Kristen Stewarts Parisian La Fidelite Dinner

After her gorgeous arrival at the Balenciaga show this morning, Kristen Stewart was spotted eating at La Fidelite in Paris this evening (September 27).

The 22-year-old actress donned a chic striped top with black shorts as she casually made her way in to enjoy a delicious dinner.

Funny enough, the English translation of KStew's restaurant choice means 'faithful' and in light of recent reconciliation rumors, that's exactly how the "Twilight" star needs to act.

Recent reports claim that Kristen and Robert Pattinson are not only back together, they are also shacking up again.

Enjoy the pictures of Kristen Stewart out in Paris (September 27).

Paul Hardy Celebrates 10th Anniversary With a Whipcracking Calgary Show

Canadian born, bred, and based, Calgary designer Paul Hardy has been crafting his delectable creations for 10 years. His first show opened at the 2002 Toronto Fashion Week, where it was welcomed with rave reviews. Regularly compared with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney, Hardy's aesthetic is eclectic sophistication, given his penchant for shredded silk evening skirts, shearling vests, and a trademark neutral palette.

Since the debut of that first collection in 2002, Hardy has designed for the likes of Bette Midler, Michael Michelle, Carrie Fisher, Diane Kruger, Keshia Chanté, Alanis Morrisette, U2's The Edge and Daniel Lanois, Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn, and Sarah McLachlan.

He has slowly expanded his empire to include a limited-edition fine jewellery collection comprising Canadian certified diamonds and a handmade Irish knitwear line named Paul Hardy Kaille. In 2007, he opened his first freestanding boutique in Calgary, and in 2011 he designed the costumes for the Alberta Ballet’s Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

More recently, he mixed his love for everything en pointe with his fondness for Celtic knits, creating a raw ballet outfit for the Design Exchange exhibits, 60 Years of Designing the Ballet and The Tutu Project. Inspired by cavemen, hunters and gatherers, the bodice explores the evolution of humanity and its development in refining the arts. The asymmetrical one sleeve top is composed of hand spun wool and is hand knit by knitters in St. Andrew’s, Scotland.

Earlier this year, Hardy was also commissioned to design a commemorative white hat for the centennial anniversary of the Calgary Stampede and to celebrate Tourism Calgary's iconic "white hat." The limited-edition hats were gifted to notable Canadians including Bryan Adams, Michael Buble, and Karen Kain.

Needless to say, he's a designer to watch and, if you've yet to feast upon his innate clothing, you won't want to miss the premiere of his 2013 Spring/Summer collection at an exciting fashion show in Calgary, the Culture Capital of Canada, on Saturday, October 20, 2012.

The one-of-a-kind event and runway show will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hardy's successful design career and host entertainers, fashion aficionados and VIP guests from across the country. There will also be a musical collaboration by artists including country music superstar Paul Brandt, two-time Juno award winner Greg Sczebel, and an ensemble from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

"In partnership with Tourism Calgary, I look forward to showcasing my collection and celebrating my 10th anniversary in the city that I'm proud to call home. It's an opportunity to show the rest of Canada Calgary's cultural gems of food, fashion, music and design. Calgary is truly evolving into a fashion and design destination, and I believe the city has been ready and waiting for this kind of event," explains the esteemed designer.

So if you live in the Stampede City, grab your Sarah Shell handbag and slap on your most discerning eye for a peek at what Hardy's conjured for his latest collection.

Kate Spade New York On Dressing Pippa Middleton: 'She Looks Effortlessly Put Together'

We've long been fans of Kate Spade New York's colourful, quirky aesthetic over at Grazia HQ as well as the brand's print-tastic collections and fun sense of style. It also makes us nostalgic for Sex and The City's Charlotte York and her Upper East Side polish. Oh, how we loved her Kate Spade New York accessorising...

But 2012's Kate Spade New York has a rather different super fan and she's not a TV sitcom character either (though Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf is certainly in the running). KSNY's current unofficial ambassador is none other than Pippa Middleton!

Blair Waldorf and Charlotte York accessorise with Kate Spade New York

In fact, we can't remember a week in the last few months when we haven't seen a new snap of the Duchess of Cambridge's sister showing off her latest Kate Spade New York wears. Pippa's got the fab oversized sunnies, she's nabbed the colour pop jeans, treated herself to not one but two of the colour block cardigans from the Spring Summer collection and has been seen in a gorgeous peplum blouse. As if that wasn't enough, Pippa's carried the brand's Delevan Terrace wicker bag more times than any other bag in her summer wardrobe!

Across the pond, Kate Spade New York are loving Pippa right back. They exclusively spoke to Grazia Daily about how much they admire Pippa's "feminine yet modern sense of style". "She always looks effortlessly put together and Pippa isn’t afraid to wear colour – which is one of our favourite things here at Kate Spade New York". Hear, hear!

And what of the Kate Spade New York bag Pippa can't put down? "We think it’s fantastic how Pippa repeats her outfits and accessories, it sets a great example that fashion doesn’t have to be thrown out after one wear." Well, when accessories look this good, we have to conquer.

Finally, as the new Autumn Winter collection hits the shops, what's Pippa's latest purchase? The Kate Spade New York Kaelin Potts Point bag, that's what. Do you want one too? Thought so.

Chris Brown Fails Probation Drug Test

Veering off track after a positive start, Chris Brown is confirmed to have recently failed a drug test.

The "Kiss Kiss" hitmaker attended a probation progress hearing on Monday (September 24) during which a judge noted that the R&B singer tested positive for marijuana in a June 18th urinalysis.

In Brown's defense, he explained to his probation officer that he had smoked in California (where he has a medical marijuana card), but was given the test in Virginia, where marijuana is illegal under any circumstances.

Getting a break, Judge Patricia Schnegg concluded that she would not revoke Brown's probation and said that she had never initially ordered the singer to undergo mandatory drug testing.

Though Judge Schnegg let Chris off the hook this time, she did give him a verbal warning, saying, "This is my advice to you… You are not an average person who can sit in their living room and do what you wanna do without anybody watching what you do. You are not only in the public eye, but you are on probation," adding, "I'm going to caution you that you should be very mindful."

Brown was also ordered to meet up with his probation officer within 72 hours to discuss a difference in community service hours, as prosecutors are claiming that the 23-year-old has 121 hours left to complete, but his attorney Mark Geragos believes his star client is closer to completion than what's being noted.

Below are pictures of Chris Brown making his court appearance (September 24).

Kate Moss Makes It Official: Get Your Clog On!

First off, let's get one things straight: clogs are cool! They might be slightly awkward to actually walk in and granted, they're not the sexiest of footwear but if anyone's going to convince us to crack out chunky stacked wooden heels, it's Kate Moss.

Just look at this snap of the supermodel clacking through the streets of London with bestie Sadie Frost this weekend. Those are indeed clogs on her dainty feet. They lend a 1970s flair to her laidback Sunday uniform of scruffy jeans + black tee and are as sartorially unique as their owner. Okay, so the black, red and yellow floral design verge a tad too far on the side of Dutch milkmaid for our liking, but in true Mossy style, she pulls them off with aplomb.

Kate Moss Makes It Official: Get Your Clog On!

Kinder Aggugini Spring Summer 2013

Need more proof? No problem! Prior to the Moss clog-spot, we were excited to see the clumpy footwear gracing Kinder Aggugini's catwalk during London Fashion Week mere days ago [above]. Then long-time clog-lover Pixie Geldof rocked up to the House of Holland show wearing a sparkling pair of towering black clogs and her fellow FROWers were agog. Style-setters including Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson and Sarah Jessica Parker are also avid cloggers, as you'll see in the gallery above, and the traditional Dutch soles have graced the finest catwalks from Celine to Chanel.

So will you be adding a hippy twist to your Autumn wardrobe by getting clogged? If so, there's no better place to go than Swedish label HasBeens, who have a fab selection of clogs, and on the highstreet, Topshop is forever heaving with cloggy creations. And don't forget: they come in every variety from sturdy platforms to towering heels and you'll find them covered in metal studs or feminine florals, so there really is no excuse. Besides, if they're good enough for Kate...

Rihanna Tweets Support of Chris Brown on Court Date

As Chris Brown prepared for a probation hearing today, he received words of encouragement from an unlikely source.

Earlier today, Rihanna tweeted, "Praying for you baby, my best wishes are with you today! Remember that whatever God does in our lives, it is WELL DONE!!! #1Love."

Later, she erased any doubt as to the intended subject by tweeting, " @chrisbrown I'm praying for you and wishing u the best today!" The comment was promptly retweeted by her former boyfriend with the comment, "thank u so much."

The probation, of course, originated from the 23-year-old rapper's 2009 assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna after the MTV Video Music Awards.

Whoa! Newly Single Amy Poehler Flashes Cleavage on First Red Carpet Post-Split at 2012 Emmys

Amy Poehler arrives at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Bodacious after breakup!

On the red carpet for Sunday's 2012 Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles -- her first carpet walk since she and Will Arnett broke news of their separation to Us Weekly -- Amy Poehler showed her sexiest side yet.

With her blonde locks in sultry, bombshell waves, the newly single 41-year-old mother of two wore a stunning Stella McCartney gown, featuring a plunging neckline that showed off her cleavage.

Nominated for two Emmy Awards this year -- for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy, both for Parks and Recreation -- Poehler didn't mention her shocking split from Arnett, 42, when chatting with Ryan Seacrest. But one of her boys with Arnett -- Archie, 3, and Abel, 2 -- helped dress her for the big night. "This is a two dollar adjustable ring from my child's toy box," she told Seacrest.

Although bubbly during her chat, an insider told Us Weekly that behind the scenes, "The past few months have been rough for them . . .I don't think anyone in their circle saw this coming."

Still, Poehler and Arnett "have a lot of respect for each other," the source says.

The reign of Chanel's Little Black Jacket

'Some people think luxury is the opposite of poverty,' said Coco Chanel. 'It is not. It is the opposite of vulgarity.'

There can be few better representations of Chanel's vision of luxury than her tweed jacket, originally inspired, says Karl Lagerfeld, by 'a Tyrolean jacket with four pockets and a braid trim' that was worn by staff at a smart Austrian hotel. How many items of clothing are so instantly recognisable without bearing any trace of a logo? What is more understated, more luxurious, than the short, collarless, pocketed jacket that has ceased simply to be the sum of its parts and has come to represent everything that is quintessentially Chanel?

IN PICTURES: Chanel's 'Little Black Jacket' exhibition opens in New York

From left: Alexa Chung, model and presenter; Uma Thurman, actress

Lagerfeld, along with the ex editor-in-chief of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld, has paid homage to this classic with a new book, The Little Black Jacket: Chanel's Classic Revisited. A showcase for the jacket's versatility, the book features Lagerfeld's photographs of a roster of Chanel's friends and fans, all sporting the same black jacket. 'The model chosen for the book is the most classic one,' says Lagerfeld, 'which is the closest to the original jacket Mademoiselle Chanel created.' Says Carine Roitfeld: 'It's like jeans or a T-shirt: it's something that belongs to everyone.'

READ: What I'm Wearing - a Chanel style jacket

Stella Tennant accessorises hers with a leather pilot's helmet: 'The LBJ is a kind of uniform,' the model says, 'that the individual can subvert into their own style.' Elle Fanning wears hers with a daisy-chain headpiece: 'Sliding the jacket on for the first time caused an immediate chill. I felt like a piece of Coco Chanel was living inside of me.' Sofia Coppola goes bohemian with bare feet: 'You can wear the Chanel little black jacket any time, day or night, casual or dressy.' There's even a Chanel-style nun, courtesy of the Danish model Freja Beha. The pictures also form an exhibition - opening at the Saatchi Gallery next month - that promises to bring together the very modern triumvirate of celebrity, fashion and art.

Joan Smalls, model

Chanel launched her short, boxy, tweed jacket in 1954, as part of her postwar comeback collection (she was pitting herself against the acres of fabric and full skirts of Christian Dior's New Look, a look she felt was far too old-fashioned for the modern woman). The jackets were a triumph of style and wearability. Assembled without bust darts to make them supple, lined with silk, with sleeves with a slight curve for comfort, they were structured (a small brass chain was sewn inside the bottom of the hem to make sure it hung perfectly) but the wearer could still raise her arms above her head, 'since a garment's elegance lies in the freedom of movement it allows', as Chanel put it.

Since then Karl Lagerfeld may have paired the jackets with jeans, swimming costumes, even sequinned shorts, but at Chanel's workshops on rue Cambon the jackets are still made the same way. It is, says Lagerfeld, the item every designer dreams of inventing. 'Some things never go out of fashion in the world of fashion: jeans, the white shirt and the Chanel jacket.'

Little Black Jacket (Thames & Hudson, £50), by Karl Lagerfeld, is available from Telegraph Books (0844 871 1516; books.telegraph.co.uk ) at £45 plus £1.35 p&p

The exhibition is at the Saatchi Gallery, London SW3, from October 12 to 28 ( saatchi-gallery.co.uk )

Milan Fashion Week: Gucci spring/summer 2013

Once it was the only bankable shade in town, but has black finally had its day? In the UK this past summer, it almost became extinct. One retailer told me recently that she could sell anything at the luxury end of the market - so long as it wasn't in black.

In New York, where a funereal wardrobe used to be a condition of residency, fashionistas have been drenched in colour and suffused with noisy patterns. More implausibly still, French fashion editors, while not abandoning black entirely - les pantalons colores, jamais! - are, in a courageous, heretical gesture, mixing it with a little white.

Nonetheless, while jewel hues and flamboyant prints are fashion's equivalent of Mamma Mia - escapism from economic gloom. Nonetheless - you'd expect Gucci to maintain a position at the murkier end of the spectrum.

READ: Milan Fashion Week spring/summer 2013 latest

Gucci has spent the best part of 20 years honing its archytype, art directing some of the most consistent advertising campaigns and catwalk shows in the world. An after dark kind of creature who sleeps in until after lunch (an effective approach to avoiding calories) and lives a substantial part of her life in a twilight zone, Gucci woman has smoky eyes, ruthlessly subjugated hair and a weakness for dominatrix clothes. She hardly changes. When she does occasionally wear colour it's dusky, smoky - or blindingly white. Soft shades are for ageing wives who can't risk black next to their faces. Pastels are for wimps. Gucci woman is neither.

But even a construct as established as Gucci's can be tweaked. Recently the brand has adopted the wholesome, horse-riding Charlotte Casiraghi of Monaco as one of its models. Gucci's head designer, Frida Giannini, spoke of an aristorcratic muse this season. The starting point, she explained, came from "Richard Avedon and Gian Paolo Barbieri's historic photographs".

IN PICTURES: Gucci spring/summer 2013

When she talks of history, she means the 1970s: bell bottoms and bell sleeves, belted tunic-come-shirts-come-jackets, swirling prints and show-stopping, long organza dresses with scooped-out backs and cascades of stiff, architectural ruffles. Above all she means colour - yellows, turqoise, cobalt but also pinks Depending on your cultural heritage, it was reminiscent of those grand American hostesses at play in Palm Beach - or of Margot from The Good LIfe .

Either way it made for great pictures and the footage being shot from the side of the catwalk on Super 8 film by a Gucci photographer, will presumably surface shortly in a retro-tinged campaign.

Meanwhile, I wouldn't want Gucci loyalists to think there was no black. It's just that once the black section would be the only clothes that actually sold. Now, even at Gucci, you can't be so sure.

NYFW Newcomer Katie Holmes Adds Cosmetics Model to Her Growing Fashion Resume

Some stars go into hiding after a divorce, but Katie Holmes seems to be busier than ever after her split from Tom Cruise. She's been photographed a lot bonding with daughter Suri in New York and it's just been revealed that the multitasking mom is the new face of Bobbi Brown cosmetics. This isn't Katie's first modeling gig since she's already appeared in advertisements for Miu Miu, Ann Taylor, J. Crew, and John Frieda. The versatile actress also has a clothing line called Holmes & Yang, which plays right into her classic sense of style.

A nude pair of Lanvin T-strap heels rounded out the look. When it came time for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles last September, Katie opted for a sleek electric blue Calvin Klein Collection dress accented by a thin metallic belt. Pierre Hardy shoes completed her red carpet look.

Elie Saab's Fall 2011 Couture sapphire blue strapless chiffon embellished gown with velvet waistband helped Katie make quite an impression at the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in February. She accessorized with an ivory Lanvin minaudière. Katie ran errands in New York City earlier this summer decked out in a colorful casual ensemble. She wore a green printed cami from the Gap with her line's orchid pleated skirt.

While Holmes & Yang’s first fashion week collection garnered mixed reviews with its assortment of complementary go-to pieces, there’s no denying that Katie’s sophisticated style deserves some praise.

Photographer dies at London Fashion Week party

Peter Alexander, a 28-year-old photographer who had exhibited work in London, Iceland and America, was reportedly 'messing around' with an unnamed 20-year-old male model when they both stumbled through the large open window which was covered by a closed blind.

The model suffered pelvic injuries and is said to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The party was being hosted by fashion PR company Blow at a house in French Place, Shoreditch in east London on Friday, the first day of London Fashion Week.

"He was eccentric, a total character. He used to sell cameras down Brick Lane and he had all the banter. He wasn't a conventional guy and we loved him a lot," Billa Baldwin, a friend of Mr Alexander, told the Daily Mail .

Michael Oliveira-Salac, director at Blow, said: 'We are all very distressed by the incident. It is not an easy time. We have been provided little or no information as the police are still doing their investigation. Obviously our thoughts are with the families of the deceased and the injured man."

Kate Middleton Wears a Navy Mulberry Dress And Stuart Weitzman Wedges In Marau

The Duchess of Cambridge has given Mulberry the thumbs up ahead of the brand's Spring Summer 2013 presentation tomorrow. Although Kate won't be sitting front row she's added the coveted Brit designer to the long list of catwalk names she's been seen wearing on her official tour of Asia, which include Prabal Gurung, Alexander McQueen and Erdem. The DoC has previously been spotted wearing Mulberry back in November last year when was snapped at Buckingham Palace wearing a £1400 silk ‘Cabbage’ green pleated dress.

Today she and Prince William touched down in Marau as part of today's busy schedule and Kate returned to a darker colour palette after embracing colour in a green print Jonathan Saunders frock, a batik orange and pink dress and a yellow Jaeger shirt dress over the last couple of days. As she exited the aeroplane she looked city chic in a full sleeveless dress in 'Nightshade Blue' Broderie Anglaise from Mulberry’s Spring Summer 2012 collection.

The frock has a cute collar and Kate wore it nipped in at the waist with a matching patent belt. Once again the DoC wore her reliable Stuart Weitzman wedges (pointed out to us by the lovely Helen from Kate’s Style List). While she may have avoided bright hues William certainly drew the eye in pink shirt. The royal couple were given gifts of traditional necklaces made of shell money, worth up to £150 each by locals who they met on their arrival. Stay tuned as we bring you more details.

In the meantime, check out Grazia's Kate Middleton Look Book.

Kate Middleton Wears a Navy Dress and L.K.Bennett Wedges As She Arrives In Marau

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have touched down in Marau as part of today's busy schedule on the seventh day of their Asian tour. Kate has returned to a darker colour palette after embracing colour in a green print Jonathan Saunders frock, a batik orange and pink dress and a yellow Jaeger shirt dress over the last couple of days. As she exited the aeroplane she looked city chic in a navy embroidered dress with a cute collar which was nipped in at the waist with a navy patent belt. Once again the DoC wore her reliable L.K.Bennett wedges as she was greeted at the airport. William drew the eye in a colour pop pink shirt, while the royal couple were given gifts of tradtional necklaces by the locals they met on their arrival. Stay tuned as we bring you more details.

Kate Middleton Wears Yellow Shirt Dress By Jaeger In The Solomon Islands Capital Honiara

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continue their nine day tour of Asia today with a very busy schedule. First off the royal couple visited the Prime Minister and members of the cabinet in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands where they're currently staying. Kate's colourful wardrobe reign continued as she wore a yellow dress by Jaeger for the meeting along with her trusty nude L.K.Bennett Sledge pumps. The pleated shirt dress has a bow around the waist and is made from 100% cotton, which is ideal for enduring the heat and humidity of the South Pacific. Unfortunately for Copy Kates the full skirted frock  is now out of stock, but was reduced from £180 to £75.

Kate's had a very tropical couple of days in the Solomon Islands after wearing a printed Jonathan Saunders Evelyn cotton dress for her arrival and a batik strapless piece by a local boutique for an evening reception last night.

Following their government meeting today Kate and William were invited to visit a cultural village and view performances by the nine provinces that make up the nation of the Solomon Islands. While Kate has so far stayed in her Jaeger frock, the couple are soon due to go their separate ways as the Duchess of Cambridge attends a reception for Solomon Islands women's groups. Stay tuned as we bring you more details.

In the meantime, check out Grazia's Kate Middleton Look Book.

Tropical Queen! Punchy prints as Kate arrives in the Solomon Islands

Tropical colours and a punchy print… Yep, we reckon the Duchess of Cambridge couldn’t have arrived in the exotic Soloman Islands in a better dress. It helps too that it’s designed by one of the best British design talents of the moment, Jonathan Saunders.

It’s the first time the Duchess has chosen to wear anything by the Scottish-born designer. Surprising, perhaps, given that his simple but sexy dresses have already been adopted by those in a similar official position as Kate, such as Samantha Cameron and Michelle Obama. So though no doubt her tour wardrobe would have been decided long before the scandal broke over those topless pictures of her, the Saunders power dress would help her feel confident stepping out into today’s crowd.

Kate and William Solomon Islands

And what a crowd it was. The Royal couple were driven through the streets of Honiara on a war canoe built on the back of a pick up truck, wearing traditional floral greeting around their necks.

Kate Middleton Jonathan Saunders dress

Kate paired her Jonathan Saunders Evelyn cotton dress – which is still on sale for £840 at Matches boutique – with a Jane Taylor designed hat and those all-too-familiar LK Bennett heels. No blisters for her, then!

Next up, the Royal couple will attend a state dinner under the stars in the Solomon Islands. Kate is apparently wearing a dress she only tried on a couple of hours ago - so we're thinking something local and tropical!

We'll be updating you live as it happens. But in the meantime, check out Grazia's Kate Middleton Look Book.

Michael Kors: Kors celebre

Among the modern designer's career requirements - stamina, photo-friendliness, media savvy, extreme focus and a rhino-like armour against the slings and arrows of critics - empathy ranks low. This, thinks Michael Kors, is why all too often, even after all the size-zero furore, 'you still see a skeletal model on the catwalk sometimes. There are designers who think it's ironic. Or maybe they just don't want to be told what to do. Or - and this is worse - they think it's boring to do something that looks beautiful. Well, last time I heard, pretty wasn't a dirty word.'

You will not see cadavers on a Kors catwalk. You will see Carmen Kass, the blond, rangy 33-year-old Estonian model who was huge in the Noughties, or Arizona Muse, the brunette 23-year-old mother-of-one who is huge now. Kors came of age in the era of supermodels. He likes the women in his shows to look sexy, healthy and bronzed, basking in unashamedly sleek, rich-looking clothes. Radically, he also likes his models to smile.

New York Fashion Week: Michael Kors spring/summer 2013

'I get asked all the time how it is the girls look happy in my shows. It's because I spend aaaages thinking about which outfit will suit them best. Sometimes I'll try a girl in seven, eight, nine looks before I hit the right one for her. People say, but Michael, they're models, they can wear anything. Wrong. There's one great model who has really short legs.' His voice, which shares the exuberant cadences of Alan Carr but with deeper, American inflections, dips conspiratorially. He won't reveal names. Suffice to say, she is the one he never puts in trousers. 'You can see when women - and that includes models, by the way - feel good in what they're wearing. Their posture changes. And so does their mood.'

Kors, for the record, is wearing white jeans, black T-shirt and jacket (the other way round, he once memorably opined, makes you look like a waiter), gold Rolex, flapjack-coloured tan and smoothly cherubic face. It must be a winning combo, since his mood is generally on the ebullient to ecstatic spectrum, even on a day like today, when he has just flown from a mini break with his husband, Lance ('I love mini breaks. Mini breaks save my sanity'), in Capri, where it poured with rain, to a full day of interviews with international press people who have jetted into Madrid to witness his newest store opening.

If you were to pick a spot on the globe where there was a desperate need for a fancy new Kors store, selling clothes that weave the disparate elements of the great American narrative - from Navajo and cowgirl to Babe Paley and Gatsby - into a sleek, wealthy uptown New Yorker-in-boom-times package, Madrid, a city with 25 per cent youth unemployment and demonstrations a go-go, would perhaps not be your first choice. But 10 days in, business is booming.

'Coats. They can't get enough coats,' Kors states. 'I said, "In May? It's 26 degrees." But they love the drama of a coat. And cocktail dresses. They must be doing a lot of parties here.'

Business is booming in general for Michael Kors.

The day before his autumn/winter show in New York last February, the share price of his recently floated company rose 27 per cent. His models were not the only ones beaming on the catwalk. Last year the company turned over $1.3 billion, a rise of more than 60 per cent on the previous year. It has been expanding exponentially since 2002, when it was recording about $30 million of sales a year. 'Isn't it crazy? In a decade of financial catastrophe, from 9/11 and Sars to the banking collapse, things have only gone upward.'

It is particularly crazy considering that in 1990 his business was in Chapter 11, the US equivalent of going into administration. 'With hindsight, I can see that I was pretty parochial. I sold a bit in Canada and London and I thought with that, and all the omen I knew in New York and LA, I could have a comfortable business.' Given that the kind of women who were attracted to his glossy, refined version of American sportswear were impeccably dressed, high-spending socialites such as Nan Kempner, or supermodels like Elle Macpherson, he could be forgiven for having wanted to keep things cosy. 'In those days I got everything made around the corner from my office in the Garment District,' he says.

Being hired by LVMH to overhaul the Céline label in the mid-1990s was the wake-up call he needed. 'Suddenly I had to confront the possibility that not everyone in the world wanted to wear camel and grey flannel in November; that the way a woman in Sydney dresses for work might not be the same as a woman in New York. Women travel and there's a degree of conformity, but still, what works in London in the damp doesn't necessarily do it for the Singaporeans.'

By 2002 he was also a judge on Project Runway, a television reality show now in its 10th year. Kors's biting but not bitchy wit and his status within the fashion industry gave it a credibility and glamour the British version lacked. It in turn made him a household name. 'We've been on longer than The Lucy Show. Isn't that insane?'

With the right mental attitude, a proven product and mounting fame, all Kors needed for global domination was some deep-pocketed backers. Silas Chou and Lawrence Stroll had had spectacular success at Tommy Hilfiger, and equally spectacular disaster at Asprey.

In 2003 they bought 51 per cent of the business; Kors retained 12 per cent. The combination was perfect: an era hungry for slick, well-made clothes that looked expensive without being vulgar, a business duo that knew how to take a brand to new markets and a designer who knew not only how to design but also how to sell.

Boy, did Kors know how to sell. At the age of 11 he opened a shop in his parents' basement in Long Island, New York, selling tie-dye bags and batik clothes he had made. At 16 he had a nice business selling his sketches to a jeans line. A boy with expensive tastes, he blew all the profits on a Cartier Tank watch. But more even than the shop, it was his contribution to his mother Joan's second wedding dress, when he was five, that suggested any career other than one where he would devote himself to making women feel better about their appearance was out of the question.

A former model, Joan had eloped for her first wedding and wanted to make things right with her mother second time around. 'Hence the horrendous dress,' Kors says. 'Because actually my mom had great taste.' It's not strictly true that her son designed the outfit, but he definitely redesigned it.

'What happened was that she came into the room in this thing absolutely smothered in bows and my grandmother's saying beautiful, beautiful, and there's me, aged five, practically gagging in the corner.' It's amazing one so young should have such resolute minimalist vision. Even more amazing to come across a mother who would listen. The bows were removed, 'all 750 of them'. And yes, the result was much improved. In fact, it did better than the short-lived marriage (to Bill Kors, from whom Michael, born Karl Anderson, took his last name; he had already decided at the age of five that he preferred Michael to Karl).

By the time he was 17 he was working for Lothar's, an upmarket boutique on 57th Street in Manhattan, where Dawn Mello spotted him in the window, halfway up a ladder. A former child model who had been in ads for cereal and loo paper, Kors, with his halo of blond curls, now somewhat depleted, must have been an arresting sight. But it was his clothes that grabbed Mello. A woman of peerless taste, who was then working at Bergdorf Goodman and later went to Gucci, where she hired a young Tom Ford, Mello was struck by the display Kors had been working on, and even more so when he revealed that he was also the designer, merchandise director, manager, sales assistant and chief coffee maker. Mello invited him to show his collection to the buying team at Bergdorf, then - and now - America's most prestigious department store. He agreed, even though he did not actually have a complete collection, and the next day he and his mother turned up to present and model the clothes.

Kors still loves selling, even if the trunk show, the personal-appearance-cum-shopping-event at which he excelled, is no longer as common as it was in the 1980s and 90s when it launched many an American designer's career, though none quite as successfully as his. 'Twitter's the new trunk show,' he observes. 'I get women posting pictures of themselves all the time and asking me what I think.' Or he will get a client soliciting his advice on the phone from the changing-room of another designer. He loves selling so much, he will even encourage her to spend on another brand. 'When I was in my teens and twenties I was a mad, crazy shopper. I understand that rush. I know what the rustle of tissue paper does to the pulse. I get the promise of transformation. I know,' he adds, looking wistfully at his black-clad stomach, 'what it's like to want to look thinner.'

He is constantly telling customers not to be so hard on themselves. 'I had one woman trying on a swimsuit that Carmen [Kass] had worn in the show, feeling miserable because it didn't look the same. I said, first of all, you have three kids, second, you haven't been spray-tanned to within an inch of your life, and thirdly, excuse me for noticing, but you're north of 40, not a supermodel who's been playing soccer since she was six.'

He is learning, too, how to make life more pleasant for himself in this post-designer-meltdown era, hence the mini-breaks and the house he shares with Lance on Water Island, a tiny speck off Long Island where there are no cars or even bikes. 'I look back to the early 1990s when I thought I was busy and wonder what I did with myself. I suppose I had time to daydream. Now no one does that. Even tiny kids are scheduled. I'm so glad I'm not a designer starting out now. I've had 30 years to build the stamina.'

When he launched in 1981, he had one line and three collections a year. Now there are three lines: Michael Kors Collection, MICHAEL by Michael Kors and Kors by Michael Kors, for which prices are surprisingly reasonable. 'That's because while the shoes are all Italian-made for the main collection, the second lines are a mixture of Italian materials and Far East manufacturing.' He thinks even his wealthiest clients are grateful for the cost consideration. 'They're in shock at some of the prices. I mean, let's be honest, designer clothes have always been expensive. Those women like Babe Paley were not dressing impeccably on the cheap. But in the boom era things got so noisy that you had to keep ramping up your design. Then came the internet and people felt the only way a shoe could be noticed was if you designed it in turquoise alligator with a pink sequinned bow, a heel made from vermicelli and a platform that was an aquarium. And guess what, that's a shoe that costs £2,000.'

Kors's own bestselling shoe, it should be noted, is the Berkley T Strap, which costs £110 and has sold more than 500,000 so far. 'We couldn't work out why. I mean it's a good shoe. You can walk in it, and by the way, the shoe you can't walk in, the dress you can't sit down in, the bag that's so heavy you can't put more than a lipstick in it - that's all over. But still, we were mystified. Then we discovered that it's the bat mitzvah shoe. Every 13-year-old girl in New York and LA had it.'

The real trick today, he thinks, is to design clothes that are sexy but not vulgar, youthful but not ridiculous, simple but exciting… He chuckles ruefully at the impossible paradoxes before perking up, because really, it all comes back to empathy.

'You know what? If women didn't demand all those things, my job would be boring.'

KORS LAWS

• The difference between chic, style and elegance is that elegance has nothing to do with clothes. It's about the way you move, how you gesticulate or use your hands. Chic is style but with a wink. It's that quality that makes you look at a person and think, I wish I'd thought of that.
• If ever a customer in the public eye tells me she is worried about wearing an expensive dress more than once, I tell her to stop fretting. Nan Kempner used to wear her clothes over and over. It's a sign you actually own rather than borrowed them. That's chic. Same with jewellery. Oprah and Barbra Streisand - they're about the only women in Hollywood who actually own their jewellery.
• I will forever love classics, but you need to recalibrate them. For instance, a trench coat has to be a bit small or too big. The right size looks too Madame. Something that looks as though it belongs to your husband is more youthful. And try replacing the soft tie belt with a leather one. We've all done that Ingrid Bergman look.
• A Little Black Dress. Can't fail - except if you put it next to a Little White Dress or a Little Metallic Dress. It's kinder on the skin, too.
• Women always seem to want to know what it is that Kate Moss does. But it's because she never looks completely perfect. It's not too done. She always mixes something familiar with the unfamiliar. That's what keeps it interesting without looking ridiculous.
• Get things altered. It makes all the difference. Even if it's high street. Especially if it's high street.
• True luxury today isn't in bling. It's in small everyday things. It's a bowl of perfect strawberries or a cashmere sweater, beautifully made, that you use every day. That old business of saving things for best is over. Luxury that sits on a shelf isn't luxury.
• When is too old for leather skinny trousers? Nan Kempner wore them in her 70s. Our bestselling dress this winter is leather and lace. It has no obvious practicality other than it makes women feel good and it works in just about every situation. It's about the body and the attitude. If you're worrying about your underwear, don't do it.
• Appropriate is an undervalued quality today but I think it's coming back and maybe Kate Middleton's had a lot to do with it. She makes appropriate youthful - and you'll notice she never resorts to a pastel skirt suit.
• As a rule, I don't ever say never. But jeggings are the exception. You mean your skinny jeans aren't skinny enough?
• Don't get hung up on height. I have a Japanese assistant who's 4ft 11in. She hardly ever wears heels but she looks great. And she wears long. You can break the rules if you're confident. It's a myth that heels are the only way forward for a shorter woman. Really high heels can look completely out of proportion - and proportions are much more important than dimensions. If you have short legs, you need to give the illusion of a raised waist.
• Always add one unexpected item to your look. Elle Macpherson wears flat sandals and surfer bracelets with her red-carpet dresses. She's not really a ball dress woman, but when she wears them her way she looks terrific. It's about being true to who you are and learning to express yourself through what you wear.

The Last Word: Felicity Jones

Have you met Miss Jones? Of course you have. Felicity Jones first shot into public consciousness in 2000 as the feisty teen Emma Carter in The Archers , a role she held for nine years on the Radio 4 soap opera. But that face deserved to be seen, and after racking up Doctor Who and The Diary of Anne Frank on her TV CV, Jones's big-screen break came last year in the indie smash Like Crazy .

Her doe-eyed, pouty good looks haven't gone unnoticed, either. Burberry tapped her for its winter campaign last year, and Dolce & Gabbana has made her the new face of its Khol and Bouquet make-up collections. Jones, 28, who read English at Oxford, will next be seen in The Invisible Woman , the story of Ellen 'Nelly' Ternan, Charles Dickens's secret mistress.

I don't have much time for shopping so pick things up when I can. My favourite labels are APC, Isabel Marant and Agnès B because the clothes are cut small and have a simplicity to them.

I felt most beautiful on the red carpet in Proenza Schouler's mint-green dress (below) at the Gotham Independent Film Awards last November. I loved the colour and the style - dressy but still casual.

The shirt's my favourite item. You can pair them with so many things. I have a great plain blue shirt from APC, and a denim one from Dolce that I wear constantly. It's hard to find the perfect denim shirt, but this is it.

My most treasured item is the brown leather bag that my mum bought me from a little Italian shop for my 21st. It's supposed to be a vanity bag, but I use it as a handbag.

The most extravagant thing I bought last year was a navy-blue Miu Miu suit (pictured). It's quite 1960s: a short jacket with a T collar, and a short flared skirt.

I buy Wolford tights. They feel luxurious, fit so well and are really comfy. I think a dark opaque tight looks great in winter with a short skirt and a fitted shirt or jumper.

For autumn I'd love one of Miu Miu's little satchel bags (pictured) - they do them in all these lovely pastels.

I would describe my look as 'ladylike rock chick'.

If I could raid anyone's closet it would be that of Patti Smith or the French actress Anna Karina. I love Smith's androgynous style, and both women look fantastic in a slightly structured blazer.

I saw Philadelphia Story again recently, and I love Katharine Hepburn's character in that. She's a great comic actress with excellent timing.

My favourite portrait of myself is the shoot I did for Italian Vogue with Tom Munro. The look was different from my own - it was sort of ladylike, but with a bit of S&M thrown in. It was styled by Madonna's stylist [Arianne Phillips], so that was pretty cool.

Wales is great for long walks and getting away from it all. I went to Seville recently. The culture there is fascinating and it has so much amazing architecture.

Whenever I go away I always take something to make it feel homely, such as a scented candle from Diptyque or a small cushion that I bought in Marrakesh.

My boyfriend and I live in east London. The flat is a little sparse because I haven't been home very much. I'm trying to build up a collection of things I like, but at the moment there are just books everywhere. I'm reading Steve Jobs's biography, and The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje.

I once shared a flat with a Maltese girl who taught me to make great meals with rice, fish and vegetables. I love cooking, especially Italian food, but I don't have the time to experiment much.

I've just watched Into the Abyss a documentary about capital punishment in the US, and there's a line in it where one of the people interviewed says, 'How are you going to live your dash?' The interviewer says, 'What do you mean by dash?' And the reply is, 'The line between your birth date and your death date on your gravestone.' That's such an incredible way of looking at life - how you're going to live your dash. I think part of truly living is to take opportunities as they arise and grab every moment as it pops up.

Kate Middletons Topless Photos Surface in Closer Magazine

During a recent sunbathing session in the South of France, Kate Middleton opted to forego tan lines and ditched her bikini top. And now the French magazine Closer has published photos from the incident.

According to a report, the pictures feature the Duchess of Cambridge lying out in the sun sans top while her husband Prince William rubs tanning lotion on her back.

A caption from the magazine reads, "The last time we saw Kate and William on a balcony it was for their wedding. But they had more clothes on… People always say she doesn't need to dress up to look good. Well… Kate is proving this."

In response to the invasive photos being published, a St. James Palace official declared, "Their Royal Highnesses had every expectation of privacy in the remote house. It is unthinkable that anyone should take such photographs, let alone publish them."

"The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the Duke and Duchess for being so."
