the same sheer black dress as Beyonce's at a pre-Super Bowl event.

Sheer perfection!

Mariah Carey looked stunning for her performance at the World Music Awards on May 27 in Monte Carlo. The "#Beautiful" singer, who received the Pop Icon and Best-Selling Solo Artist of All Time awards, wore a long-sleeved Roberto Cavalli gown with sheer paneling throughout.

The flattering gown was also worn by another chart-topping global diva, Beyonce, back in February for the pre-Super Bowl DirecTV Super Saturday Night event in New York City. The sexy sheer dress came just a week after her jaw-dropping Michael Costello floral lace gown that she wore at the Grammys.

One point of difference between the two Cavallis, though, is the neckline. Carey's version featured a plunging neckline that exposed her decolletage. Bey's had a more modest, high-cut silhouette.

After the awards show, Carey, 44, tweeted a picture of her twins, 3, holding her awards, writing, "The best awards I've ever received: Roc & Roe!! Thank you Melissa & all at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo #L4L"

A Model Recommends: how to get Grace Kelly's red lip look

As the cinematic world celebrates Grace Kelly, we in beauty wanted to mark the late princess and Oscar-winning actress's beauty legacy too. So we asked Ruth Crilly, aka A Model Recommends, to recreate her iconic red lip look.

In town for the Cannes Film Festival, Crilly asked Dior international make-up artist Jamie Coombes to recreate the look on her, focusing specifically on Kelly's iconic fresh, red, lip.

Grace Kelly, with her Oscar for The Country Girl in 1955, wearing a powder blue dress created by Edith Head and her iconic red lip. Photo: Rex

"It wasn't like a classic red lip really," says Crilly. It was in fact, as Coombes confirms, a "soft, delicate, very sophisticated look." And that he says is all down to preparation, which starts with a lip conditioner, "just to really help smooth the lip surface."

Coombes applying balm to Crilly's lips.

Press it on, and blot off any excess with a tissue before applying an 'invisible' liner over the entire lip. "I don't want that classic red look where it's quite defined, I just want to keep it quite soft," says Coombes - and more than anything an invisible liner really does hold on to any pigment in the lipstick.

SEE: Grace Kelly's style in pictures

Unlike that classic red lip look which as Crilly admits, "is very high maintenance," the balm and liner application underlay also make any red stick that goes on over the top that much more even, and that much more long-lasting.

Step two; invisible liner to prep the lip and hold onto pigment.

Before any colour goes on, first use a highlighting powder, "on the cupids bow, just on top," explains Coombes. We in fact have two lip lines, one where the pigment finishes, and a faint white line above the lip which Coombes exaggerates with powder to make lips pop. He then places a little more on the outer corners, "to give that lovely lift," he says.

READ - That beauty moment: Grace Kelly in Rear Window, 1954

Coombes uses his ring finger to apply "just the right amount," of red to the Crilly's lips.

Lipstick time. Use your ring finger to apply colour from the bullet onto the lip, "pumping it into the lip," says Coombes. "It kind of stains the lips a little bit, so you don't get the full power of the lipstick, you just get this very delicate, more sophisticated look, but you're still getting that colour at the same time, which is so Grace Kelly."

Using fingers means the colour won't feel loaded up, and that you have just the right amount of finish, but, as Coombes advises, you might want to tidy up the edges, which he does using a lip brush, "just to join it all together."

"Rouge Dior was one of her favourite lipsticks," says Coombes, which is why he chose the classic 999 shade - one of the original colours - to recreate the look. "I do like a coral, but when you're going for that very chic look, this is kind of more appropriate," agrees Crilly. "Gorgeous."

Follow Coombes lead and join the edges by using a lip brush.

Meet Tessie! Mulberry Enters A New Era With Lower-Priced Line

Mulberry's new Tessie Hobo

It's been tricky times for Mulberry but good news comes to its loyal fans in the shape of the new, lower-priced 'Tessie' range starting at £495. Treading familiar ground this week, the leatherware brand is launching a brand new collection of uber-classic designs, pitched at prices that are far more redolent of their early days.

The sure-fire hit of the Alexa satchel of 2010, sent prices of this tan leather bag soaring from the its launch price of £695 to £1,100 but this about turn will please fans, with more accessible arm candy on offer from the Somerset-based brand.

Embracing the firm trend for the cross-body bag, the new ‘Tessie’ satchel arrives as an update on Mulberry’s popular ‘Effie’ satchel. Whilst the mini version weighs in at £495 (here in black and red), the medium bag (in oxblood) will set you back £595. There is still a high-end offering from the Tessie though, this croc-effect satchel in Midnight (bottom right) is a good £795 and that extra bit of luxury will ensure that all kinds of shoppers (and celebraities alike) are drawn to this new line.

The Tessie satchel

Mulberry's new range is a thoughtful one for sure, whilst priced more reasonably than we expect from the luxury retailer, the bags are totally timeless, not to mention uber-practical. We have a feeling these hot potatoes will be flying out of stores in no time, now you just need to choose your colour...

Cast your mind back to the Mulberry FROWs of seasons past, should you need some inspiration for your all-important colour choice...

Anna Wintour leads fashion names on Forbes's 100 most powerful women list

American Vogue editor-in-chief and Condé Nast artistic director Anna Wintour leads the pack at number 39, two places higher than last year. Her fundraising for both the newly-anointed Anna Wintour Costume Center and President Obama's re-election campaign come into play in her positioning.

A trio of designers are also included - Diane von Furstenberg (68), Miuccia Prada (75) and Tory Burch (79). Both Prada and Burch are credited for their multi-billion dollar fashion empires.

Brazilian Gisele Bündchen is the only model to make the list, and it's thanks to her incredible earning power. Forbes estimates that she raked in $42 million last year, though the model has herself denied the figure is quite that high. Nevertheless, she is by far the highest-earning model in the world, with current campaigns including Chanel beauty, H&M and Pantene. Stakes in Brazilian shoemaker Grendene and her own flip flop brand Ipanema, as well as a goodwill ambassadorship with the UN, put her safely on the list.

Bringing up the rear (quite literally) at 93 is Sara Blakely, creator of shapewear Spanx. Blakely made history when she turned her $5,000 life savings into a billion-dollar brand and made herself the youngest ever self-made female billionaire in the process. Additionally, she was the first female billionaire to join Bill Gates and Warren Buffet's Giving Pledge, pledging to gove at least half of her fortune to charity.

Noticeable by her absence on this year's list is Inditex co-founder Rosalia Mera, who passed away in August 2013. Her daughter, Sandra Ortega Mera, who inherited her multi-billion pound stake in Inditex does not appear on this list.

Miley Cyrus Looks Like a Lady in Dazzling Gowns at World Music Awards 2014: See Her Gorgeous Looks!

Miley Cyrus at the World Music Awards 2014

Miley, is that you?

At the World Music Awards on May 27 in Monte Carlo, Miley Cyrus looked unrecognizable in clothing that actually covered up her normally scantily-clad body.

For her performance, the "Wrecking Ball" singer, 21, wore a ladylike strapless gown by Giambattista Valli. The full-skirted frock featured a moody floral pattern with a slight sheen to it.

Then, to accept her awards for World's Best Video and World's Best Female Artist, Cyrus, who was nominated for 14 awards, continued her modest fashion choices and dazzled in a long-sleeved fitted silver Kaufman Franco gown.

The dresses are a dramatic change from Cyrus' Bangerz tour outfits, which include an array of skin-tight bodysuits, all the better to gyrate onstage in, and from recent red carpet appearances like the lingerie-inspired slip dress from the pre-Grammy gala in January.

Thomas Tait wins LVMH Young Designer Prize

Thomas Tait is no stranger to winning prizes; in 2010 he won the first Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize (£25,000 worth of funding) and today he has scooped the inaugural LVMH Young Designer Prize.

Judged by a star fashion panel which included Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo, Nicolas Ghesquière and LVMH's executive vice-president Delphine Arnault, Montreal-born Tate pipped his London Fashion Week 'colleague' Simone Rocha to the post - as well as 10 other fledgling semi-finalist designers.

The €300,000 (approx. £244,000) prize money and mentoring package will no doubt help take Hackney-based Tait's business to the next level. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins (where, aged 24, he was the youngest ever student to complete the womenswear MA course), he launched his label for spring/summer 2011 and is currently stocked in Dover Street Market and MatchesFashion.com in London, as well as a handful of luxury retailers internationally.

Arnault commented: "The Jury was captivated by the personality and the work of Thomas Tait. He is a great talent. I'm proud LVMH can help him develop his brand. I have no doubt though all the other Prize finalists will have an amazing journey and I wish them luck."

Semi-finalists Miuniku and Hood by Air were each awarded €100,000 (£82,000) and a year-long mentorship.

Tait's clean and understated aesthetic quickly established him as a name to watch at the shows, and his sense of humour is always apparent - a recent invite to his London Fashion Week show sneakily featured the word 'Lesbians' in the address instead of 'London'.

No doubt luxury conglomerate LVMH, which owns Louis Vuitton, Dior and Givenchy, and which recently bought stakes in fellow London labels Nicholas Kirkwood and J. W. Anderson, will be watching its new protégée closely.

Q&A: Simon Porte Jacquemus on Being a Young Designer in Paris

Simon Porte Jacquemus is a 24-year-old self-taught designer who started his own label at age 19. Born in Salon-de-Provence in southeastern France, he has worked his way forward wholly independently, and now has his own studio just off the Place des Vosges. His collections feature crop tops, full skirts, oversize T-shirts, jumbo clown coats, blobby dresses, asymmetrical pieces, and slouchy proportions. He revels in “off” taste and juvenilia (he tells me he sat like a well-behaved child waiting in front of his telephone for our interview to begin).

He’s recently published a book in tandem with his spring/summer 2014 collection, La Grande Motte, a reference to a seaside resort in the Languedoc-Roussillon region built in the 1960s and '70s, characterized by its homogenized architecture. He is also one of 12 finalists for the prestigious LVMH Prize, which will be announced today. He spoke to the Cut about Rei Kawakubo, his burgeoning interest in menswearand why he believes Paris is still the star fashion city.

So effusive are the accolades lavished on Amal Alamuddin, the human rights lawyer recently engaged to an up-and-coming Hollywood actor, that a reporter on Radio 4's Profile confessed on air that she had been one of their most difficult subjects. If only Profile had examined her clothes. The clues to her character are all there.

That not wholly surprising charge that she's a workaholic, for instance. Well, duh. Anyone who takes such a 360-degree, meticulous approach to monochrome as Alamuddin recently displayed in one of her dress-down sorties must be able to call on extraordinary focus. If you were an international war criminal or a victim of injustice, that's the kind of attention to detail you'd want on your team.

Then there are the Soft Power Suits. A far cry from the strident shoulder pads and misbegotten shapes of the Take. Me. Seriously crowd, Alamuddin's matching tops and skirts (very now) in vibrant colours are a quietly confident manifestation of effectiveness.

Beauty and brains have always been a high-wire double act, the one tending to cancel out the other as far as many observers are concerned. But Alamuddin, an alumnus of Oxford, fluent in Arabic, French and English and possessor of undeniably shiny, Middletonian hair, seems to be extremely agile. At 36, she has both represented the unlovable (Assange and Gaddafi's spy chief) and advised the august (Kofi Annan) - as well as topping the 2013 tumblr poll of London's Hottest Barristers.

Geoffrey Robertson, QC, cites her defence of the morally dubious as evidence of her commitment to "the basic idea that everyone is entitled to a basic level of dignity".

It may also be that she's instinctively drawn to the controversial and teeth-grating. That's not an unidentified "close friend" saying that: that's the somewhat unconventional pairing of her ripped jeans and frilly socks talking.

Either way, Robertson was so impressed that he offered her a job on the spot, after she came to talk to his chambers about Lebanon, where she was born. "We offered her an exceptional pupillage, which we do for exceptional people, and she was indeed exceptional," he told Profile.

Never mind Clooney - the style-osphere is smitten. There are now websites devoted entirely to the contents of her wardrobe (although at least one of them came over a bit faint over her ripped jeans).

To be fair, it is quite a large repository of clothes. Brogues, metallics, top-handled bags, white trousers and that trophy of 2014 trends, the pink coat, all feature regularly in Alamuddin's fashion library, along with a roster of top fashion names. That pink coat was by Balenciaga. The silver brogues were Prada. Another pair were by Nicholas Kirkwood.

This does not suggest a traditional bluestocking who gets dressed in the dark and whose head is so deeply interred in the records of the Hague's Criminal Courts that she doesn't have time for a sneaky peek at Vogue or Grazia.

She is a bluestocking, though - albeit the souped-up, 2014 model who knows this year's Miu Miu from last year's Mulberry and who likes to reward herself after a hard day's grinding research. She may even occasionally distract herself from Clause 470, Section XXXVII, with a DIY manicure. Again, this observation is evidence- rather than proof-based. But we wouldn't be surprised. Human rights, as Robertson points out, is not intrinsically glamorous work, "cramped over a desk with thousands of pages of case law to get through in an evening".

The daughter of an academic father and a high-profile journalist mother, she moved to London from war‑ravaged Beirut when she was three. Those dual cultural influences are also present in the way she dresses: dexterously businesslike during the day, classically but sedately sexy at night, in silky red dresses and high heels - but always with a ladylike tote bag nestling in the crook of her elbow or dangling off a shoulder. When that marriage finally happens in September, the fashion world will go crazy. For Alamuddin is the real thing: a woman who can't be bought; a racier Duchess of Cambridge; and a genuine intellect (as opposed to the rent-a-pseuds who appear in various glossy ad campaigns).

Does any of this matter? Yes, if you think we could do with a few more positive role models of intelligent women who haven't had to compromise their liking for pretty, feminine stuff to get ahead. Additionally, there are plenty of commentators who theorise that in finally committing to a woman who is more than his intellectual equal, Clooney may have set his sights on a world beyond movies.

Karen Krizanovich, film-writer and broadcaster, believes that Amal and George are planning bigger things. "I think we can look at the White House… the George and Amal show [could be] like the Bill and Hillary show."

But with far better clothes.

CRACKING THE DRESS CODE by Ellie Pithers

FROM L-R: SEDATELY SEXY
Last October Alamuddin was still 'unidentified woman in a red dress' - but one look at those silver lace-up Chanel boots tells us the barrister is ready and waiting to take up the mantle of being 'George Clooney's fiancée'. The nude tights are slightly ageing, but the red is a fearless acknowledgment that a law career will now necessarily be offset by exclusive photo shoots with People magazine.

RATIONAL EXUBERANCE
Behold, Alamuddin's prime method of negotiating a paparazzi mob: striking colour, this time bubblegum pink Balenciaga. Not one to hog the limelight, she keeps the dress simple (black, tailored, short) and reaches for complicated accessories - in this case, an interesting pair of OASAP black ankle boots with a cut-out heel and a tasselled clutch bag.

METICULOUSLY MONOCHROME
The devil's in the detail with this workaday uniform; note how the buckles on the Roger Vivier pumps perfectly match the leather detailing on Alamuddin's Alice + Olivia tote bag. Note also the old-school scrupulousness: the trousers are freshly pressed, the shirt tucked in, the hair neatly blow-dried. Just imagine what forensically meticulous memos on drones reside in that handbag.

FROM L-R: THE SOFT POWER SUIT
As ever, the accessories maketh the outfit. A Balenciaga Velo bag in sandy suede hints at a more boho side, while patent Stella McCartney courts suggest she knows to tone down the wacky footwear when on duty. The matching jacket and skirt adhere to the legal eagle dresscode while asserting her knowledge of what suits her; the jacket sleeves are slightly cropped and the skirt hits just above the knee, to flattering effect.

TRUST ME, I'M A LAWYER
Another day, another nonchalant outfit. The neon Perspex necklace says 'I'm not all about white collar fraud', and the iPod headphones poking out from yet another smart handbag point to those reported 'intersocial skills to die for'. A trench coat teamed with comfortable low heels denotes an enviable practical streak.

SOFTNESS IS HER STRENGTH
This dress is dividing opinion on Twitter - too saccharine for a woman defending a murderous intelligent chief? - but whatever your stance, it's a world away from the ill‑fitting power suits normally associated with special advisers to Kofi Annan. Pink suits Alamuddin, and this demure shift dress (our money's on Moschino) demonstrates a relaxed, confident approach to workwear. Nul points for the mismatched shoes, though; a bit too Polly Pocket for our liking.

THEY WEAR WHAT THEY WANT AND THEY THINK FOR THEMSELVES: HALLELUJAH!

Amal Alamuddin's professional achievements effortlessly trump the circumstances that have seen her propelled into these pages. And yet, here she is - not only in The Telegraph , but in supermarket tabloids, via shameful online sidebar, to the heights of Vanity Fair .

Thrillingly, this gender-reversed, real-life enactment of the Notting Hill celebrity myth - the sudden introduction of a "civilian" into the spotlight - could disrupt the laziest habit in contemporary fashion: paying people to wear it. Alamuddin neither Instagrams her holiday swimwear (with obligatory macaroon) nor tweets her fondness for whichever brand of cashmere or champagne has slipped her a few grand to do so.

Instead of "collaborating" on capsule collections of designer clothes (for a fee) she so far simply wears them - and when she does, no fashion brand has (yet) sent out a "dressing release" to inform media outlets that she has "chosen" (for a fee) to flash their shoes, bags, jewellery or dresses.

What began innocently enough at the Oscars 25 or so years ago, when Giorgio Armani offered grateful actresses the chance to wear his gowns as they walked the red carpet, has mushroomed into product-placement on an industrial scale. This overemphasises fashion as a spectator sport, at the expense of exploring the tastes of "civilian" men and women who keenly appreciate style but who might not care to selfie their thigh-gaps at Californian music festivals (for a fee).

These women of unfiltered taste - such as obstetrician Chandrima Biswas or the English National Ballet's Tamara Rojo, both of whom have featured in our Saturday "Lessons from the Stylish" interviews - are, just like Alamuddin, impressive human beings whose fondness for looking chic is merely one of their many attributes. Currently, people such as these are routinely thrust from the limelight by the for-a-fee brigade.

Often it is only when they happen to have prominent jobs - women such as Christine Lagarde, Kirsty Wark or Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo - that they outmanoeuvre the hard-twerking collaboristas into the wider public consciousness. This is a shame, and not because women (or men) of achievement should be routinely reduced into publicly scrutinised clothes horses.

It is extremely refreshing - at least from a fashion editor's point of view - to contemplate fashion choices that have been freely made, unmediated by stylist or contract, by people for whom what they wear is an adjunct to what they do - not the main event.
